MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 7:42 AMJust ask X3. His thesis is that demons don't like us, and predators hunt demons.

That one or flip-flops, you choose.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 8:09 AMThe new featurette shows more interesting aspects about Holloway.
I hate his style (flip-flops and all), and he seems to be the character that has to be liked less by the audience, but his "no shit" approach and his interaction with David (which has been hinted at in several interviews) are really intriguing. I can't wait to see them tease each other more and more.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 8:51 AMA thesis isn't a single concise statement, even though it will probably be represented that way in the film. That conversation would be more correct if David simply used the word "theory".
And in that sense, Holloway's theory would probably be that the earth was seeded with life, and/or early man was helped by highly advanced and presumably benevolent aliens. That seems to sort of be the central question of the film, so it makes sense to me.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 9:03 AMAren't these questions the purpose of the actual film to answer?

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 9:10 AMI'd say it's pretty obvious at this point that what he means by Holloway's thesis is the whole chariots-of-the-gods thing, the pictograph being a map to our creators, etc.
On another note - Holloway really sort of comes across as an arrogant putz in some of these trailers/tv spots. Just sayin'.

MemberDeaconMay-10-2012 9:16 AMWell its simply that Holloway beleaves that mankind was given a hand in our creation.
Which goes with the Alien Creation theory.....
And thus no ONE SINGLE GOD who creates us from nothing or dust.
And no wonky Evolution theory that Science keeps changing, or Big Bang that no one witnessed....
There is a 3rd theory that stands in the middle one that matches many parts of both. A theory that indeed has simularities to many many ancient cultures.
This theory is the back story of Prometheus movie and Holloways Thesis.
But remember its just a movie, its not saying its true, its not saying Evolution is not True....
The movie wont upset Evolutionists, many would have open mind to it being a posibility......
The Abrahamic religious however will be doing their nuts in...

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 10:50 AMMuch time ago I read something in the spirit that Halloway and Shaw were lovers/camarades, but there would be some tension between then in the sense that Shaw was a "believer" and Halloway a more "scientifically oriented" guy. Ironically, the "astronaut gods" theory is equally insatisfatory to both worldviews: if you believe in God and specially if you are Jew, Christian or Muslim, you really don´t want alien things messing with the creation of God; and if you are a darwinist that believes natural selection is enough to create life and us, the same objection holds.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 10:58 AMEven if aliens made us it still leaves the question who made them ? If they came to earth and fiddled with the existing life then what started that life.
personally i think that God is the big bang or that the big bang was the Word of God. As for the scriptures there are going to be big translation problems when you take hebrew and convert it to roman and then let it stew for 2000 years. So who really knows what was actually said in the original.
personally and without wanting to sound too god-bothery its all about faith, no one can prove God exists but then again no one can disprove it either so its a bit of a Paradox. If you try too hard to understand it you might hurt yourself

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 11:03 AMThere is an old translation from Genesis ( sorry but i read this years ago so cant tell you where ) which states that when God "came" to the earth it was void and without form. This is subjective language it could have meant that there was stuff going on but he didnt like it and started again.
like prepping a nice bit of land and leaving it fallow for a bit, when you come back stuff will be growing which you had no hand in then you would plough it over and put in what you intended.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 11:32 AMGod is a scientist and an engineer.
Just look at DNA - blueprints for life.
Just look at sub-atomic particles - blueprints for matter and anti-matter.
Just look at the ever-expanding, 17 billion year old Universe with hundreds of billions of galaxies, each containing billions of stars.
Just look at the 4 billion old earth and our own existence, which barely registers a thousand millenia.
We are humbled into insignificance.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 11:39 AMBig Dave, this theory starts from the Abrahamic religion, it's in genesis, or the first book of Torah, whichever you prefer. there's a hierarchy of Gods and creators in Genesis. Thats why evangelists only mention the first few verses of it.

The abrahamic religions already have an account thats not too distinct from the first 15mins of Prometheus. It's odd that no one asks more questions about who these nephilim and original 'sons of god' etc were, but there's a book called The Gnostic Gospels which into quite some detail on it.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 11:55 AMWell if we consider panspermia for abiogenesis for the beginning then this movie has input for that. What evolution has to do with this movie is beyond me. Evolution is about change in organism over period of time. It has nothing to do with whether god created or alien created the life. Evolution is more about progress, even with or without creationism or abiogenesis. Bending religion as per the progress in science and then ignoring the previous assumptions in religion with excuse of poor translation is fun stuff.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

MemberOvomorphMay-10-2012 2:10 PMWell, as far as i remember, Holloway mentioned the immorality of avatar theft, and how one avatar is associated with one forum member at a time.

BigDave
MemberDeaconMay-10-2012 3:38 PMBut does the Bible not say.... The Earth was baron and Lifeless about 6000 years ago?
Its like a Scientist who made the theory of the Big Bang saying he is right because his book on the Big Bang was written at the begining of time...
Also does the Bible not say about mankind...
"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness"
Now if there was just one God should that not go....
Let me make man in MY image, after MY likeness?

MemberOvomorphMay-11-2012 8:54 AM@Sky,
I´m afraid you´re..."so wrong".
First: evolution isn´t about "progress", evolution is about "fitness", a concept far away from positivist theories. For example, parasites can be better adapted than some of their hosts, but nobody usually thinks of intestinal parasites as the beacons of progress.
Second: the problem with panspermia is that it is conceptually ok, but usually a tool used by design-oriented minds to postpone the problem of creation of something from "nothing". Occam´s razor would recommend that we confront this problem first.
Actually I think that panspermia can occur inside planetary systems, but I´m very skeptical of this ocurring along interestellar distances. I´m much more skeptical of intelligent-driven panspermia as seems to be the propostal of the movie.

MemberOvomorphJan-11-2013 12:06 PM The use of the word 'Thesis' by David at this early point in the story is curious. He could have and should have used the word theory.
Taking the scene at the console in total I think David was prodding/poking at Holloway because in David's mind he was the smartest 'person' in the room and wanted Charlie to realize that.
I think think it continues the Teacher/Student theme first seen by me in the crew meeting as Holloway/Shaw are talking . Vickers is pacing the back of the 'class' looking everybody over just to see who is attentive.
In any case I thinking David is mocking Holloway and his theory knowing that the Gods' are motal after all.
