Milburn the jackass

MemberOvomorphMay 04, 20122071 Views30 RepliesFirst, a couple of us briefly expressed dissapproval for Milburns decision making abilities in a former thread. I just thought it deserved its own topic. Milburns a jackass. Nothing about the way that cobra thing stands up and spreads out would make me think a good move would be to unzip my fly for it. I would have torched it the second it rose up and later called it self defense, or rang up David and let him stick his limbs out for it. I dont care if it looked like an ewok, anybody with interest in self preservation would back up to the nearest wall when something unknown pops up.
That scene (at least what we've seen of it) is very much an homage to the scene where Kane lets his curiosity steer him into stupidity. I mean jesus, what about those eggs, or the way the top peeled open, would make any logical person decide to stick there face over top of it. The whole time I watch it now I just sit there saying "dont do that, dont do that, why would you do that, get your face away from that thing".
Anyways, CarterJ noticed something on one of the other threads thats interesting. The cobra looks like it grabs Milburn on his right hand, but when we see it slipping into the suit, its going through the underside of a left forearm.

wonder if thats someone elses arm, some other snake, or the parasite strikes at Milburn harmlessly a few times (allowing him to dismiss any fear of it) until it finds an opening in the suit, and then all hell breaks loose.

What about that space hoodie? Looks like a giant condom.
I can see Ridley giving direction.." ok in this scene, you're a big dick"

He's one of those guys who thinks "what a cute little fella". Then he reaches out to touch it and "snap". Now it ain't so cute anymore... Idiot!

I think this shows is the same arm he grabs the cobra with.

I approve. Milburn is a jackass.
That doesn't look like a left forearm, really: that body would have to be in a very strange posture to make that a left arm - furthermore, it would be very peculiar in terms of continuity and an unlikely mistake.
It could be there is more than one worm - but I think that unlikely based on the evidence so far as, from what I recall of what we see, isn't the very end of this sequence, [which is not shown in this .gif ], showing a left hand coming over and clamping onto the right forearm in a, "too late", attempt to prevent the entry of the worm?

Shaw's_sweet_babyMay 04, 2012
Gameover man: don't think there would be an opening in a space suit... Seems a little risky in outer space.

OttoMay 04, 2012
he's right, that's definitely a left arm, turned with the palm Supine (facing up) . you can just make out the left thumb facing to the top of the screen (as the palm is up) as the critter goes into the suit..
So there's a lack of continuity, or this thing gets into a different person's suit...on the left arm.
Good find..

Dave_bMay 04, 2012
It's his right arm, why is that so hard to see? I think we have a few potential replacements here for the jackass!

allinambercladMay 04, 2012
@Otto
I truly don't understand how you can write that after you've see Big Dave's screengrab. I mean...it's clearly the same shot...
snapperMay 04, 2012
Im not so sure the two clips the cobra headed thing and the slimy thing going into a suit are related ?
if you look very closely the texture of the two alien things are very different !1 it may well be a master piece of misdirection !

Bahaha, it's written all over his face.

ah, BigDave's post shows that, while the arm the creature slips into may be difficult to decide on, whats clear is that its a left hand that grabs at the other arm after the snake gets inside...and if the left arm is there, the other must be the right. on its own, it certainly looks like a left hand facing upward, as Otto said.
@Engermann...yeah, that would be a design flaw.
anyway you slice it, the cobra tags at Milburns hand first, and we see it enter through the arm, so its not its first attempt to get at him that works.

Without a jackass, we wouldn't have a potential new life-form/creature. So I say, "Bravo Milburn!" :-)

Here's a shot of Vicker's elbow with the same suit. It's the right arm the whole time, you can tell by the shape of the elbows hinge, the two connecting (hexagons, pentagons?) have brass colored metal pieces that are raised higher then the third that's between the bottom two. See both pics.

I wonder if Ridley every saw Slither?
I didn't, so it'll all be new and fresh [ ;•) ] to me.
snugsMay 04, 2012
I hope that Snapper is right and that these scenes are a case of misdirection because I totally agree that noone with half a brain would put their hand anywhere near that thing. Surely anyone who is that stupid would not get past the selection process for any mission.

Alien DNAMay 04, 2012
Also Look at the black forearm section of the glove the contours and grooves match the right arm as well.

The more I listen to this clip (wether its one continuous scene, or different ones spliced together) it does scare the crap out of me knowing that some of the crew are just totally 'thick' and playing with something they don't really know anything about ...
HERE'S A SCENARIO:
You hear something sliver through the dark liquid ... you look at it curiously ... then it rises from the water ... it looks like an orchid ... you're curious ... you get a bit closer ... It flares up ... it resembles a Cobra (think SpaceCobra) ... it makes you jump ... it hisses ... you jerk back from being startled ... you regain confidence ... you think 'how cute' ... you start getting all cocky with it ... you're not thinking ... you goto grab it ... it's quicker than you, damn quick ... it grabs you back ... NOW you're thinking 'sh!t you're a strong little f*cker' (little being the operative word) ... you start to worry (because you didn't think this 'little' creature would do you any harm) ... oh, now you're sorry ... you want to get rid of it ... and quick ... pain starts to kick in ... it's constricting, it hurts like hell ... something snaps ... your arm is broken ... you start to scream & shout ... you're now sh!tting your pants ... what just happened? ... there's a loud crunching sound ... did it just sever your arm? ... SH!!!!!!!TTTTT!!! ... now you're cryin' ... WHAT THE F*CK IS THIS THING!!!? ... FEAR has kicked in, right on top of the Adrenalin rush ... you don't feel right ... you'd do ANYTHING to get it off ... it's not happening!!! ... the rush is so intense you're mind is all over the place ... you are a complete mess ... then, without warning ... your whole life starts to flash before your eyes ........................... just before you die ...
F*CK ME! ... I don't scare that easily ... but that is messing with me bigtime ... probably because that sound clip sounds so real ...
This is some scary sh!t ... damn this movie is gonna kick us in the b*ll*x ...

I have the exact same feelings as you, when I listen to that clip. The panic build up - the change from wonder, to fear, to agony and the sound of excruciating pain, screaming and crushing bones. It almost sounds like something from a wildlife documentary gone wrong.
I was in awe of the visual style and atmosphere of this movie, but this sound clip made me realize that Ridley Scott wants to scare the s... out of me, and by the sound of it (literally), he will!!

CyberdeathMay 04, 2012
I think that the editing in a trailer is almost never chronologicaly the same as the movie. The scene with the tentacle writhing up the arm might be a different part of the movie entirely or even played in reverse, then edited together for a visually stunning moment of action in the trailer alone.
BACK TO ORIGINAL TOPIC: the idea behind this thread specifically though could be boiled down to how would you react to an alien life form? what if fear and mistrust is the wrong answer? you don't really know, no matter what since it's the first time. Plus these are scientist with the find of a lifetime, wouldn't you think milburn be nerdy enough to think it's cool to be the first to touch it?

2 pretty obvious things I'll add based on the alien universe:
1. Yes, he's a dumbass. There are pages of science and species interaction protocol to read, initial, and sign off on before you ever become a member of an expedition like this one. Training up the kazoo... After all they're not a bunch of misinformed jarheads sent there to investigate.
2. If cutey-pie-snakey-poo is truly a pre-facehugger, it'll latch on, leak acid, and slip inside that spacesuit all in a fraction of a second. (And I seriously doubt that's the final edit. It's a he'll of a jump cut and there's no way RS wants a repeat of the Ash head scene from '79!)

jonesy the catMay 05, 2012
i agree. wtf millburn? and why is he wearing glasses? with all the technological and medical advances i'm sure they could have cured any sight illness by then. i'm guessing he uses them to look cool. a hipster in space. wanker

OutlanderMay 05, 2012
I think there is an edit in between the point where he is initially bitten and then point where it slithers into his suit.
Based on the audio puzzle, I think it bites him and coils around his arm. He's screaming and trying to get help, and it tightens to the point where it crushes his arm. In doing so it tears a whole in his suit.
As the crew is trying to help him, the thing suddenly uncoils and then slides into the hole it has created.
I'm guessing this because the arm itself looks very limp, and seemingly some exposed flesh under the tear in the suit.

Alien DNAMay 05, 2012
Well if it's not a good idea to pet a cobra back home, then I'd say it's pretty common sense not to pet what looks like a cobra in an alien temple light years from home.

Kane77May 05, 2012
@Alien DNA
good explained..yeah its his right arm, after the worm got under his armour, then his left hand touches his right arm..
