In some versions of the Greek legend of Prometheus, Zeus doesn't punish only Prometheus for his theft of fire. He also punishes humankind — by sending them Pandora. Besides opening up a jar containing all the evils of the world — famine, disease, etc. — Pandora is the first woman, which in the myth is related as a terrible punishment in and of itself because women are (to the misogynist Greeks) nothin' but trouble. Anyway, keeping all that in mind, could it be meaningful that the only Engineers we've seen, so far, seem to be...male-ish? And if they really are all male or unisex or no-sex, whatever, what does that say about their own life cycle, and how their efforts at bio-engineering might be different from human's efforts?

They do seem clearly MALE. If we were created in their image, presumably they were at one point, if not still, "male and female." For me the guesses change depending on how long they live. If their society perfected "the fountain of youth" and they are 'eternal' (for all practical purposes) then they'd likely have had to abandon the vast majority of reproduction. Otherwise they'd end up with an overpopulation crisis pretty quickly. In 1,000 Earth years or so, (with no one dying) things would be quite out of hand. So, my main question is, "Are these the last few of their ENTIRE civilization?" Eventually, if reproduction has stopped this will happen. "Eternal" life leads to chronic boredom (typically in most SF in which the entities remain corporeal) and individuals then start committing suicide (actively or passively). Extinction becomes inevitable. It seems that it *could* be plausible in this fictional context that the last female died 100,000 Earth years ago and this one living guy is the only "pure" one left. I hope that the film will surprise me and hint at something that will be explained further in "'Prometheus' II". I seriously doubt that will be called "Pandora" however—due to Avatar. Perhaps the urns in this film are representative of "Pandora's Box." Shaw might be their "female future" ???

Consider that in the book of Enki the person who "created" the adam was Ninurta the wife of EA/Enki. It was she who said "my hands have made it" An interesting article about using DNA as a memory technology. http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/rethinking-healthcare/dna-as-rewritable-digital-data-storage/8915 What might be the consequences of this knowledge? Pandora's box indeed.

Thought-provoking comments. Thanks for weighing in @sukkal and @Jason8. I have not seen Avatar so I missed the Pandora reference there.
