Interesting interview. Thanks.
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids?
They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

CyberdeathMay 23, 2012
When he refers to the classic chest burst dinner table scene as a 'birth', it makes me wonder about the track with the same name in the Prometheus soundtrack.

NateBlitzMay 23, 2012
They said Ridley never directed a sequel.... 'Hannibal' was a sequel to 'Silence Of The Lambs'...

I would give this thread a better title, will garner more attention. I almost posted it up not realising this was it until reading the interview
Anyway... an interesting insight here:
What do you think of the other Alien films that followed your original?
I don't count the last few movies. I know why they did it: to promote the franchise and, hello, it's about money. This is not denigrating any filmmaker, because it is hard enough, God knows. But I really was a little bit upset by how my baby was being misused. We came up with one of the best all-time monsters. Without that monster, I've got a nice, very well-acted, beautifully art-directed movie, but I ain't got that fucking heart-stopping son of a bitch that defies logic.

John D.May 23, 2012
@MVMNT: That right there is the single most important quote that I think anyone should read re: Ridley and what is/isn't "canon" to the Alien series.
If Ridley Scott can ignore the last few movies, then the rest of us should feel free to do the same.

Biehn_BanditMay 23, 2012
I'm way ahead of you Mr. Scott. AvP, Alien3, and Ressurection have never, and will never be canon to me. What's next? People will start claiming Alien vs. Batman is canon.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
Hooray !!!
maybe now most of you whom still don't will start to get it !!!
This is an EVENT not a film and it is 100%...I personally Guarren-f'n t'ya... that this thing is a Smash Hit Sensation already !!! To me it's just not Rocket Science and IMO one would have to be a bit lost and out of touch with reality to be knocking this thing or him in any way at all right now...bad move, in the end, all these people are going to look pretty dumb if you ask me! Incredible and Fantastic interview thank you for posting this. I think Rolling Stone is one of the Best Mags of all time for it's Film reviews. I have been subscribed to it since I was 12. Ridley was so relaxed he let the commoners like all of us be reminded of exactly why what I wrote above is 100% the truth! "The King" Having "His Rein" right now is "RIDLEY" !!!

Myrddin365May 23, 2012
Alien vs Superman is another dandy little bit of fiction......
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
By the 3way he did not say COUPLE he said FEW meaning ALIENS is NOT canon at all either !!! He's obviously still very very pissed at Both Cameron and Fox for the sequels and The way Fincher was treated or the Xenomorph was depicted in Resurrection didn't seem to matter at all, because he clearly said he doesn't count any of the last 3 films as Canon !!!
One=1
A Couple = 2
A Few = 3
and he 100% said...The Last "FEW", and he's mad no one got this up till now which pretty much makes is 100% official now, the ONLY canon at all now...Is :Promertheus & Alien and if you ask me it's about f'n time !!! I personally am overjoyed and have waited 33+ years to hear this exact thing because if you ask me ALIENS was the worst of the 4 films NOT Resurrection. I like the Camera work very very much that Cameron brought to Aliens but I am so glad, I have such a "GLAD HEART" now that none of them count as "CANON". 57 year Hyper Sleep now officially never ever Happened I absolutely Love it !!! This also means he can NOW BRING SIGOURNEY WEAVER BACK !!!

JelbrightMay 23, 2012
A few generally means 3 (Alien Res, AvP & AvPR). So does that mean theat Alien 3 counts in his eyes? Still vague.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
True Dat...but I believe he was never even discussing the 2 AVP films in that quote because he addressed all that right before he said it SLAMMING FOX for what I have said all along, the MONEY GRAB that had nothing to do with the franchise to begin with, made zero sense, and was already discounted... he meant the 4 Franchise films...CLEARLY !!! And there's another thing... which completely supports my thoughts here...He clearly has contempt for all 3 guys Junet, Fincher, Cameron + for Fox...for being so stupid as to not even THINK of addressing the Jockey and for what they did to The Xenomorph which he seems to be clearly saying as well is In this film..but again... the WAY HE wanted it to be !!!!!!

JelbrightMay 23, 2012
Then none count by that math. He wouldn't have said "last few" if none at all but the original count. He has already thrown Aliens links in Prometheus viral pics (loader) and spelling of Weyland.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
I am very hopeful Aliens and everything after ALIEN accept Prometheus is TOAST now !!! have you watched Aliens recently, it has not aged well at all, in fact it really is the worst of the 4 films, if we leave out both AVP's !!!

JelbrightMay 23, 2012
I believe he refers to all 6 movies with the franchise word "Alien(s)" in the title in this reference. The driving factor for Prometheus is the fact that the AvP and Alien sequels were all sooo bad! (Aliens was ok at points)

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
i read it again and I am wrong and you are right However...I am still overjoyed that at least Resurrection, and it's retarded ending, plus both AVP films, are Officially TOAST !!! I WOULD LOVE FOR HIM TO DO THE SAME WITH ALIEN 3 WHICH I SAY IS THE ALL TIME BEST OF THE 6 FILMS AND ALIENS AND BRING WEAVER AND RIPLEY...BACK !!! WOULD DEARLY LOVE TO SEE THAT !!!
Alien DroneMay 23, 2012
Wow, it still doesn't matter what Ridley says, Fox owns it and paid for and makes the decisions as to what they want. Ridley works for Fox......not the other way around! Ridley does what Fox allows. Without Fox, we wouldn't even have the movie Alien. In fact if it hadn't been for Fox giving him a chance we would have never heard of Ridley, his first feature movie, The Duellists, was a flop at the box office. To his credit, he did see how well scifi was received with Star Wars and was able to capitalize on that genre and thus Alien was a success.
So, he doesn't own the rights to the movie or to the ideas in the movie nor does he make that decision of what is canon, Fox decides that!
I know I'll get a bunch of crap for this, but before you do, if GM makes a car and some engineer designs the car, engineers and directs it's creation, when it comes to the dealer to be sold, is it the engineers car and named for him or is it called a Chevy or Buick, we all know the answer to that. Also if there is a second generation car or a third or so on, say maybe a Corvette, is it still part of the family and still a Corvette, you bet it is! So why wouldn't other films by the same company that owns ALL the rights to it, that paid all the employees to make it, not have the right to say what is canon? THINK ABOUT IT!

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
wrong and you did not READ the thread I guess because Scott now CLEARLY has the rights you just claimed FOX still had.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
also Scott...could buy and sell Fox 50 times over because they own NOTHING REALLY, mathematically every single film they have ever made has operated with a NET LOSS in the end, including all 6 so called alien films.
Alien DroneMay 23, 2012
No, Sega only has licensing rights from Fox to design games....a very big difference!

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
Colonial Marines is created in partnership with SEGA, a company that owns the rights of the Aliens franchise.

John D.May 23, 2012
Actually, Alien Drone is right. Sega owns the license to produce video games based on the Alien and Predator properties.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/sega-will-hatch-alien-games-145956
Thus they are now the only game company that can legally produce games featuring the characters/settings/etc. from the series. More here:

Alien DroneMay 23, 2012
Sega bought the electronic rights December 11 2006, not the film rights! Sega does not own the rights to the films, nor does Ridley.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
ya know what to be fair I researched this extensively and YOU are right again, the rights they have are to make 2 Games HOWEVER, They are using many of the people who worked on Both Alien and ALEINS to make them. I also believe in my holiest of holies that The World has nothing but Disdain for FOX and their owning those rights because they have CLEARLY done a MASSIVE disservice to this franchise with Their complete Money Grubbing B.S. In the end though it is NOT fox that tells Ridley what he can and cannot use, they ADORE him, and listen to HIM first, not the other way around !!! They dictate a Budget and that's pretty much the end of it, the creative control is ALL the directors and writers that are hired to produce the story outline the Director they hire submits. They have the rights to produce the films, and in almost all cases...not what goes In them!!!

John D.May 23, 2012
We should thank our lucky stars that the rights don't belong to a video game company *cough*SuperMarioBros.*cough*
Alien DroneMay 23, 2012
Go to any court in the land to decide who owns the movie or any movie and they will say, whoever paid for it. That's just the way it is. If Fox loved Ridley so much and thought his was the only vision, why all the other movies? Is Fox in it to make money, you bet they are, is Ridley making movies to make money, you bet he is! They all are.
Alien DroneMay 23, 2012
I really doubt that Ridley Scott has the money that Rupert Murdoch has. He owns 20th Century Fox.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
that's wrong, Ridley is NOT doing this for the money, he does it CLEARLY because he wants to and loves the creative process, that much is 100% undebateable by me. Owning a movie and controlling what goes in it are two entirely completely different things!!! They asked Ridley to come back over and over and he could not in each case because of prior commitents and they were then ones who decided to exploit the franchise for more money...
In the past almost 35 Years or more of this THERE IS BUT ONE AND ONLY ONE DOCUMENTED CASE IN WHICH THE SUITS AT FOX STEPPED IN AND CHANGED ANY PART OF ANY CREATIVE OR ANY PART OF ANY CREATIVE PROCESS IN ANY OF THE 6 FILMS AND IT WAS THE STORYBOARD FOR ACT 3 OF ALIEN IN WHICH PREPARED BOARDS WHICH SHOWED THE ALIEN SEXUALLY ASSAULTING RIPLEY THEN BITING OFF HER HEAD, AND THEN SITTING DOWN IN HER COMMAND CHAIR AND COMMUNICATING WITH EARTH IN HER VOICE.
IT IS THE ONE AND ONLY TIME SUITS AT FOX EVER WERE INVOLVED IN ANY CREATIVE OR CREATIVE PROCESS OF ANY OF THE 4 FILMS OTHERS THAN BUDGETARY CONCERNS!!!
THE COURTS HAVE HAD 100% OF NO SAY FOR ALL 35 OF THESE YEARS!!!
LMFAO !!!
AND AGAIN SCOTT COULD BUY FOX 50 TIMES OVER AND CREATE AND PAY FOR ANY ALIEN FILM HE WANTED HIMSELF AND FOX COULD NEVER DO A BLOODY THING TO STOP HIM IMO AND WOULDN'T EVEN BOTHER TRYING!!!
THE ONLY REASON THEY HAVE SCOTT WORKING ON THIS NOW IS THEY BEGGED HIM TO COME BACK...LITERALLY, BEGGED HIM, AND THE PRICE FOR THAT WITH ANY CREATIVE DIRECTOR SUCH AS SCOTT IS 100% FULL ARTISTIC AND CREATIVE CONTROL WHICH i BELIEVE FOX HAS STATED SEVERAL TIMES NOW THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY GIVEN HIM FOR THIS PROJECT!!!

can•on
noun
1. an ecclesiastical rule or law enacted by a council or other competent authority and, in the Roman Catholic Church, approved by the pope.
2. the body of ecclesiastical law.
3. the body of rules, principles, or standards accepted as axiomatic and universally binding in a field of study or art: the neoclassical canon.
4. a fundamental principle or general rule: the canons of good behavior.
5. a standard; criterion: the canons of taste.
I think that the word “Canon” has been bastardized to the point that it no longer has any solid meaning …at least in regard to films. It’s a word based in Greek, that basically means “measuring rod.” In times past, it was used to label what was canonical/authentic bible scripture…an what was not.
Qustion here is: Who is the pope of the Alien Universe…Ridley Scott or Fox?
For myself, I have always gone with Ridley…in the past. And I see Fox as sort of heretics…if you will, vying for a different, inferior, and cheapened version of the ALIEN Universe...or at least settling for it.
However, I think that Scott at least respects Cameron’s ALIENS (just as I do), otherwise he would not have referenced it in the new film; LV223, WeylanD, etc…

Sir Ridley is a workaholic? Honestly, that term, "workaholic", is such a degrading word. It shouldn't have to be degrading but people make it to be disrespectful towards people who could actually, God help us all, love to work. I personally think it's better to be a workaholic than to be an unproductive twat who only believes in partying and destroying his body with substance-abuse and what-not.....no offense to anyone here who likes to party; if you do, that's all well and good. My point is that sometimes it's the workaholic element that insures that your own creation is at its most perfect state. It's just that nobody can understand what it's like; they all just go "Oh you work too hard on your little project; get outside and enjoy life and stuff," and stuff.
As for how much he's getting paid.....that I don't know. Everybody knows that actors get paid astronomical amounts, but I think directors get jack-shit compared to them, and as such they only have their reputations and creative potential to bask in.

@Spartacus
Thanks. ^-^ Granted, I say this because I myself am a creator....or rather, creative; I've always been called "creative" throughout my life, now that I think about it. I've got my own little projects, which I hope to one day publish in the future....but my fear is that my own work could be "legally stolen", as I call it, not to mention that my work would have to be whored in order to keep up with the competition. I think my works would be better as videogames, but for now it's all concept art and other stuff. Though recently I've been on hiatus with them, and have been deriving creativity with MikuMikuDance videos, which is my first attempt at 3D, polygonal stuff....
...but enough about me. Anyway, I read the rest of the interview....I would've loved to see this interview on YouTube, just to hear Sir Ridley sling "fuck" every couple of seconds, or hear how he goes "Motherfucker," if his movie fails. Oh, and Blade Runner is his most personal work, eh? News to me.

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
@Alien Drone Rupert Murdoch...LMFAO...Dude..do you have ANY idea what would happen to Murdoch financially speaking in ANY BATTLE against Ridley Scott? Do you have any idea?, despite how rich he is, how very little credibility what so ever He has left and the massive amount of HATRED AND BIAS there exists for this man in almost every single country on this earth?

SpartacusMay 23, 2012
@CrazyDave55811 I hope you find a way cause I want to see the games you produce now!
