Theory on Prometheus Sequel

Hey gang, I was at a screening of Prometheus Thursday for film critics and a group who saw it had a discussion afterwards about where the movie goes from here. According to one insider, who says he knew a person involved in the film's making, there was originally a plot point for Prometheus that dealt with one of the Engineers being a scout who was sent to Earth 2,000 years ago...Jesus Christ. (If you'll remember, for those who saw the film, they carbon date one of the Engineers and it was 2,000 years ago when it died.) Essentially, human beings turned on the Engineer and killed him, and so the other Engineers decided that Earth needed to be destroyed, sort of how a scientist would put down an animal if it attacked a co-worker. Their motivation is somewhat vengeful, a punishment from our Creator if you will. So this could be part of what we see in the sequel, with Shaw having to find a way to convince the Engineers we are worthy of existing. If so, what do you think of the idea? I had a friend say it was total sacrilege, but to me it's a bold idea worth exploring. What would you like to see happen in the sequel?

I think part of the problem is that we have inculcated a belief that religious beliefs should be respected. One should never respect stupidity.

I personally would really like to see the Engineers history explored a bit more in a sequel. It sounds like a lot has already happened to their civilization before the crew of the Promotheus even sets foot on their alien outpost.

I agree. The next one needs to explore the engineers back story. My thoughts in this post here. Personally, I would hate to see some tie in with christ. It would turn the whole franchise into a complete farce.

That would be utterly utterly lame. 'Was God an astronaut?' indeed (to quote the old fraudster Van Daniken). At a time when we see more and more clearly the literary and constructed nature of the Jesus Myth, when we see (for the second time in a hundred years) the failure of the quest for a historical Jesus, and when awareness of the psychological, cultural and indeed evolutionary nature of religion is available to anyone willing to read and question, we can see a number of reactions. One is the resurgence of fundamentalist belief that rejects science and history and retreats into its own assertions. Another is the appropriation of the Christian myth into new forms - Jesus the Astronaut, Jesus the new age ascended master, Jesus in Americay, Jesus has married a Korean Moonie - to meet the demands of the spiritual supermarket. It's a death rattle of Enlightenment thinking. With increasing secularisation, filmakers seem more willing to explore these once-taboo areas. But there's always a cost. Peoples' religious beliefs are important, and should be respected. Controversy affects box office. And Fox is firmly tied to the reactionary Right of the US population. But most important, the Prometheus arc is so utterly banal that an attempt to present any such idea 'seriously' would be howled down by universal laughter. 'An alien squid ate my boyfriend' is not a vehicle for philosophical or religious speculation. Unless you're South Park. :)

there was NONE of that 2,000 years ago 'humanity killed the (christ) messenger' in the film. nor would such a load of rubbish have helped -- the ENGINEERS were giants. GIANTS. In fact, the opening scene, as glorious as it is, just sets a scene, not THE scene. It's like a disconnected example of 'what they did', not why. We don't even know which planet it is. The sequel clearly is going to have RAPACE (and David) landing on the SAUCER PLANET. What'll happen to them there, might be 'a bit trippy' and should be wonwderful to watch, in the right hands (and I'm talking here about NOT asking Lindeloff to LOST it again). Man, I hated LOST. And some of the glaring plot holes in Prometheus were probably ALL Lindelof's fault. Scott should have said, "Lindelof, NO!" more often. Hey, but fun film, fun mindless cinema for a cold wet afternoon of DVD fun. :)

Playmaker, why did you REPOST this thread? You're diluting your audience (and the discussion) by doing such.

Good idea - although if they start going down the religious route too much they may get backlashes from religious groups.

Sequel: A road movie of sorts, with Shaw accompanied by chirpy chat from David's head. Shaw will get drunk, shoot guns, will cry and rage and fling David's annoying head at the wall, smashing up his handsome features. After Shaw passes out David will find a small puddle of black goo on the floor, lick it up and develop spidey legs ala face-hugger. He will scuttle down a vent and start plotting his return to the company with some experimental David babies, and a new hairdo. A despairing Shaw will attempt to clone a new Holloway from cells left on his ring, but each clone foetus will crumble into goo dust before her eyes. Shaw will find God again and become a nun in a floating donut monastery. David will eject himself and his new friends in a newly crafted pod, replete with flutes, egg buttons and starmaps, and the final scene will close with a jolly re-enactment of Lawrence of Arabia.

I think the ending is like the one of District 9, the story goes on but without a movie to show it.
