SJs are SJs, not humans. They had some kind of trouble over the long evolution that made them unable to replicate, give birth to be able to save their race from extinction. (like us humans or animals have "sex" to give life and maintain it) So the SJs are jockey-ing through space, observing lifeforms, species, to come up with a modification to their own "DNA" system or whatever they have, so they can "cure" themselves in a manner so they can reproduce properly. They construct (like a GOD) a life-form capable of doing the things SJs want. Like reproduction. Having a "life". Being so versatile to maintain every aspect of life, survive through tough things and so on. They create an extremely resilient type of lifeform that can stay alive even on top of an iceberg (like a virus or bacteria that eats up things and multiplies).
So SJs thought:
-Oki we have this new species, but to be able to examine its "structure" (DNA) we gonna "inject" a planet with them so they grow, populate, give births, have lifes and see what becomes of them.
Space Jockeys give great hope to their new project. They are desperate. This new species resembles the SJs, two legs, two arms, "like a human". So they create one. (like humans created DAVID who is nearly fully human-like) This new creature evolves, thinks, lives, and becomes tired of being the test subject of the SJs so it tries to escape. Lets think of it as a programmed, genetically engineered creature with the goal of reproduction and staying alive, keeping the species alive. Somehow it disrupts something so it can escape but the SJs can not follow or stop it. It somehow lands on a planet (Earth) it was ment to land on but with its own motivations, and preprogrammed goals.
Humankind emerges. It is like a caveman because it came from a super advanced place and ended up on Earth, where there is water, rock, animals and plants. So this human species starts its own evolution until the days the movie talks about.
So boom people on earth start to evolve. To a point humans will be capable of going back to their origins, up to the space jockeys. So they do, and we know humans: humans sometimes make stupid selfish stuff like getting power only for themselves. So humans up there (at least 1 or 2 of them) are jealous and think: hey the "god's" (SJ's) tech is right here, lets steal it for our needs and make weapons!
Prometheus was punished in the myth. Maybe SJs became so advanced, they could "fuse" with material, but in the long evolution process they lost their GIFT or ability of being reproductive. Thats how i think about it like their punishment. Our punishment? (us humans) I think about it like we were playing god, creating DAVID, but our own creation screwd us up (not necessarily intentially cuz DAVID wasnt a human, only close to it) by altering the "human DNA" to create more perfect humans.
DAVID thinks he is alone, so he tries to create a more superb version of himself ending up creating an ALIEN which tries to escape.
DAVID thought with his semi-human thinking mechanism. Here is advanced tech DNA altering stuff, lets make a more advanced form of humans. So they need less things to advance in life, reproduce easier, grow faster. DAVE altered the species but it escaped, going through evolutionary phases very fast. I think they will kill it but DAVE makes another one and makes it so that the last SJ is infected with it. So the "derelict" ship flyes away but humans know about this and want to stop it by crashing a ship into it so it lands on LV426, stopping the threat travelling to earth.
So the SJs were not ment to destroy earths population, they were going to create a new race they can observe and learn from and later on create a cure for their reproductive ability. New race created, incredible ability to live on earth but this species destroys the SJs. DAVID enhances this to xenomorph levels and xeno destroys humans. Its a vicious circle, its about decieving your creator, like humans deceived their god in the bible.
So they unpurposedly created a "weapon" not a race they can benefit from. So humans became a threat to them, like we see in the movie cuz hell breaks loose there and u can belive me when i say it wasnt the SJ who started it.
