Sorry to be BLUNT. What I have noticed lately is some people with "ZERO" lives who are totally over thinking this film. Yes this will be a great film do to the subject, actors, director, and everything else. But come on it's two hours roughly of a great escape from the world outside the theater. All I can say is lets keep the subject on the movie and not some ideas that have zero to do about the Alien concept.
But I have a few questions:
What year is this suppose to take place?
What year did the Alien #1 take place?
Why are the robots in alphabetical order
Ash, Bishop, Call, and now David?
Now shouldn't David be named something different since he came before "Ash"?
So basically this movie is the real story that will lead up to the Alien #1 movie? Or could this movie be a possible part 1 of a series?

Hey Scared-
No doubt there are people WITH lives who are over thinking this film as well. But I must admit that having two jobs (plus) is a nice distraction from the exquisite pain of the anticipation of all the great films to be seen this summer.
2012 is going to be a golden year for folks with interests and tastes in movies similar to mine!

@scaredshitless:
Well, cinematography meant a lot more to the old folks...I am one of them...Movies were scarce and people did not have the experiences we all have today. Being bombarded by technology each day, to the extent that whatever we show in the most futuristic movie would haven never impressed us.
If you show Avatar, and spotted some scientists removing data from a translucent monitor to an other translucent PDA, that wouldn't strike you that much today, because you have the i-Pad...more or less the same miraculous.
But back then...oh boy back then....even to conceive a plot like the Alien, was incredible...unique..And in a sense the idea still is today. And with great movies ,being so little those days, then films like Alien could really have an important impact on your personality. Adding to this, we were all so young when we saw it...I was 12!
All the above said to excuse the passion for which all this old fans in here talk and write about Prometheus...
Now to your questions...I am not sure...someone else will be more accurate...what I know...
Prometheus is a prequel around lets say 2120...Alien (1979) is around 20-30 years later. This story is supposed to be a prequel to 1979 Alien...But Sir Ridley Scott has officially spoken his mind about going for a Prometheus 2...now you get the picture..As about androids...that's a great observation you made there...but maybe it's just coincidental...never crossed my mind...
Be well my friend...

Hey...@scaredshitless......rather than belittle what other people are passionate about, why not converse with us like a human being or is that too complicated and difficult for you?
Ever hear of 'To each his own'?

To answer the discussion question title bluntly: Yes. This is a movie. And it's not even out yet. So, we're probably over-SPECULATING if not over-thinking it.
However, to echo craigamore and others. You have NO IDEA what my life is like or even WHY I am here engaging in speculating with other people. So, I find it offensive that your value judgement—which is completely lacking in terms of being informed—appears in the framing of your topic’s introduction.
The “backstory” of the Engineers touches quite directly on possibly one of the biggest questions in the modern philosophical zeitgeist (of those who have the standard of living and leisure time as a function of their individual lives to engage in such pursuits at all)—A Collective Human Existential Crisis of sorts. That is likely in any educated circle to generate a lot more “thinking” than The Clone Wars, for example. The film is a catalyst for (civilized) discussion. Nothing more than that, and entertainment.

a little escapism don't hurt none! or would you rather talk about the sh** hole this F'up world is, just look around if you are not convinced. Any who, offending others on this forum is not gonna win you any friends but if you are into that sort of thing than don't post here.

@scaredshitless
I think that the "whole idea" of a site/forum like this one, is that you can share your thoughts and ideas, and also the "whole idea" is that "no matter if you share an idea or read some idea", everybody has to respect any opinion... and of course to be focus that the real objective is to have fun and excited about the film. So, cheers mate! Thanks for that.
And by the way, I'm sure that the objective of the production and mkt team is exactly to generate this kind of excitement and buzz.

Yes. We are overthinking it completely. The plot will be nowhere near as complicated as people on this site have been imagining it. It will be significantly less deep or subtle than Blade Runner. The reason for this is that Ridley is creating a film for mass consumption and will not risk having a plot that Joe Sixpack can't easily digest.
Not saying it's going to be a stupid or bad movie, just saying it will be very, very simple in comparison to the byzantine plot devices that are hatching here.
"Dem blue guys are the bad guys, ain't they? I hope the good guys kill em."

if you have read enough to think people are being over speculative then you should have read enough to know the answers to most of your questions

"Bummer, I have plenty of friends who respect that we can talk the truth to eachother. Because were men!!"
We can speak the truth here @scaredshitless, but the point is, we all, for the most part don't go out of our way to generally insult the entire population of a forum community.......The point of this site is to have a place for passionate fans to converse, talk about something their very excited about and have fun...
..and by the way @scaredshitless....REAL men know, comprehend and use respect when dealing with other human beings........read between the lines....especially considering the fact that you have to lay it out for everyone...
