The Shock Factor...

Sorry if someones already covered this, but something that popped in my head today is, will Prometheus have that same shock factor as Alien? Although I didn't see Alien when it was released in 1979 (as discussed in another discussion), it is often talked about how much Alien terrified the audience. Ridley Scott recalled how in a test screening, a young couple were wrapped around each other in sheer terror. It was so unlike anything before it, so it was so effective in the scare department. So I was wondering, in the modern age would Prometheus have that same effect? Ridley has said (& I quote) he want's to "scare the living sh*t out of you", & being one of the best (if not the best) directors, I'm sure he knows what he is doing and what buttons to press. & he has promised at least one moment in the film to rival he legendary chestburster scene. But what with all the images & and promo vids floating about showing more & more of the film, the 15 rating as opposed to Alien's 18, and the fact that since Alien we've had so many films to shock us (all the "Saw"s and such like), will it terrify us as Alien did? Not that its all about the gore, indeed Alien was so terrifying because you rarely saw the monster but you knew it was there. But I wonder if we are a bit anaethnatised to it all these days. Personally I think from what I've sen theres enough in there to scare the bejeezus out of us, plus Mr Scott won't have let all the shocks & scares out of the bag at this stage. But I just thought I'd see what others thought..

at this point, to really shock a filmgoer is almost mission impossible folks are nowhere near as naive as they used to be, the 1970's saw great films that truly shocked like "The Exorcist", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", "Jaws" and of course "ALIEN" i think due to the fact that they were all pre-internet i feel i have seen WAY TOO MUCH imagery that would have left me gobb-smacked had i not seen it already in the trailers that i have now well scrutinized not to say that there may be some shockable moments i have yet to see for myself when i finally do see it next week in all honesty, i doubt i will be shocked the way i was when i first saw the facehugger / chest-burster scene but, it sure would be great for me to eat these words on June 8th

I think the shock factor will be and will remain in my dreams the temples scenes with the cobra-xeno. it goes in your suit, down your throat around your neck and you can't touch it!! that sucks!! lol and seriously scarier then anything i can possibly think of! the SJ from the clip just reminds me of running away from Jason, the giant squid-hugger might be freaky to look at, and the whole idea of the infected crew coming up the stairs while you blowtorch them...priceless For me the scariest moment of Alien is the Egg opening, and still is, i still find myself covering my eyes a bit getting ready for the jump, so in the same way i think that snake alien will do it for me. something about those sort of creatures is so primal, that is scares the living S#$% out of you every time. I am way to excited now and need to actually get work done!!

It cannot have the same shock factor as Alien simply because we have already seen Alien. Shock implies you are seeing something you haven't seen before and it surprises you that much. We have already seen a variation on the whole "things going down people's throats and Aliens incubating inside humans" thing. It might still send shivers down your spine though, so that's something.

Even though we have seen so much pre-release stuff, I am pretty sure its still going have the intended effect on me. I can't wait to see what RS is going to do to mind fuck us like he did in Alien. In Alien the scene with the egg was so real and freaky. How the anbient light showed this thing moving around and getting itself into position was amazing. You new something was going to happen but I never suspected a face hugger. Man that was so real. I think we are going to see some pretty imaginative creatures on the screen next week and enough to make you squirm in your seat.

But Prometheus doesnt have Alien in so therefore it can provide shock factor on its own level. However, I doubt it will really shock just disturb or be intense

I doubt it will, when Alien was released nothing like Alien was ever seen by an audience, the whole premise of Alien is terrifying. But I feel, not to today's audience. We've become harder to scare. There are the odd exception, Blair Witch Project is a good example, The Shining, The Ring. Maybe it will be as scary, it's partly up to us also, we have to kinda psyche ourself's up a bit and get that initial Cinema experience flowing.

I just hope there's more visually scary stuff in the film than already shown in the trailers, I wont read the revealed plot or anything for that simple reason.

I am not looking for shock as much as intensity and awe with a good story line to follow. I agree the movie scenes released has taken a lot of surprise out of it and that release of so much may be the curse for this movie. I would like to have a chat with the promotion folks about their aggressiveness on this movie. Alien was a simple campaign and what was best about – “In space no one can here you scream”. I know this is not Alien movie but it is a RS movie so my expectations are high. Let’s just hope I am not setting myself up for disappointment.

Yeah, I agree dopelganger about taking the surprise away. there's a worry of overkill with advance snippets in the past few weeks. When the first trailer was released in December, it produced such a clamour for info, it was great marketing. But as we've got into the last month, I worry they have gone too far the other way and shown too much. Something like the cobrahugger and the entry into that blokes mouth I'd rather have seen that when I saw the movie than in adverts. But hey, I went googling for it so it's my own fault!!! Lol But I could be wrong and there's tons more in store, I hope so. & yeah the story is the key. When I say shocks, I dont mean gory stuff necessarily, just moments that make you go 'oh my god, did that just happen??', like the facehugger and chestburster did in Alien.

Well I dont think I have anything intelligible to add to this discusssion. I just bet on my gutfeeling. Ok it´s internet world and the 70´s great porno-horror-chique cinematography is dead. But I still hold in my memories: from 1998 ( I was 21), the shocking 30 minutes start of "Saving private Ryan", from 2001, the almost realness of evilness of "Hannibal" that made leave the theatre like a spooked kid that believed the Devil was real, and the more recent sci-fi movie "Avatar" which is a proof that the internet can´t spoil a movie, I saw it with my brother and when he asked about the movie, I just said "- It seems like it´s the first time I went to a cinema". Well I guess this is all about how great directors can still grab you with the their magic. And yes I still belive in the shock experience, I think is simply about how great directors can make the whole experince seems real. (pardon my english, it´s not my native language)
