The Doom 3 (game) storyline: In the future, the remains (ruins) of an ancient civilization are found on a distant planet that point to the origins of mankind. There was an invasion / infection that destroyed the civilization. The ruins of the locations are covered with glyphs that tell of a war between that civilization (our ancestors) and an evil and warn of it happening again. Additionally, within the ruins are star maps indicating specific locations of planets and events across the universe. There are also large collections of conopic-jar type cylinders found as well. The civilization also has teleportation technology.

Well now, that's disheartening:O( Of course, a writer that comes from the "Lost" generation would probably try to pass off a video game as original art to an old school chap like RS. In all fairness though, none of these themes are unique to anyone....they have evolved over decades of SciFi canon. It's all in the execution and maybe, just maybe, RS does have some surprises for us afterall?

I agree more with Dave_b. We have all seen these and similar archetypes in science fiction media- from 'Halo' to 'Aliens,' to Ancient Aliens on the History Channel. These ideas are a type of pseudo-fiction, or canon, that has evolved with the genre as a whole the past 20 years or so. What us true sci-fi fans want, I think; WHAT I WANT, is a more updated and timely packaging of all of these story elements, re-tooled and presented for the next generation to ponder.

And our characters don't have to put on tights or capes to be note worthy already, not that there is anything wrong with that I plan to be there May 4 if get my meaning.

Yes indeed Spartacus, but how many years ago was that? Hum! You see what I mean. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that at least Prometheus will probably come out on a level similar to Aliens and hopefully at most it will surpass it's predecessor Alien. But with so many other good movies coming out who knows. Avengers will assemble, the Dark Knight will rise, and Prometheus will land... I just had to say it.

The only part of Doom 3 that reminds me of Prometheus is this scene (ain't no star map, but style is eerily similar):

Totally in agreement with Spartacus here Minority Report was one of the best sci-fi films in recent years... when someone tries to make a film of a class A writers book only the best and those that stick to the genus of the idea are any good. Minority Report was penned by Phillip K. Dick who also wrote the book Do Androids dream of Electric sheep and approved most of Scott's work on Bladerunner (but died before he saw the film. He also brought us We'll Remember for you wholesale (Total Recall)and A scanner Darkly, although I can never see The three stigmata of Palmer Eldritch being turned into a film (I thought the same about The Lord of the Rings books). My point is Good Science Fiction (especially Writers before popular culture and the money machine) were always about reflecting and/or challenging cultural and social ideas and the best of these films stay true to that. Not the pop culture-make as much money as possible as quickly as possible T and A CGI run films that disappear and make no real memory. Games are fun (I like to play, don't get me wrong), they are often entertaining and addictive from a story point of view, but have little if anything to add to the greater questions and no answers as I see. Films and games are just entertainment in the end. "Nothing new can be done that hasn't been done before" Most things have all been done looooong before!

When you abstract fiction, most of the plots will sounds alike. For example. In the future, there is a space station where there is a council, where humans are not the most powerful people around, and it high tech, but while not gritty, things like poverty and violence have not been solved. Then massive war breaks out with a threat that has been dormant for thousands of years. Basic plot of Babylon five, AND Mass Effect. or Boy meets girl, Girl and boy like each other, boy and girl can't date each other, boy and girl date each other. Hilarity ensues. Most romantic comedies. Or you can have a drama and have Drama Ensues, which is as least old as Romeo and Juliet.

Hmm, I'm waiting for a mashup...Romeo and Juliet and Aliens. "O! she doth teach the torches to burn bright" - when Ripley torches the queen's eggs "For you and I are past our dancing days" - "Get away from her, you bitch!" "Good Night, Good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow, that I shall say good night till it be morrow." - "Game over, man. Game over!"
Fall down seven times, get up eight.

Xenophobia, I think your reading me wrong....I am most definately having a nerdgasm over this film! I was just referencing all the pseudo-science on the History channel for example which claims we are/have been visited by aliens. In other words, I hope RS really nails this topic home for me and makes me go...MAYBE THEY ARE RIGHT!
Yes indeed Spartacus, but how many years ago was that? Hum! You see what I mean. I just had to say it.
I do not think this film is just a good film right now, I think it is a Great film, and maybe a MasterPiece Waiting to Happen for all we know, and when all is said and done, Ridley Scott will be a LOCK IN for Best Director and will Prometheus will be the one film that knocks down a Hollywood created Science Fiction Barrier...a Massive Wall...that has been in place for years and years and years ...smashing it down and earning Prometheus the Honor No Other film Science Fiction Film in history has ever been able to nab, the Best Picture Oscar. ------------ n 1968, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey started a trend that eventually brought science fiction films from low-budget “B-movie” ratings to the big-budget status we now take for granted. As presented by Hollywood (and on television), science fiction today reaches far beyond mere respectability to real cultural and marketplace power. Its characters, settings, jargon, and fictional science have become recognized parts of popular culture the world over. Science fiction wields enormous commercial clout, too. Although James Cameron’s Avatar stands out as the highest grossing film ever at $2.6 billion, it’s not alone. At last count, 19 of the 50 all time top-grossing films – nearly 40% – are science fiction in one form or another. For all this success, though, no science fiction film has yet made it onto Hollywood’s true A-list; that is, none has won an Oscar for Best Picture, or Directing, or both. A few films touching on science or scientists have been nominated and even won at this level; Dr. Strangelove, for example, was put up for Best Picture in 1965, and A Beautiful Mind, about mathematician John Nash, won Best Picture in 2001. But although straight science fiction films such as 2001, A Clockwork Orange, the original Star Wars, Close Encounters, and E.T. have been nominated for Best Picture or Directing, all they won were less significant awards such as Visual Effects.

I guess we would find out... But then so so many Sci Fi movies and Horrors are far from Orginal, they all are based losely on others. Independance Day, Battle Los Angles and so many more are all simular to War of the Worlds. Some of this movie could be simular to Doom 3 plot but that does not mean its the same in every detail. You will be hard pressed to find Sci Fi movies that are not related to early movies. There are a few Orginal concepts... and i agree that the Alien Xeno was quite Orginal but i supose you could losely related it to invasion of the body snatchers. The Thing was kinda Orginal idea, but again you could see some links again to invasion of the body snatchers.
