We know an engineer sacrifices himself at the start of the movie, drinking some concoction and melting away. What if the whole culture of the engineers is all about sacrifice, mating, creating, engineering, all aspects require a sacrifice. It could explain the eggs in the derelict, and the holes in the sarcophagus in the Juggernaut. Maybe the eggs are made for engineers to sacrifice themselves, not as "the" weapon, but as a sacrifice to create life or even a weapon. Maybe the alien is part of this, some sort of intricate and macabre circle of life and death.

AdminPraetorianMay-23-2012 5:35 AMI like that theory, and it's not a scenario unheard of outside the realm of science fiction. It even happens in nature; After mating, the female Black Widow spider almost always eats the male, his body becomes a sacrifice nourishing the future brood of spiders.

The only think I dislike is the sarcophagus idea, it is too AVP ish. :(

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 7:43 AMI personally think the Engineer in the beginning of the film is sentenced to die and is forced to drink the potion that kills him. The fact that he inadvertently sows the seeds for life on our planet is an unintended aftereffect of his demise. This might be why the Engineers want to send the ship to wipe out life on earth later in the film when they learn of our existence. Maybe the earth was supposed to serve as a tomb for some alien king that was sentenced to die here.
