AdminEngineerJun-02-2012 10:39 PMThat line from Prometheus where Vickers confronts David and asks "What did He say?" and David replies "He says.. Try Harder"
This is the result of a scene which was never shot in Prometheus, where David delves into Weyland's dream and meets with Weyland and says "All the Engineers are dead, mission failure" and Weyland replies with "Try Harder".
This is taken from a recent interview with Ridley Scott, Damon Lindelof and slashgear recently. Below is an excerpt from the interview where Damon clarifies this for us.
" Right, so, originally in the draft there’s a scene in the movie where we see David and he’s got his headset on and he’s talking to someone, and we don’t know who it is, and he gets confronted by Vickers. There’s a scene in the script that we decided not to shoot, where we see the inside of that dream, and basically David takes a jetski out with a beautiful woman in a bikini, to a yacht, and on the yacht is Weyland. Played by Guy, without old-age make-up: this is his dream. And they have a scene together, and in that scene David says “the engineers are dead, they’re all gone, mission failure” and Weyland says “go back and try harder.” And we rewrote it so that we were going to play Weyland’s identify closed, give the audience a sense that [David] was talking to someone on the ship but not view them.
But we had already shot the scenes with Guy in the old-age make-up. So we were, like, people are going to wonder why we cast Guy Pearce to play an old man, unless we represent him as Guy Pearce. And that basically tapped into a piece of viral we had already been talking about, which is… I said it would be really cool to introduce the title of the movie – because people were asking “Prometheus, what is that?”, “how does the myth have context in the context of this movie?” So I was, like, we should write this TED talk, and then Ridley basically handed it off to Luke, his son, who is an incredible director, and we got together with TED – this guy Tom Rielly over at TED – we called him up and said “can we use your branding?” because if we can’t call it a TED talk we’ll have to call it a “FRED talk” or something, and everyone will know, it’ll cheapen it." - Damon Lindelof

MemberOvomorphJun-02-2012 10:47 PMWow that actually makes a lot of sense! I was wondering about that scene ever since I saw the clip that has been circulating the internet. Maybe it is for the best that they didn't film it though, it reminds me a bit too much of Inception.

AdminEngineerJun-02-2012 11:10 PMI especially like this quote, also from Damon:
"The ultimate goal of Prometheus, usually prequels, or movies that precede the original, close down the universe – so now we know everything we needed to know about Anakin Skywaker – we wanted Prometheus to open up the universe, so it’s not a prequel at all. It has two children, one of those children grows up to be Alien, and the other child is hopefully growing up in this other direction and, god willing, will grow up into an entirely different line of films." - Damon Lindelof

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 12:16 AMutter bollocks. You see David conversing with Weyland via headset anyway. Then Vickers confronts him. And David does indeed 'try harder' by contaminating Holloway, but only after a somewhat dubious clarification from Holloway that he is willing to do it. Looking back it is actually a fascinating insight into David and his 'ethics'.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 12:58 AMIt really peeves me that we need "featurettes" from the web to better understand a film. How about we make the film give the answers and build featurettes around that as teasers?

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:10 AMI can't wait to see the DVD and Blu ray versions of Prometheus - hope all the virals are on it too - and deleted scenes.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 1:41 PMI agree with Fury, it was obvious from the file David way talking to Weyland and especially when Vicky asked him about it. She obviously didn't like the relationship they had given he wasn't human and was closer to her father than she was.

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:53 AMBut...are we seriously supposed to believe that Wayland funded this whole thing out of "faith"? that he could just turn up to some planet and find a magic elixir of life? It's ludicrous. Try harder what?!

MemberOvomorphNov-06-2012 7:25 AMIn our movie we see David having a conversation with someone who Vickers presumes was Weyland,
What was not clear to me was not that David didn't fully answer Vickers question about 'What did he say'.
'Try Harder',,is so consise that the two words were carefully chosen by David,,,but much more had been discussed, Vickers,,didn;t press the point enough to my satisfaction..and should have demanded more details,
If she accepted David's replay at face value she didn't try harder to find what was really going on in those pyramids by instructing others to do greater research on the moon's landscape example.
In fact if she was a cold blooded non-emotional Corporate owner type she should target this moon for Weyland Corp. development..and send more employees to start terra forming.
After all there are several atmosphere generating pyramids ready for human occupation.
