Note: This review has been marked "spoiler-free". Any spoilers posted will be removed (the entire post). -----------------------------------------------------------------The problem with building a film up the way that Fox has done, is that it sets it up for a fall. However, I think most of you guys are being WAY too harsh on the movie. Sure, there are some negative aspects to the film, but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed it. Visually stunning, provacative, suggestive, thought-inspiring ... and some of the scenes are very well done. I also don't buy into the "none of the questions are answered so it's shit" comments. Some questions are answered and some are left open - but I, in no way, felt cheated when I left the cinema. Anyway, if all the questions were answered, then what would the point of a sequel be? I think it is the kind of film that needs to be seen a few times to fully absorb it I came away thinking "that was a great film that could have been made better in certain ways". To all those who haven't seen it - don't lose faith, keep an open mind and you might just be pleasnatly surprised! Andy

A GOOD writer would have answered the questions fans have had for years about Alien and then created more questions about Prometheus at the end for people to wonder about until a sequel is released.

I got my Imax tickets for the whole family. Thanks for the positive post. Its not Alien, never expected it to be. No one else should have either. But I bet all the folks trashing the movie buy the Blu-ray the first week its out.

Right on Cypher! Andy, you wouldn't happen to be a Fox employee would you? I'm not trying to be a smart @$$ its just that if I were a Fox employee, I'd be on every fan board saying exactly what you just said. A film doesn't have to be as incredible or as important to film history as Alien to be considered a good film. Not every film RS has directed has been amazing. Lesser films have been very worthwhile, it just that this was a really dangerous place to go for Fox and RS if everyone wasn't "all in." They could've more easily made a COMPLETELY original film without touching Alien at all. I was getting really geared up for this film as I'm a huge fan of Alien, but not so much of its sequels. I'm sad to hear from so many avid Alien fans that this movie is a let-down.

The impression I keep getting from these Luke-warm to negative reviews is that hard core Alien fans were expecting more of an Alien tie-in. Ridley said long ago it was the same universe, same DNA (which BTW was a great inside joke.). But NOT an Alien sequel. I'm perfectly fine with seeing Prometheus for what it is, and not seeing it as "Alien 5" or "Alien 0". FYI: I consider myself fairly die-hard since I've made and have an original warrior alien, queen alien, and (half of a) 8 ft. SJ costume sitting in my living room. My only real concern is the editing I've seen in those 4 new scenes that are out. (I can't see the actual movie until it hits the US next Thurs.). But if those scenes are pulled directly from the movie... I have no idea what RS is doing with his visual narrative style. They seem very choppy.

Sorry to disagree with you but a good writer would write a story that gives some hints at what the mysteries of the original film were without totally explaining them and ruining the mystique of that film. It is left open for your own interpretations. It is tiresome when people need everything spoon fed to them. The last 2 decades have bred the most impatient and scatterbrained movie goers. Every person on this board has over-speculated the entire experience into something it could never be. Blame yourselves if you find the movie doesn't meet your own expectations. Maybe now when a director says they are making a movie about something , you can make up your mind as to not write the movie before it is even finished filming so you might be able to enjoy it. My take on the reviews is this; People who wanted an "Alien" film were let down, People who wanted a good stand alone film weren't.

Why does this sound like the star war saga, where fans were let down when the newer movies came out. I am truly sorry for those that didn't care for the movie, but I feel we will all have different emotions about the movie and we should just enjoy the amazing work that Ridley Scott has presented to the world with as a whole.

You're right, this sounds an awful lot like the release of The Phantom Menace. The problem with that is that nothing can change the movie once it's out. People may (notice, I said "may") be in denial right now. Time will tell whether this movie is worth it or not.
