Hi, Brett:
I don't think it's cheesy at all, friend. Though I have to say that a secret expedition wouldn't need [nor want] the name in the Ship...

It's more about tradition in any (near enough any) given marine/naval fleet and passenger liners to have the vessels 'name sake'/designation stated upon the exterior of the ships hull as a curtesy to other vessels for idendification purposes should one ecounter the other in distress. (i.e: Titanic) Then from one clear line-of-sight vanatge point to the other the identification process can be easier to facilitate and thus a 'rescue/salvage' endeavor can be put into effect much more speadily as a result should the need to do so arise.

Not exactly unheard of. Actually, all the space shuttles had their names written over their hulls, albeit not in such glamurous style:

Not to mention every plane, and every sea faring vessel has its name painted on it. This is just the way it is, nothing cheesy. Although David 1 brings up a point, with this being a secret mission and all. Otherwise, par for the course.

I think the point is actually about the huge prominence of the name not the simple fact of it being there?
It struck me a little, too, when I saw the newest trailer.
I think most people know or can come to some kind of reasonable conclusion why the name would be there, (even if issues of line of sight had any meaning as far as Space vessels are concerned), I just couldn't help query why it is there, like that. It's HUGE!
An, apparently, unnecessarily huge and out of scale excercise of forceful and pointless overstatement....
In another movie, I think it would read as cheesy but, in this context, I'm more inclined to think it's supposed to give us a very clear and deliberate clue as to the character of he, or they, who made it.
A person who knows enough what the name actually relates to and yet names his ship after it - and then plasters that name so very hugely on that ship, which he send on a Mission it seems to have been specifically designed for?....
That man has to be making several profound statements about himself, his objectives and his own view of his predominance.

You want fries with that cheese. I don't take kindly to all the haters and unbelievers who come into our humble abode and try and try to put down our little ship that could. That kind of talk is frowned upon in this here parts. And yeah the name is big for a reason, it's ahh more uhm aerodynamic.

Though I agree than having the name of the ship painted on the hull can be a necessity, I was struck by its size.
As allinamberclad suggests, it's really, pointlessly huge, to the brink of ridiculousness. Also, I don't remember seeing it in other trailers so it could either be that they've added it lately, in the final post production edits, or that it has been especially added for the trailers.
Another possibility could be that, since the project has several sponsors, they are using Prometheus as a space billboard (though I wonder who might be the addressee of those ads) and the word "Prometheus" is just a placeholder for Coca-Cola, Marlboro or whatever other products they're going to place in the movie.
(For the ironically challenged, I am kidding)
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

It,s for ''old man Weyland'', so he does not accidently board the wrong ship. Take care everyone.

Hahaha ... that 'logo' has been camera tracked with VFX and placed there for a laugh ... that version will not be on the ship looking like that ... it's too big for starters and it's not following the contours of the ship either ...
lol @ Sundar ...
May 11, 2012
Uh, why wouldn't you write the name of the ship on the ship?

Oh, those Federation cheeseballs!
May 11, 2012
I'm not saying they wouldn't or couldn't ... but they need a better sign artist than the one they used in the Trailer ;) ...
I think it's a POST thing to be added properly in the final stages ...

@brett, noxworld
I see your point.
I think that what is secret is the mission, not the name of the mission, so the printing of the name in the hull, whatever the size, doesn´t put the mission in risk.
This said, I agree that oversized printing performs no other function than foolproofing the ship´s name just in case there are some distracted viewers in the cinema...

A boastful corporation like Weyland not putting their name on everything? Now that's unheard of. Just look at ALIENS - the staff's coffee mugs had the WY logo printed on them for crying out loud.
Companies are proud of their creations so they put their branded logo on it to let everyone know they made it. I don't have a problem with it personally. It makes sense. Cheesy? I don't think it's that cheesy.

Some lonely pilot in a drafty Juggernaut could be thinking: "Next time I'll book with Prometheus Air.com, their fleet looks way better!!"
No really, I agree with Gem]n[, it's (badly) done for the purpose of the trailer for those poor souls still in doubt, whether it's the name of the ship or not. We don't want to see that in the movie, huh?
EDIT: At some stage during the principal photography of ALIEN, the Nostromo also had its name printed in large letters on the side, but I'm not sure if it made it into the final cut, at least I'm glad I don't recall it.
