awryty all.. why are people reading into the reviews to much? i seen one saying that the 1st official trailer gives to much away. there isnt much of a story, blah blah blah... Look at the box office in the past cuppo of year utter balls john carter battleship. transformers. spiderman etc all let downs. we all need to chill out see this movie then digest it, i guarantee this movie will be a masterpiece, ALIEN bad reviews! blade runner floped at the box office then turnd into one of the best films ever made. my theory is RS movies are way before there time and it takes time for people to catch up with them....... 2 more days for me i have read the reviews and spoilers and i for one still can not wate

Sometimes, the anticipation is more enjoyable than the event itself. I certainly hope that's not the case this time, for me anyway. Reading all the reviews from critics as well from fans is just part of the experience, so take it all in and enjoy!

I couldn't agree more. Though my hopes are still very high, in the end it has been the ride up to this day that I have enjoyed most, the anticipation, the discussion, the chance to relate to other fans all over the world. That alone is rewarding enough. And if the movie doesn't deliver, then it will be fun to come back on the forum and whine for the time being!
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born. Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

Always remember a review is usually a biased opinion, its perfectly fine to take in and grasp another's views but that doesnt mean that the result of the film is set in stone. I dislike the way people will judge a film entirely on a review and generate a kind of poisoned view point (its why reviews can be potentially terrible - they can make you generate pre-ordained criticism before you watch it). @seanb1986 - I hear you dude Im glad you still have unbiased optimism and genuine excitement as some people have read the reviews and have started dumbing down the film, an I have said this earlier today reading something is entirely different to seeing something and I would like to think Prometheus is a film you need to see rather than read. (it probably sounds kinda off on paper I reckon)

Agreed, and since when do American audiences respond to critics? None of the alien films had a good stories but the first two where verry well done and as a result became almost instant clasics. Pluss keep in mind the reviews although mixed are mostly possitive. Allot the fans that frequent these sites are fans of the whole avp stuff and the critics took a giant dump on both of those, righfully so i might add. The originall reviews of starwars where mixed at best and we all know how succesfull that turned out.

I've been silently asking myself the exact same question. I haven't read any reviews, and I won't - but you obviously highlight that audiences and tastes have, "changed". In that light, controversy in how this film is perceived or understood could be a very good sign? I'm not drawing any parallel to 2001: A Space Odyssey, I'm just using it as an example - but, if that film were released, as if never before seen, tomorrow, would it's reception by this weekend be any different than it was in 1968?.. "A crashing bore”, [Newsweek]; “morally pretentious, intellectually obscure, and inordinately long",[Agel]; “trash masquerading as art", “monumentally unimaginative”, “the biggest amateur movie of them all", [The New Yorker]... 2001: A Space Odyssey had to shape perceptions, to fit it - luckily it was strong enough to do that. I'm personally not very comfortable with calling people morons and such, (as I've seen, elsewhere0, just because they don't fully appreciate a film, necessarily - nor with assuming that this is, somehow, a fans film that only the True Fan will appreciate - [if only "the fans", went to see it, it might very soon be removed from Picture Houses]. Yes, those who dismiss it may well be morons; or, it could equally be the case that the film is legitimate garbage - or, they may just not understand it because most films of this type are now specifically designed to fit a certain denominator, [as you've pointed out so well], a denominator that Prometheus may not fit - and will therefore an audience will need a little time to "get it" - and a Studio will need some nerve. As a result, personally, I am finding the controversy I sense already encouraging, from a selfish point of view... It remains to be seen whether Fox, (if they have produced a film that, contrary to what the market necessitates, requires a little time - in that old-fashioned, old-Hollywood way), are prepared to maintain that position - and stand behind the film if audiences need time to catch up or adjust - in the way Studios used to stand behind films without necessarily panicking because someone gave it a bad review....times are very different, and very hard, now: that luxury may be history. I suppose it depends on what balance they have, regardless of what they say, really decided on between Money and Ideas, or whether that balance is actually any different at all from what the current market dictates and what it would be normally. To me, this makes the situation seem very interesting - and I'm now more curious than ever to see what the cause of it is and not judge, either way, until I have. This film may be, "challenging" - in which case it's already a declaration of faith that it even got made, at this budget - and the question then becomes, just how strong is that faith? Or, this film may just not be very good. I think that is quite unlikely - but it's possible: and it's equally possible that those who are dissatisfied are not necessarily declaring themselves to be damned imbeciles by the fact of their dissatisfaction - the point is, I agree: I wouldn't want come to a conclusion on any of it, one way or the other - until I've seen what they've seen.

I think it has to do with the hype, at some point the thing that was hyped for so long is revealed and people have to process this information (especially if it is initially negative) in such a way that lets them come to terms with the fact that their personal anticipation and hype was overblown. They are trying to bring their appraisals in line with what is realistically possible and this creates negative affect which causes irritation and the need to discuss the less-than-stellar aspects of the hyped thing in a pessimistic way. If the film is genuinely good I am sure we will see a surge of positive reviews on these boards over this weekend.

Im not expecting to find all the answeres to those questions but do expect to find out a liitle more about what "big guy in the chair" was. Not so much as to how he got there or why, but simply wtf was he/she/it.

@Drakeequation Are you basically saying that people's overhyped anticipations have blown up in some of their faces as it is in fact (in their opinion) not as groundbreaking as its initial premise?

@Drakeequation A subconscious, "return to the Mean"?.. I think there may well be something in that.

I think the hype is frankly our fault and not that of the studio. I read severall articles that talk about the marketing campain being over the top but if you look at he amount of trailers and tv spots for the avengers its about the same. Allot ofthe trailers and tv spots were pretty much the same, just eddited mostly for time.

@Twitch- I agree, not overhyped at all by FOX. It's just that after more than 30 years and a boatload of sequels, fans are hyperventilating at the prospect of a return to greatness.

I de-avatar-ed the thread. Thank-you to those that pointed out the unintentional change in topic and the need to keep these threads light and fun. Back on topic....

people are saying that the cast dont get used enough there back storys etc well all we really need to do is watch the viral trailers that is out there that i am sure most of us have done. so we get a idea of the casts storys RS and fox didnt have to do this and i for one am glad they did.. Anyway i think we will be talking about this movie for a long time maybe the reviews missed little bits or just didn't understand the movie. Im not saying they are stupid, I didnt get vanilla sky or inception when i 1st seen them, And i would have been easy to review them as no very good films, but with a second watch both they films in my eyes are amazing. The viewer has to use there brain to get the film, and i can see that happing for Prometheus. this is going to be a classic 30 years time if you guys are still on this plaint will say to your kids grandchildren i seen prometheus on the big screen in 3d and it was outstanding. keep a open mind guys dont let the negative review put you off

I am going into this movie completely aware of how the story goes based on what's been said so far. I'm still excited. I still can't wait to form my own opinions based on my experience of how the story will be executed. @Twitch Where in TX? I'm out in San Antonio myself.

Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

I agree, the reviews are simply reviews. Another person's opinion. Opinions are like noses. Everyone has one. I personally never base my decision to go see a movie (or buy a video game) based on another person's review. In some cases, they are were spot on and I pay the consequences.

Sean, just because you or someone else might think some movie is the greatest movie of all time, it isn't true for everyone, take Blade Runner, I never have liked the movie and never will, I've tried to see what others see, but it's just not there for me. What I am saying is, it's all highly subjective, what you like might not be what I like and what we like might not be liked by the majority. That's just the way it is. I think that's the bottom line. Myself, I am hoping this movie will tie up loose ends and bring us to Alien with answers to who was the Space Jockey they discovered in Alien and how did he come to be there with a big hole in his chest. If the continuity between old and new is not there and it doesn't give me those answers then I will not be happy with Prometheus in that respect, but it could still be a great scifi movie.
