Did they show us too much? (Shaw's

MemberOvomorphApril 30, 20122728 Views35 RepliesI just noticed in the new trailer released this weekend, in the scene where Shaw is in the medpod, the "squiddy-thing" has been fuzzed out. I wonder why they decided to do this after we've already gotten a pretty good glimpse of the thing? Anybody else notice that? If this has already been discussed, sorry - I searched but found nothing. I find this very interesting though...

Here's the non-fuzzed out one for comparison..

Heeeeeeeeeeeeey RickK, long time no see man. Didn't actually notice that they fuzzed it out to be honest, but the squids out of the gut as far as we're concerned. We still have yet to see what that thing grows up to be, and it's sure to be horrible. It already is as a little 'un, and they at Fox HAD to know we'd jump on detail like that. So, in answer to your question, I don't think they have let too much out personally. Depends on your point of view I guess. But so far I'm quite satisfied with what I've seen, and the hype gets hyp-ier :-D

Hey man! I'm just wondering why they changed their minds and decided they didn't want us to see it anymore? Seems like a strange move on their part. Just like "mutated guy's" has long gangly alien-like arms in one trailer and then he's got regular human arms in the next. Some wierd stuff going on, theyr'e seriously messing with our heads and loving every minute of it I'm sure.
abordoliApril 30, 2012
I agree with the TC. It would be interesting to see the two images side-by-side (this one and the non-fuzzed out version).

CypherApril 30, 2012
They did it with the long-armed guy too? Wow. Usually I'm pretty observant but I think this is straining even my Batman-like detective skills................ I did notice the changed look of the ship between the teaser and the full trailer though. The second one I think looks far betterer.
Maybe they left those details in for the likes of us?

Hey abordoli - I edited my initial post and included the non fuzzed version for comparison.
abordoliApril 30, 2012
@RickK,
Thank-you. Now, I'm totally convinced these trailers are being edited keep certain things from being too apparent. Also, their might have been censorship considerations given that youngsters might have been up. I know I would have been up.
JPApril 30, 2012
That still wouldn't explain the mutant arms being changed...very odd...perhaps they realize fans dissect and pick up on these clues more than they would have liked
RickK ....do you have a comparison of the mutant scene also...I think it would be very telling if they were trying to hide the extent of human mutation, size at least

RickKApril 30, 2012
Yea, here you go... 1st pic is an animated gif from a previous trailer...

And here's an image I capped from the new trailer, the guy's arms are very normal...

CypherApril 30, 2012
The thrower. And it definitely looks like a spacesuit in the second pic...... curious.................

RickKApril 30, 2012
The thrower, compare his right arm in the animation, and in the pic (you can see it a lot better in the new trailer but I don't have the resources here to make an animation) I hope the people making these trailers are enjoying themselves, they are really keeping us guessing - who knows what we'll wind up seeing on the screen! I guess in this day and age where information is so readily available, misinformation is their only defense.
seagravesApril 30, 2012
The funny thing is, the thrower in the .gif looks more like the blacked out helmet thing that stares the crew member down than Fifield. The second picture looks like fifield. I think there are going to be two monsters/infected/aliens in that scene. Fifield and whatever that all black helmet thing is we see in the new trailer.
abordoliApril 30, 2012
If I recall, there has been another "edited" image brought up here of the landscape where one has just sky in the far background and another has had a planet placed at the horizon in post-production.
Could it be that we are seeing "pre" and "post" production clips in the trailer mixed in with a bit of censorship since trailers themselves are often rated for certain audiences? I'm not saying we're not being fooled with, but there is a possibility that this is not intentional.

RickKApril 30, 2012
@ Seagraves: I agree there's probably going to be more than one mutated crewmember invovled in this scene but it's obvious that those two images are the exact same part of the scene and involving the same two people, In one, the thrower has been doctored up post production and in the newer one he one has not.
@abordoli: Hard to say, wierd thing is, the first time the "throwing guy" (for lack of a better term) made an appearance in the trailers he had normal arms, then in a later trailer he had the longer arms and more mutated appearance, and now he's got normal arms again. I don't think they did it unintentionaly, I'm sure everything you see in that trailer was heavily scrutinized before it was released.

SpartacusApril 30, 2012
in answer to your question I am just offering another view here...or a guess if you will...I am not sure how this thing came out of her body, but if i were guessing I would say an incision right near or around the chest...perhaps this shot in particular was made deliberately for different trailer needs...hard Core and regular if you will each being designed to test in different markets. But the angle of it seems a little different to me, In Other Words it is not the exacts same shot, close but a little different in the angling...this one might have shown too much of the reveal on how that thing is birthed...who knows, originally I thought they were completely different angle but they are NOT they are real close to each other and I could even be wrong and they are exactly the same but again, my guess would be, different needs for different market testings.
abordoliApril 30, 2012
It wouldn't be the first time that a movie has used footage more than once hoping that the audience wouldn't notice. Good point, Sparty!

CypherApril 30, 2012
It's starting to do my head in :-S but it's fun to guess anyways :-D

Well Ridley did not seem impressed by some of us fanboys. when he made a comment that we over analise too much.
I think maybe they never expected so much of us to be freeze framing and blowing up still images of the trailers.
Maybe in hindsight Fox decided to hide the details of that scene by blurring it out, only other reason would be for it to not be shown due to the time of day but after 9PM would go with a 15+ viewing and i cant see that image being to graphic for 9 PM Watershed?

BigDaveApril 30, 2012
Oh with regards to the Hanger scene who knows.
I dont think the mutated/edited clip shows enough to be effected by the Watershed?
Maybe again that scene shows far too much, as it could show what the crew mutate into.
But then a latter scene we see Fifield pull someone out of maybe a window, there also apears to be a axe or crowbar he is using, so i would say by that, that they decided to go for the mutated fifield look as opposed to the guy with long limps and big head who knows.
The bluring of Shaws scene does tell me that maybe yes this scene is the money shot scene Ridley is on about and maybe in hindsight they wish they never showed it clearly in other trailers.
But why hide these things as part of the plot, i understand Shaws part but the movie does show in detail
1) Dead Jockeys
2) What the worm looks like (Cobra) and who gets it.
3) The running Hologram Jockeys
So i feel this trailer showed more than the others, so i cant understand why they never included the big head/arm scene unless they decided for the movie to go with the orginal un edited/cgi overlay scene.

flacnvinylApril 30, 2012
@BigDave - I Think you nailed it. It was only shown during the peak flashing climax at the end of the trailer. They failed to anticipate us nerding out over it.

GalzuApril 30, 2012
Another confusing (misdirection?) scene is when we see Mohawk Man jumping off the top of that structure onto another crew member. In that scene he is heavily deformed but not in the way the original clip shows that Fifield is very elongated and almost twice his normal height. Its fair to say that scene is right before the "throwing" scene because you can see the same structure on the left. Im assuming in the movie we will see Fifield as a creature, not as "Mohawk Man".
spodokomodoApril 30, 2012
Concerning the throwing guy, assuming it's Fifield, we have that shot of him grabbing that guy and to me it looks like he's buried some kind of pick axe into his back, could it be that he's holding onto the axe as he's throwing the guy and not that he has a long arm? Doesn't explain why it's not there now but still.
I must admit I regret witnessing the squid baby, it must be the scene Ridley and Noomi refer to as being the contender to Kane's original birthing scene.
I have mentioned this in other posts, but has anyone noticed that you can make out a line of similar pyramids beyond the one they land in front of further down the valley at around 0:14 on the new trailer?
JPApril 30, 2012
@spodokomodo....either way you look at it, it's bloody daft putting it in the trailer if it's the the money shot
Back to the mutant, the take is or camera angle is slightly different, if you look at the still at the bottom the mutant stands to the left of 3 boxes in the background, diff to the gif above. So i think it may just be a lapse in post production. At least I hope it is, I want humans to grow to jockey sized freaks

MarcoBot1234April 30, 2012
Is this just another case of the trailer showing "all the good parts"
Like with most films u sit in the theater and realize you've already seen all the good scenes in the trailer...
Seems to be happening quite alot these days. Ridley seems to have control over all aspects when developing and directing film. He might not of had any say with what would be revealed int the trailers.
'Blacking' out the squid baby on the second trailer just seems like Fox's marketing team made a huge mistake by revealing something of great importance. Leading me to believe that the c-section scene will be in fact the 'money-shot' that Ridley has been hinting at in past interviews
:( dissapointed? Yea a little
JPApril 30, 2012
...but why even put it in the trailers in eth first place....just dont even draw attention to the fact that the scene even exists.
Youre right though...even if there is a ton of stuff that we havent seen yet, the fact that I know this scene exists, along with countless other 'teases' - will of course diminish the experience going in 'virgin'. You have to balance it up and whet the appetite of your prospective audience...but way too much being given away cheaply in my opinion

FamishedApril 30, 2012
It's a little disappointing that they would inadvertantly reveal too much. On the other hand, it IS an image that has contributed an enormous amount of speculation and interest. Definitely a marketing catch-22.
I'm loving that it is in the film, that this happens and they "go there", but also, it would be great if I could erase it from my memory.
I think, at this point, I'm now more disappointed in the cobra creature reveal. I would have loved to experience that in the film. And, of course, the most perplexing is the big spaceship crash. Would have been interesting to sit in on that editing meeting. Would love to hear Scott discuss such decisions on the DVD.
Even so, with all these reveals, you HAVE to know they are holding stuff back, and probably some amazing, shocking, and remarkable stuff. Perhaps they have so much confidence in that imagery, that they simply feel comfortable knowing they still have aces in their hand.

Biehn_BanditApril 30, 2012
Maybe the were still experimenting with different looks for that scene, Fifield mutant vs daddy long legs mutant. Looks like they went with Fifield, thinking it made more sense than a rapid transformation into daddy long legs during the scene.
With the filmmaking technology available today, they can keep on filming and editing closer to the release date.

RickKApril 30, 2012
I think the squid-birthing scene, or whatever you wanna call it, is not the BIG scene in the movie, but they really want us to think it is. They already had a lot of people convinced this is the big shock scene of the film, and now they are doing a "whoops-spilled the beans" move by blurring out the squid from that scene in the newest trailer trying to convince the rest of the non-believers that it really is the big scene and they messed up by showing it to us in the first place. Ridley and Fox are playing us like The Sims: Movie Nerds. I firmly believe this is a tactic to make us let our guard down after that scene plays out, then Ridley will hit us with the real shocker when we least expect it and the theaters that have brown seats will be glad they did.

Biehn_BanditApril 30, 2012
Two words: Tentacle violation. The filmmakers have been watching Wicked City and Urotsukidoji ! No wonder Scott says he's embarrassed.

Is this a bit OUT THERE??? ...
I was wondering about Shaw's 'closed set' scene ...
Would it be because they want to make the scene look as real as possible? ... what I mean is, to make it look totally real, would they goto the extreme of using proper hospital medical staff to produce the SFX? ... would you think they would literally INFLATE her stomach with air on purpose? ... because that don't 'arf look real ... I just thought the shock factor has gotta beat Kane's scene ... somehow ... because it doesn't 'have' to be gory to shock ya ...
Probably going too deep into it lol ...

RickKApril 30, 2012
It does make me wonder, if "the scene" was so super-duperdy secret and was filmed on a closed set - WHY PUT IT IN THE TRAILER????
beyondthebloodplainApril 30, 2012
In the hanger scene, I think we are confusing an axe for a forearm.
@RickK's first animated gif shows Mutant (Fitfield?) holding axe (stuck in victim's back).
His second gif shows no axe, but the rest of the thrower's body is in a position consistent with the first image. The axe has been "deleted".
In the MedPod scene, I suspect that the blurring of Squidley has less to do with "spoiler", and trying to put a cat back in the bag, and more to do with attempts to please censors.
Good eyes @RickK!

Just realized that I sound alot like @BigDave and @spodokomodo...
Good job guys!
spodokomodoMay 03, 2012
We just came to the same conclusion seperately dude, which means we must be right ;).
Has anyone else noticed the other pyramids during the landing scene at 0:14? I need to know I'm not seeing things.
spodokomodoMay 03, 2012
Scrub that, just read two threads concerning the other pyramids. I'm not seeing things then. Yay.
