I can't figure out why the SJ snorkle in alien is longer and attached while the snorkle in Prometheus is so short and unattached. What gives?

the snorkles in the hologram that David watches seem longer, too. The snorkle on the Jockey in the chair seems very short. And the snorkle on the SJ helmet the crew brings back is almost non existent.

LOL....When I first came in here, I thought that it was a gripe post about Snorkelbottom. Never heard of an SJ trunk being called a snorkel, but I'd buy it!

Has anyone noticed the face that flashes through the birds wings on the Scott free productions logo at the becoming of the movie trailers?

Hello: Lets not forget that "Prometheus" takes place quite a bit before "Alien." It's not unreasonable to assume a degree of evolution in both the SJ as well as the ever changing Xenomorph. So one trunk/snorkel is longer and one is shorter. I'll thankfully refrain from the mentioning the "longer" - "shorter" stereotypes between certain groups of humans. OR.... Like humans, no two are alike. OR.... We know the "Alien" adopts certain characteristics of its host (Predalien - Ripley to name but 2) so why wouldn't the SJ change? MOST LIKELY.... The original molds for the SJ outfit (1979) were probably destroyed, tossed or lost decades ago and Sir Ridley didn't want to spend God knows how much time and money figuring out the length of a SJ trunk/snorkel just to keep a bunch of idiots (of which I am proudly one I might add) from commenting. i havent been with TON of men but i dont remember their "crotch snorkel" retracting, lol. technically it has its own normal "relaxed" size and blood flow causes it to swell. it is already on the outside of the body so it has no place to retract to. i think the only "retractable" organs in that area belong to creatures more like fish, reptiles, snails, so on. mostly animals with a cloaca ^_^

@Belladonna Your experience notwithstanding.... : ) It IS possible to have a retracting snorkel, but it is usually found on the outer planets where the temperature is below zero (Fahrenheit) and in Chicago (Earth, North America, USA) during the winter months. Retracting Snorkel Syndrome (RTS) is usually found when, as noted above, the temperature drops below zero. It is also known to arise (so to speak) when Ethanol and people from Scotland are involved; Jonathan Walker and the various Glen's come to mind. The last occurrence seems to be an exceeding rare event, and is usually (97.59%) followed by a quote worthy of the Nobel Prize Committee before choosing a recipient ("That has never happened before !!!"). A little known fact about Weyland Industries ... they were the equivalent of the corner grocer when Peter Weyland's father, Wanker Weyland, decided to invest in a company that claimed to have found a cure for RTS. It was his foresight that gave Weyland the funds to build spaceships and start terraforming. He had a little incentive, for both a spaceship and a different place to live, from the father (who had a 12 bore shotgun) of a gal named Bridie in County Cork but the company doesn't talk about that anymore. "Done in the name of research, ma boy." Anyway, other companies passed on the investment and the old Wanker made Billions and Billions. Apparently everyone else underestimated the desire for the human race to propagate at 2am on a Saturday evening but the Wanker knew. The rest is history. Kind Regards, Ron

@belladonna
i havent been with TON of men but i dont remember their "crotch snorkel" retracting, lol.
That's because at a mere glance of your beauty (looking at your avatar), the "snorkel" is no longer in the retracted position. ; )
it is already on the outside of the body so it has no place to retract to.
Men have a cavity between their groin that is just for said purpose. We can even stuff our marbles in there manually (this happens naturally in a cold swimming pool). Men are simply women with extra "stuff". If it got all pushed in, we'd be women minus the hormones (not to mention some pulverized marbles).

You have to remember Alien is 30yrs old and who knows what ideas and thoughts Ridley had on the SJ at the time as it's only in one small scene. Most likely explanation is just design change, as he thought of the idea for this movie the old design doesn't really fit and this is what we end up with.
