MemberOvomorphMay-15-2012 9:34 PMi am very fond of Jerry Goldsmiths score. Although all of it is fantastic,
i particularly enjoy the kind of strange parts that were subdued in or cut from
the film which make use of the instrumentation like the conch, serpent, digeridu, and other
horn like instruments - typically meant to represent the appearance of the alien-
such as the following tracks from various versions of the score:
Hanging On
Parker's Death
The Face Hugger
does anyone happen to know of any other examples of music where i might
find this kind of sound/instrumentation and style ?

Personally, I'd strongly recommend ANY of Goldsmith's scores, Planet of the Apes is another interesting one, as is the score for Papillon.
Stylistically they're wonderfully idiosyncratic and layered (:

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 12:38 AMim relatively familiar with Goldsmith's work, although i dont know those two scores. ive always been a fan. i will certainly check them out, but i am particularly interested in some of the direction he visited in alien. i will also seek out more tribal music of multiple cultures, i am usually interested in this kind of thing as well. thanks for the tips!

MemberOvomorphMay-17-2012 9:21 AMHis score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture is amazing work. Should have won him an Oscar!
If you've not heard his score for Ridley's "Legend," do yourself a favor and remedy that! It's really strong and completely changes the vibe of the film to something more epic.
