MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 6:33 PMThis is the Alien 3 that ››› I ‹‹‹ wanted to see. They never should have fired Vincent Ward. Maybe there's even hope that he'll turn it into a different film featuring a different alien threat... ???

AdminPraetorianMay-04-2012 6:50 PMTragic how the money men/suits interfere in art isn't it. Want to really pull your hair out?? Watch "Dangerous Days" the documentary about the making of Blade Runner. They almost ruined that movie with their meddling and lack of vision. *can't find the link from YouTube, it's been deleted. :(

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 7:44 PM@sukkal: thanx for posting the link.
i had heard rumors here and there about "a planet made of wood"
as part of the early draft for Alien3, so this helps to clarify what
i had read over the years
that concept is really out there,
i will give Ward due credit for not writing a reworked carbon copy
of ALIEN, much the way Cameron did, for at least taking a chance
on something different
at the same time, i think it was a bit too out of the box for
what ALIEN had established story wise, as well as tone, etc...
still, i can find traces of Ward's ideas in Fincher's Alien3,
so the next time i happen to catch that one on TV, i will
look even more for said elements

I agree that it's a radical departure, but I don't think it's one that would have killed the franchise and what they ended up with was such a disaster (in terms of script (and so many other things)) that I think this COULD have been much better. I feels very The Name of the Rose to me. I love that film.
The Blu-Ray has the 2003 version of Alien3 on it. It's VERY different in some key areas from the original (which is probably the only one you'll see on TV), but in some ways more true to FINCHER's original vision.

MemberFacehuggerMay-04-2012 9:19 PMI love the whole vibe. Alien 3 was just as much of a departure from Aliens as this would have been. I just hate that Newt, Hicks AND Bishop buy it.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

I really really like William Gibson. I've never met him, but there are always very very odd coincidences that go on when I read his books. I'll pick one up and start reading it and it opens in Chiba, Japan and that's where I'm living at the time. Or I'll buy one at a bookstore in Charleston, SC and start reading and it's talking about "cypress" something or other and I've just eaten at a restaurant by that name.
I have to say, though, I didn't find much in this that really pulled me in. I think it's just not his medium. I didn't buy the spores as a transmission vector. It seemed just a bit too convenient. That and the impregnation by simple bite. That's a little too "zombie" for me.
