My 3D Conversion

Now, I know we've had a number of threads concerning the 2D vs. 3D argument....so if any fellow staff feels this is a duplicate, feel free to do as you will....but let me argue for what is as strange and sudden a turn around in opinion as I've had..... I always argue my points vigorously and some have seen it to suggest that I am too subjective in this regard.......the following is as much a surprise to me as any of them.... In previous 2D vs. 3D arguments, I have firmly stated a disgust for what I considered a gimmick in 3D...had said that I would see 'Prometheus' in all screen versions, (2D, 3D, and IMAX), but was firm in my preference to see the film in 2D first.... This weekend I set forth to remedy a situation...until friday night I had not managed to see a 'Prometheus' trailer on the big screen and it was, frankly, driving me absolutely, positively, posilutely nuts...I'd tried with the teaser in December with 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' and was snubbed.....Friday, I chose to see 'Wrath of the Titans' in 3D, despite that I didn't really care to see it, just because I KNEW, for some reason, that I'd see the trailer I wished to see and in 3D.......today, Sunday, I felt like going to the movies again....regrettably, I chose to see 'Lockout'...but anyhoo, I saw that same trailer in 2D. And I have to say.....the difference was STAGGERING......I never thought I'd find myself advocating to see this film in 3D.....I mean, the 3D experience was entirely energetic, emersive and enthralling...the 2D, pathetically underwhelming...I'm still in shock at the difference and I hate 3D.....HATE it....so what know?....I believe I have to rethink my approach and give this a chance in 3D first, because, frankly, one experienced moved me, despite having seen the trailer countless times already, in a way that only truly brilliant films have....the other, and I'm terribly sad to say it was the 2D, did not.....beyond all that, I have nothing else to say, but that I am now eating my words with Worcestershire sauce, some Fava beans and a nice Chianti.....leuvf leuvf leuvf leuvf leuvf :)

Agree......should see it in 3D, I mean I watched "phantom menace" with my kid and really enjoyed it ( well it was actually 4D or real 3d whatever you wanna call it ); however the image resolution is really neat and though it was not intended for 3D, just imagine how this is going to look like.

Here, let me serve you another slice of humble pie. It only should've taken Avatar, but better late than never.

Ahh but Quinntas....'Avatar' did nothing for me....in regards to 3D or otherwise....especially considering the total plot rip from 'Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest" that I realized before I even made it to my car....

3D is a gimmick, but I disagree with craigamore in that the 3D was a huge part of Avatar, yes the story was crap, but some of the first shots where the massive tractor was in the distance, it felt like I was looking at a Window not a film screen. It was a far more immerseive experience, 3D conversion sucks balls though, its a gimmick and is always done terribly just to make more money. Prometheus will be one of the first movies to use it to add depth not only to add a few $ to your ticket price.

If the film has been written, planned & directed in 3D then it works. What annoys and disappoints me is when a film has been converted to 3D by a bunch of very talented yet very underpaid IT guys in a sweat shop Lab in India somewhere. The first Clash of the Titans was filmed in 2D and then converted in less than a month. Biggest rip off disappointment was taking my son to watch John Carter in 3D. Yes I know the film wasn't any good in 2D or 3D. But the 3D was absolutely crap to watch. It ruined an already poor movie and my son fell asleep after 45mins!!! Prometheus however has been filmed & directed in & for 3D......this (I hope) will make all the difference and add to the experience

@craigamore how was the 3D? I mean did it add depth? Was it in your face? Because I tend to not go to 3D movies because they get me sick and I don't want to ruin my first experience of the movie :p

Logan3....It added depth, created a sense of size and scope the 2D just did not have.......and really, I must say, when things got crazy as it ramped up, that depth in certain shots created a new level of creepy that hadn't been there...it really did....

Sounds reaaly cool craigamore but maybe a stupid question but do you think I will get sick of the movie? I mean was it just an added effect or something you see in an amusement park? Cause those make me sick :p

Cameron thought up the idea recently of Doubling the frame rates and it worked and Ridley freaked. Says he'll never use any other type of cameras again on any film.
