MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 5:28 PMScott does admit there is one movie where he felt he had snipped too much, before revealing how long "Prometheus" will run in theaters. "I've only made a mistake once on cutting a film short -- I won't say what it is right now, because this is not the time -- but I removed 17 minutes off a movie, and I didn't ruin it, but it wasn't [as effective]," Scott said. "In this instance, you got a pretty good version here, pretty good cut. We're running at about -- I think without the end titles, which normally run about four to five minutes -- we're running one hour, fifty-nine minutes and change. It's very tight, it's what it should be."

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 5:52 PMExactly. The movie you see in the theatre IS the director's cut. That's the way he/she intended it. Now you can go off and say there is a compromise between what the director wanted and what the studio wanted... true... but the director knows who is paying for his bread and butter and will cut the movie to meet that compromise....both in time and in rating...it's the way the industry works...
Do you want to see funding for a Prometheus 2? There you go...
I remember seeing 'Ghandi' in the theatre. There was an intermission at about the 2 hour mark...then after the biological break you went back in for about another hour and a half. The intensity of the movie had paled in your mind when you walked back into the darkness... not an option you want when dealing with Prometheus...IMHO
But...let us guess what movie Sir Ridley cut 17 minutes from...
Here are your choices...
The Duellists (1977),
Alien (1979),
Blade Runner (1982),
Legend (1985),
Black Rain (1989),
Thelma & Louise (1991),
Gladiator (2000), *
Hannibal (2001),
Black Hawk Down (2001),
Kingdom of Heaven (2005),
American Gangster (2007),
Robin Hood (2010).
* = My choice

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 6:01 PMHe's probably talking abut Blade Runner. The studio demanded he cut that short and he later went back and added a lot of stuff back in so it would be truer to his original vision. It's the film he's tinkered with the most and has resulted in a cut that is drastically different from what was oiginally shown in theatres.
He could also be talking about Kingdom of heaven, that was drastically cut for theatre release, the directors cut was almost an hour longer and a better film for it.
I seem to also remember a longer cut of gladiator but I seem to remember him being pretty happy with the original cut.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 6:06 PMWell, it is good to see he is basically repeating the same comments everywhere lately, which are basically that....
The upcoming 119 minute theatrical release of Prometheus is THE CUT he APPROVES, and thinks is the BEST for this movie.
END OF STORY.
PS: Yes, I think the movie in question is Gladiator.. and the specific scenes in question are mainly at the beginning which shows much more detail on Maximus' dash home to try to save his family, and more detail in the first Gladiatorial battle he has in the Colliseum.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 6:16 PMWe should be cautious about the term
Director's cut because they can have
The following cause:
1. The original release was made against
The personal wish of the director because
the director's cut was too long in the taste
Of the studio
2. The director changes his opinion over the
Years and releases his version with unused
Materials.
3. The studio just wants to make more
Money and re-releases the movie as a
Director's cut / special edition.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 6:21 PMthe extended scenes are the after battle hospital scenes and a scene where commodus bashes his fathers statue with a sword and also a scene where he executes his guards by arrows for allowing maximus to escape execution.
also some extended dialogue between senator Gracchus and Lucilla.
and extra footage of olly reeds character.

MemberOvomorphApr-15-2012 6:29 PMI would say it was ... Kingdom of Heaven, Alien or Legend ... simply because they were FOX funded movies ... and so couldn't talk about them ... my guess anyhow ...
Also according to IMDB Alien Director's Cut was 117mins anyhow ...
