Engineering culture. Spoiler?

Crazy idea. We know an engineer sacrifices himself at the start of the movie, drinking some concoction and melting away. What if the whole culture of the engineers is all about sacrifice, mating, creating, engineering, all aspects require a sacrifice. It could explain the eggs in the derelict, and the holes in the sarcophagus in the Juggernaut. Maybe the eggs are made for engineers to sacrifice themselves, not as "the" weapon, but as a sacrifice to create life or even a weapon. Maybe the alien is part of this, some sort of intricate and macabre circle of life and death.
