Shaw sees the funny side!

I wonder if at any time towards the end of the film Shaw says to Holloway "Don't you think this situation we are in is reminicent to the ancient greek legend of Prometheus when something was stolen from the gods and were subsequently harshly punished?" Holloway retorts "..and the ship we came in is called...." Both together "Ahhhh!....PROMETHEUS!!!, oh the irony, we should have seen that coming" both nod agreeingly and laugh, roll credits!! I wonder if the Nostromo or Sulaco had been called the USS Inevitable Death Ahead; things would have been different?!!

The only reason the name of the ship being Prometheus hasn't bothered me, and I agree with all your collective reservations on this, is that it plays into Weyland's hubris....the man is so obviously convinced of his own greatness, that either he sees himself and his company stealing that 'fire' from the 'gods' they're traveling to meet or the use of that name is a simple in-story nod to the obvious alien astronaut corralation...they handed down fire to mankind, as Weyland considers in his TED Talk, about how harnessing fire was literally man's first technological advancement....why not not name your expedition vessel after the source of the mythical Prometheus who may have given your species that 'fire' to begin with?

Well, you're all getting to the heart of it, which is unfortunately, that Hollywood has convinced RS that things have to be 'spelled out' for audiences, so they feel smart, like they're discovering a secret. It's the same thing that happens when David uses the word 'unethical' in the viral video. It was really unnecessary. No one would use that word in a piece of corporate advertising. Plus, we would all have known what he meant if he had said 'objectionable.' wink wink. They didn't have to hit us over the head with the deeper meaning.

It does seem a tad predictable that the whole premise of the film is based on the greek legend of Prometheus and acts as a metaphor for the events of the film, (ie. dont feck with the creators) as much as it is a good story. Having the ship called prometheus also though just makes me sigh in disappointment though, is it simply Ridley Scott's idea of irony?

Ive never really looked at it that way but if Shaw and Holloway are these amazing archeologists then they really should have seen the Prometheus name as a bit of a worry. If i was getting on a ship to travel to a distant star system to meet a race of presumably advanced Aliens and the ship was called Prometheus i would be thinking "now wait a minute Prometheus stole from the gods, im not ok with stealing anything let alone Alien tech it might go down badly with the advanced E.T.s.....im staying here thanks, didn't he have his innards ripped out over and over for all eternity too, sod that your all being very stupid "
