An Insult to true fans of the Alien franchise

I work for a company that does test screenings of films, so I know a little bit about the decision making process that occurs for filmmakers in the post production process (no - I haven't seen this film, nor do I know anybody who has). What I do know is that film companies often purposefully deceive the public at large in order to hide a film's true plot. That would be great if this ended up being true for Prometheus. However, in this case, I believe that many of you folks online have this movie pretty much figured out - sadly, it's not going to be a prequel or even an origins film for that matter. This film is truly going to be an original stand alone feature, much like if Robert Zemeckis decided to do a Back to the Future prequel revolving around Marty McFly's neighbors. Of course, a film set in Hill Valley without a time traveling DeLorean would be a true disappointment and an insult to fans. And that's exactly what I think Prometheus will end up being. I think the general fan base wants to see an actual "Alien" prequel; at least something showing the origin of the Xenomorph. I think Ridley Scott is doing a real disservice to his fans by producing a film that essentially has nothing to do with its predecessors. I mean, what folks really want to see is the "alien". I think the Prometheus filmmakers were worried that if they did a true Alien prequel that it would bomb just like with the AVP franchise. Also, I think Scott didn't want to do the same thing twice, or in essence, monopolize on something that everybody has already seen. That's smart, but not necessarily wise in an era of sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots. I think he may have missed a good opportunity to explore a great origins piece. Instead, I don't know what we're going to get, but from what I've heard and read online, this movie is going to be a far cry from what we truly want it to be. That's my word, what's yours? -Thomas

I disagree in the instance of Prometheus. MOST of us here have a handle on the story, and know that the ole xeno won't be making a cameo. MOST of us here are still very, very excited about this movie. In fact, myself included, I think a lot of people on here hope for a ground-breaking sci-fi movie to usher in a new age. Certainly...another ole xeno movie could NOT deliver that!

Folks haven't seen so much as a hint of a single xeno in the trailers. Given that, along with the fact that "Alien" is nowhere to be found in the title. I seriously doubt most people will be stupid enough to have any expectation for xenos in this film.

I agree with you azalard. I'm expecting "Kingdom of Heaven in Space".

I too disagree. There are no direct xenomorphs as said by ridley. What you see is the making of xenomorph. So if the xenomorphs are not there to begin with, how come there is going to be insult to franchise? beats me.

What the fuck could a new "Alien" film do that we haven't already seen? I'm not talking about big special effects either. I really hope that's not what fans want. I want something new. I trust RS. And I've always been more interested in the SJ than the Aliens. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Aliens. But I've wanted a decent explaination of what the hell the SJs are and why6 they're transporting that cargo since I saw Alien.

I guess I am not a "true" fan then. I for one am looking forward to an original story and one void of the iconic "alien." Alien is one of my favorite films. I love Giger's iconic creature design. But let's face it, the critter has been used to death. It's time to explore the larger universe and see what other horrors lie waiting for hapless explorers, blue collar space truckers an "artificial" people.

Our culture has be sensitized to the "zeno" (video games, comics, movies..etc) so new forms of creatures are a must if this movie is going to to create any sense of fear and all the other emotions as the original did. Ridley has confirmed that the last 8 minutes will be his homage to Alien. I feel there will be a connection. Looking at all the "DNA" of Alien in the trailers I am satisfied. I think this will not be a disservice but really bring ADULT sci-fi back to the main stream.

You have listed exactly what I would have hoped they'd do - and every single reason I would want to see it.

I disagree. I am a huge fan of ALIEN, but what I "really" want to see isn't the ALIEN. That's already been done before. I just want another great Sci-Fi movie from Ridley. If it ties into ALIEN someway, then all the better. (In fact we already know it ties in - There's a SJ in the same/similar SJ Chair and the same company is in it.)

I hope it is going to be a great film, and I don't see it as an insult to the fans of the franchise (I define myself a fan). Only time will tell if there are real connections to Alien or not (though the visuals seem to point in that direction), but I for one am glad that it is not a true prequel, as it could give some clues as to what that ship on LV-426 was, without completely spoiling its mistery. And also, the fact that I don't know how it is going to end, makes me even more thrilled.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

anything can be good if its done right. The alien may have been done to death but so have horror movies in general. I seriously doubt this movie will top its predecessor, ya Giger designed some murals for this, and a mountain, but he didn't design the creatures, (even the engineers are not his original idea of what would become the space jockey), all of this is R. Scott and some other team he assembled. Alien is Giger's creation, Giger's world, Prometheus is R. Scott's world, quite clearly.

I would be very disappointed as would many fans if it was a true prequel that unraveled everything to do with Alien but also if it didn't answer certain questions that we want answered. The idea of building more around the Xenomorph, creation, and the possibility of having the SJ or creaters destroy Earth is absolutly amazing, and would answer a lot of questions that the fans still have, the main one of course being where did the Xenomorph come from. I find it hard to believe that the Prometheus film makers would change the story due to the fear of having it flop at the box office like AvP, (cross overs are never great movies), as far as I'm concerned just because you have two "species" or creatures, with one (SJ) possibly behind the creation of the other (Xenomorph) does not guarentee the failure of movie. A bad plot, bad actors, bad characters etc. does. However if you make a well thoughtout, thought provoking prequel then there should be no fear as to whether or not the movie will do well. You are going to attract the fans from the original movie/series and those who just want to watch a good sci-fi/horror film. Honestly I'm hoping that this is a prequel to some degree, I don't want an Xenomorph to pop out and start destroying the crew and end up having a duel between the Xenomorph and SJ but I definitly think it should show something that relates between the two movies (Prometheus and Alien). I guess all we can do is wait for the 8th of June (or whenever it comes out based on where you are) and hope for the best. However if it doesn't turn out to be a prequel or relate in anyway shape or form, hopefully it will be an amazing stand alone film. & my last bit of opinion is that I agree, I think Ridley Scott will have lost out on a chance to make an amazing movie and pleasing fans.

Trailer convinced me enough. so even if it turns out to be like AVP part 1. I don't mind. I would then expect prometheus 2 as well. It is nice to digg into SJs.

There's obviously 2 camps when it comes to fans. Ridley type fans and Cameron type fans. Sounds like you might be a Cameron type fan, azalard. Nothing wrong with that. I for one am a Ridley type fan. Don't get me wrong, I love Aliens and all the sequels. Hell, I like AvP and almost like AvPR. But no film with the word "Alien" in it will ever out do the original imo. I think Prometheus has a chance at it, though

Azalard, Let's give the movie (and Ridley) the chance it deserves. This is a very risky move for Ridley, no matter how well he made it- since everyone originally wanted a true-blue xeno/SJ origins story. Many will discount it on that basis alone and decide not to see it. Take a moment and consider how poorly made many sci-fi films are these days, the lack of imagination, the endless remakes... how sad is it that I can walk into a bookstore and see many great sci-fi books, containing some killer concepts... that never show up on the screen? No, instead we get a Total Recall remake.. and Lockout (holy crap did that suck)... and John Carter (heads rolled on that one). Look, we wanted an R rating and we got it. It's going to be gory enough, like the original. It's going to tie into ALIEN somewhat, and it's already got the Space Jockey in it. You also get some new stuff, like that creepy mural thing, humans exploring the Derelict ship in greater depth, and some newer monsters. Go see it guys, support Ridley. If it does well, I'm willing to bet the studio will give the green light for a second part that either ties into ALIEN even more.

@azalard I have to disagree completely with you, unless I misunderstood you. And even though it seems we have figured it out, nobody has seen the whole movie yet and I suspect that it will be a real surprise, specially in the last 8 minutes as Ridley Scott has said many times.

First of all, let me preface my reply by stating how much I appreciate everybody's responses. I enjoy constructive criticism, even when my views and opinions are not necessarily popular. Kudos to all of you who took the time to write your replies. I posted on a previous blog over the weekend, and a majority of the people I chatted with were very hateful. I was shocked. Furthermore, those people seemed more interested in contesting my occupation, rather than reading what it was I was trying to say. In their defense, I realize that there are a lot of people going around saying that they've "seen" advanced screenings of this film, when they really haven't. Unfortunately, I am not one such individual. Essentially, I agree with each and every one of you. Sometimes a little interactive criticism is just what I need to rethink my previous position on something. Like all of you, I think Alien (1979) was a masterpiece in Science Fiction-Horror. Another one of my favorites is John Carpenter's The Thing. That was fantastic work of fiction. I think the prequel that they recently released, though I haven't seen it yet, was wholly unnecessary (but that's another argument for another blog). At any rate, I truly have a good sense about this film. I think when I speak to this being a "disservice" to fans, I am referring to all of those who have expressed a sincere desire for a true "Alien" prequel/origins film. However, I believe these folks are truly in for a disappointment, or like one of you guys said, this film isn't going to have the Xenomorph popping up all over the ship in every other scene. From what I've read all over the web, folks seem obsessed with whether or not the ship and the planet are the same from the original Alien. This tells me that there are a good number of individuals focusing on the wrong thing. Maybe it's a good thing Scott made certain things clear about this movie when he did, or we'd all be running around chanting, "LV-426 or bust!" Here's my final point: I was disappointed with Alien 3. I was even more disappointed with Alien Resurrection, not to mention the AvP films. I guess there's a part of me wishing that somebody would do an "Alien 5" in the way Alien 3 should have originally been done. -Thomas
