all the jesus/faith stuff

Also, could have done with a little less 'I choose to believe'..this type of thinking is the whole reason 'religion' is a joke, because you believe with no evidence or data..
this type of behaviour needs to be ridiculed as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens once too many times pointed out
It has no place in a modern civilised society

"Flying Spaghetti Monster"
@red5 have you been watching South Park?

It's a plot device, a philosophical theme designed to spark debate and allow the audience to relate to characters in their own way. 'The Grey' with Liam Neeson is a great example of this ( I think it should be classroom English text). While I agree with you, I don't think this is the right forum for anti-theistic sentiments.

so out of that entire statement I made you just picked out the nazi bit, NICE...
im not pro religion either, but i am not going to raise my blood pressure like GLS stating they should be ridiculed either, there's just far better things to do.

@GLS
I agree mate - there's no place in 2012 for Biblical bollocks & praying to an invisible man who watches us in the sky! Come on for f*ck-sake, it's the 21st Century. If I preyd to ZUES, they'd lock me up - What's the difference between Zues & the Biblical God... ??? F**k all...
BUT this is very common in US Films... Too much Jesus talk.
@westy Why isn't this the forum... I find religion offensive & the whole thing needs to be brought down... This film deals with big themes, so why not discuss on here. I and many of my dear friends are at war with this way of life... (In the words of Hitch)
People that prey are borderline mentalists! Why bother preying? GOD has a plan "Thy will be done"
More HITCHIN less BITCHIN

its a sci fiction movie. if you think religion should be mocked go to dawkins or hitchens website. what do you want everyone in the movie to start mocking every notion of religious beleif or custom?
i think RS raises enough in this movie to spark debate. Whether you want to accept it or not - DNA forming By itself, and rather life forming from lifeless matter is something which even dawkins nor hitchens could explain with facts or data.
this film explores other possibilities, but i think it will be the sequel that makes it or breaks it.
June 02, 2012
It's just a science fiction movie ... not the meaning of life and this kind of discuciones "science vs. religion" are a rehash in this forum...
June 02, 2012
It was all just a "Faith" device, no one comes across as preachy... at the end of the day I didn't feel "Converted". To say it has no place in the future is akin to stating why did Dallas listen to Mozart in Alien... People like what they like and it gives a character depth!
Religion has its place and @GLS if the film "I Am Legend" was to preachy or used faith" as a solution you should read the book... very dark, very old and veeeerrryyy good! Vampires instead of infected folks (I HATE VAMPIRES I THINK ITS A COP-OUT, AND IT WAS BEFORE ALL THE MODERN PAP ABOUT VAMPS - i MEAN TWILIGHT A GIRL WHO chooses between a Werewolf and a vamp - beastaphilia or necraphiphilia (did no-one see that?)).

@red5...lol a sequel
anyway moving on, yes discuss it all you want, it is central to the theme I guess..BUT
It just put me off Shaw..didn't like her at all because of it. And the necklace with the crucifix? Please..any more cliches packed into this movie and it's going to burst at the seams..well it did
The religious theme wasnt even explored well..it starts running along with one idea and then abandons it like a bored child with no conclusion
How is this Lindelof guy credible anyway? He just comes up with weird ideas but sure as hell cant finish something
June 02, 2012
GLS exactly who are YOU to say what should or should not be discussed or talked about in 21st century...i thought you believed in free speech buddy, often that comes with things you disagree with. People still use fire to cook meals as weve done for past thousands of years, should we stop doing it because we are in the 21st century and all civilized, ??
Your logic shows more of your absolute contempt for other peoples views that disagree with your own. Unfortunately you are turning into the thing which you have accused religion of, bigotry.
Im not a christian or a member of any religion.
June 02, 2012
lawrence krauss the physcists came up with something quite interesting "forget jesus, the stars died so we can all live" or something like that.... this film says forget jesus the engineer died so we can all exist.
i thnik thats the idea behind the crucifix
June 02, 2012
@itsjeremy people who believe in God should be ridiculed..end of..speak freely all u want
the same way I would be ridiculed if I said I believe in fairies...I have faith there are fairies out there..same thing
I believe in proven things, that the earth is round and 6 billion years old
take your jesus and burning bush and walking on water elsewhere please, thank you

"To demean someone else's believe is to ridicule your own standing"
What anyone believes is their own thing (myself included). The whole crucifix thing in Prometheus is a symbol that most in the western world recognize, it was "grounding" for the character and had little to do with what the audience thought... IT WAS JUST A SYMBOL that based the character and gave her a reason why she strove and something to question... all with religious belief have that Faith at their core, and to question that is to show someone lost, confused and scared!
Imagine if everything you believed was proved wrong...
"They proved on television last night
God was just a lie
He never made the world at all
It was just some sweet old-fashioned race
So melt down all the ornaments
Move out all the graves
And let us build the disco that we need
For our young 'braves'.
Pull it down, drag it down
Drag it down, pull it down
Till the hopes and dreams of all
The ages past are shattered on the ground.
We think we are so clever
Killing heroes, killing magic
Till everything that's sacred
Is brought down to our level
For mammon is a jealous master
Leaves no room for any other
All the questions left unanswered
All the answers gone forever
So bow to the woman in the finest fur
Bow to the man with the ace street cool
Bow to the woman with all the power
Bow to the man with all the money
In whose sight are we equal now?
In whose sight are we equal now?
In whose sight are we equal now?
In whose sight are we equal now?
Now that we've killed god"

GLS..my my...such hate, venom, i wonder if thats how the stalin, pot pot era communists and nazis started out against the christians and jews, hate first then violence, hrmm oh well anyway...Hey if some one wants to believe in faires and witch craft, vampires let them. Its not bothering me, Alot of things that we once thought crazy...like man flying was around even before the math was around to confirm and prove it. it was only after the advent of the wright brothers flight did the math explain why it was possible, however if i went by your examples we should have ridiculed the wright brothers attempting to do something which many believed was stupid/impossible and had never existed before, i should state i am my self, an engineer (civil not a space jockey one)
June 02, 2012
You cannot HINT at someone being akin to a Nazi mate... that's out of order...
I have no problem with religions like Islam personally - I only have pity really... I have no problem with this "Peace" loving religion - as long as they don't want to kill me when I draw a cartoon mocking their God...
I also love the catholic church and its amazing record with looking after children...
"Religion makes good men do bad things..."
June 02, 2012
Really? You're ridiculing the movie for an artistic idea that concurs with your beliefs? Tell me, are you one of those people that calls the story "terrible"? Because it is actually far from terrible.
June 02, 2012
Everyone believes their belief and those that preach are different (anti-faith statements can be preached too)... to not give belief as much room for "Maybe" as the fantasy of a space ship (let alone one that goes faster than light) is ridiculous. Next it's gonna be a witct-hunt for Santa...

GLS, why should they be ridiculed? everyone has their evidence, it just happens some is much stronger than others.
there have been plenty of reasons to look for an uncreated being that caused everything to 'begin' or exist in the first place.
by ridiculing all beleifs that dont have scientific backing itself is closing the door on the ultimate truth. given that science is a truth fact at a given time, which then later becomes something that is proved false as our understanding increases.
should we mock scientists of earlier ages because they beleived the earth was flat?
or those who took a geocentric approach when explaing earths position in the universe?
going back to krauss, there is a quote from him even suggesting recent data from WMAP suggests we (the eliptical plane of the earth in the solar system) - truly is the centre of the universe. So why mock beleifs that you dont understand yourself. the beleifs have origin in reason - in most cases. for most people who beleive the idea that scientist seem to be pushing that everything came from nothing is difficult to accept - when our intuition tells us nothing comes from nothing. and the other matter that this film explores - the orgin of life - scientist dont have evidance f abiogenesis but generally accept life came from lifeless matter.
for many people to say the complexitites of DNA arrived by chance in an ancient soup by itself - from lifeless matter - is as good as beleiving in faries or flying sphagetti monsters or anything else. 'god did it' is a more rational explanation for the origins of life for those people.

Hi RH,
I've not had the pleasure of reading any of Hitchens rants, but I have watched him on Real Time with Bill Maher, and a few videos, and i don't think I ever saw him make any sense. he, and Maher, and Dawkins, attack a strawman. Not real religion. Just as people attacking athiests bring up the terrible atorcities of the athiests like nazism and communism, it could be argued capitalism too. Stack up the numbers of deaths for those three so far, and then match them up against the crusades and the spanish inquisition and so on.
It always strikes me as curious that otherwise intelligent men switch off their critical faculties when it comes to attacking the religious (i myself am not religious, but have read extensively about them because i wanted to understand what they were about fisthand). Paedophiles probably join any institution where children are likely to be, childrens homes and schools all have records of child abuse, so I guess you'd like to do away with education too? Is that a fair question, it's in the same spirit as a number of your own comments.
The way i see the so called holy books is a record of how a more primitive society explained there relationship to somethig they felt. they felt a connection to something and called it god. Peole asked questions about how things started and what seemed most plausible got written down....
Have a look at which culture on earth has produced the most physicists that have changed our lives and understanding of the world and the universe. They're jewish. Some were athiests, some where believers, all had the same kind of myths around them at a young age. there are significant differences in how jews and all christians interpret the old testament.
there are many great books out there that dissect all this, without the rabid ranting of fuckwits like Hitchen and Dawkins. RS refers to a quantum physicist who is religious but didn't name him. His name is John Polkinghorne. he was a professor of quantum physics at cambridge university for years, and when he retired from that post became the university chaplain. I always found it utterly hypocritical and pathetic that dawkins, who knows him well, won't ever appear on TV interviewing Polkinghorne, because he knows the guy is more intelligent and will make him look an utter twat.
