Those of you who have seen the movie don't ruin this for me but here is what I am doing to prepare for watching Prometheus on the big screen next weekend and why.
First of the title of the movie and Ridley Scott has made reference about a greek mythilogical figure named Prometheus and that he gave man fire and was punished for it….blah blah blah. There is so much more to the story of Prometheus than this. There are four tales in which Prometheus is involved in. Hesiod, Prometheus Bound and Prometheus Unbound and Prometheus the fire bringer.
“Hesiod also expands upon the Theogony's story of the first woman, now explicitly called Pandora ("all gifts"). After Prometheus' theft of fire, Zeus sent Pandora in retaliation. Despite Prometheus' warning, Epimetheus accepted this "gift" from the gods. Pandora carried a jar with her, from which were released (91–92) "evils, harsh pain and troublesome diseases which give men death".” (Wikipedia)
Could this be the containers we see with the black ooze in it?
“In addition to giving humankind fire, Prometheus claims to have taught them the arts of civilization, such as writing, mathematics, agriculture, medicine, and science. The Titan's greatest benefaction for humankind seems to have been saving them from complete destruction. In an apparent twist on the myth of the so-called Five Ages of Man found in Hesiod's Works and Days (wherein Cronus and, later, Zeus created and destroyed five successive races of mortal men), Prometheus asserts that Zeus had wanted to obliterate the human race, but that he somehow stopped him.” (Wikipedia)
Scott states how long man has been on earth, how old the earth is, and asks what happened before recorded history? Maybe it’s just coincidence but in the previews you see five spheres on the cave wall. When Prometheus is landing you see five citadels. Could each citadel represent the forces used to destroy or create the five successive races of mortal men?
These are the first references I noticed in the previews. So what I am doing is reading each of the tales of Prometheus and reading the summary of the books on Spark notes. I don’t expect the film to really have much more to do with alien than the Derelict ship and crew, Weyland Corp, and Ridley Scott. What I do expect to look for is hints and references during the chaos that might tie the engineers somehow into Greek mythology and who those characters are may be answered in the next movie. But I don’t expect to be told these references as I believe Ridley Scott has already given out the hint and that we must watch for and interpret those clues on our own.
I think Ridley Scott is well aware of the use of the Golden Rectangle in art. This is a sense when you look at a portrait your eyes follow where the artist wants you to go to draw your conclusion. However, it is easy to be focused in the path and not step back and look at the whole picture as to what the artist is actually saying. This can happen both, visually, verbally and in print. I think is where some may find the movie pointless in their scathing reviews. I could be wrong and I mean no insult to those who watched it and hated it. But I think the story has much more behind it than what is in focus.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 3:26 AMPrometheus is the name of the ship. It is also a reference to mythology, but that is where it ends. The garbage myth-ridden fantasy-script you're thinking of is not anything that a writer worth his salt would write, and you won't find many parallels with Greek mythology in Prometheus. You're thinking too much. Think like a writer.
