MemberOvomorphMay 27, 20121524 Views18 RepliesWhat other Alien film/media is Scott accepting for Prometheus? I've seen various small pieces to suggest that Aliens (directed by Cameron) is still functional, but what of Alien 3, Insurrection, the comics, etc? Are they canonical or were they retconned?
I already know that the AvP franchise was completely ignored, as stated by Scott himself.

the directors cut of Alien 3 was better than the theatrical release. even with the crappy CGI. i agree that Resurrection and the AVP movies are rubbish. Though each movie is a product of its time. James cameron had been doing B movies for years then with Aliens he gets a decent film, budget script. Alien 3 was finchers first film after solely doing music clips. RS first film is a historical effort strait up then he makes Alien, so he is showing the artist at work when he makes Alien. So its all got to be in context. The guy who made Resurrection made city of lost children and delicatessen. which are great movies. but those wild fanasty visions dont translate so well into the alien universe.

The fact people even ask these dumb questions about cannon I not figure out, do some damn research and look at the director of the movie already, do you think he gives a shit about comics or crappy spin offs ?

And remember each director has been a fan of Alien.....i wonder how they would have turned out had they NOT been fans.

Scott has said in interviews that he is not touching the other Alien films. Furthermore, this is not an Alien fanfiction (as I stated before) it is a completely new film. Fan service waters down a film and takes away from its integrity. He isn't going to pepper the plot with references to all the other Alien films and take away from the story and immersion of the new world he has created. In his most recent interview Scott said:
It’s interesting, for example, that the word Alien doesn’t appear in the title?
Well, this movie didn’t really have anything to do with it except for some tiny elements. It takes off on its own direction.

The only movie that is acceptable is Alien. I have never heard Mr. Scott putting down Aliens, but I think that he does not want to offend Mr. Cameron. But I loved Aliens, but like Shane stated Aliens does not have the character that Alien had. It's all action, and no substance.

the question is, for those this really is of ANY importance:
WHAT authority DO YOU ACCEPT this answer coming from ?
Ridley Scott, the director of the original, first Alien, which was the beginning of all other stuff taht followed ??
- the makers of Aliens, Aliens3 and 4 ?
- the makers of AvP, I and II ?
- the whole other franchise stuff, Dark Horse Comix etc..?
cheers

The comics were the best at show the DNA reflex from ALIEN SPECIES.

Insurrection was a terrible star trek movie.
So far there is a notion that Aliens and Alien 3 are. Has there been any proof of Alien:Resurrection as being canon [I hate that movie and barely remember it except i paid for my girlfriend and best friend to see it. Terrible way to spend $28 bucks when you are a poor student].
And AvP, AvP:R, and all that extended universe crap? GONE.

Star Beast of CthulhuMay 27, 2012
Insurrection was Giger's title for Resurrection because they took the credit for the xenomorph away from him and gave it to themselves.
That aside, it was a horrible movie IMO anyway. I always felt that Alien-Alien 3 were the only reasonable storylines that related to another. I don't even know why Sigourney Weaver had anything to do with Resurrection.

Supposedly it's only Alien and Aliens. But there seem to be a few potential references, or at least Easter eggs, to Alien3 and Resurrection too, from the trailers. And if it is true that Cuddles impregnates people using tentacles, that could even refer to AvP:Requiem (the only genuinely scary scene, when the Pretorian xeno directly impregnates pregnant woman in hospital... ok the scene was not quite as scary because of course they botched it, but it had potential, unlike just about everything else in that movie).

Alien was the introduction...So i can't bash it. But Alien 3? Storyline? WHA?
If you call ONE Alien (once again...) going around an environment, killing people a STORY...Then, well... Damn. People are forgetting what movies are about.
Which is why Prometheus will be a better movie than Alien ever could have been. Yes. I said it. I don't care. Pfft...

Constealltion88May 27, 2012
I think that the only thing you can take away from Alien 3 would be the DNA reflex that was started in that movie. Scrap the rest. Keep all of ALIENS in tact c'ept the Queen (sad face). The comics are some of my favortie ALIENS stories and in good respect many of them could be their own movies, with proper direction of course, but more than likely hold no canon to what we will see in Prometheus
Just sayin'
ShaneMay 27, 2012
I'd rather see one alien then an army of them in a thinly veiled remake for the Rambo generation. I hate the Queen/Warrior thing. Far less interesting to me then the reproduction idea cut out of the first movie.
I had no idea that was Giger's name either. Thanks for that info. I barely remember that movie.
Also, that scene in AvP:R was one of the worst in movie history, nice way to alienate the female audience. Just terrible.

@Constellation88
I also used to think the DNA reflex thing was Alien3. But it turns out it was invented by Cameron as part of the Aliens back story, the idea that the xeno is an undifferentiated parasite which then incorporates some of the host's properties, only they did not get around to using it till Alien3.

Star Beast of CthulhuMay 27, 2012
The original line of Aliens toys had genetic variations of the Xenomorph; Scorpion, Gorilla, Snake, etc.
wesenMay 27, 2012
@Shane I agree. I only rcently rewatched Alien and Aliens. After I read that many people considered it the best sequel ever, even surpassing the original I was thoroughly desappointed.

@wesen
I loved "Aliens" as a child but, when hearing of the Alien Prequel going into production i sat down to watch it.
And turned it off. It lacked any character the first one had.
