My opinion about Prometheus (spoiler free)

First off. I got out of the IMAX on opening night unimpressed. I enjoyed my two hours there, and I was humming the main theme of the movie on my way back home. But. I had mixed feelings in the beginning, the first disappointment came a very few minutes from the beginning. Why put this in the "Liked" section, then? I skip the visual part, as there's an overall general agreement, and I am just another drop in that sea. I put it in the "liked" part, because in the days following the show (it's been three long days), I have been thinking about it. This movie keeps me thinking about the agendas of all the characters, and how they work in the story. As an Alien fan it also keeps me thinking about the links to Alien (I don't mean the obvious links, but rather how it all fits together in that universe). That's positive for me. I hope most of the questions remain unanswered, just like the Derelict in Alien. My only gripe, the real flaw of the movie, which is the same I read in all the intelligent, objective reviews here, is that it's edited wrongly. It has nothing to do with the story, with Alien, or with thought provocation. It is not dictated by setting the bar high, by delusion of excessive expectations or seeing a plot that doesn't match one's theories. It's just a technical problem about pacing and character development. Any movie with this same flaw would disappoint me equally. Prometheus is too short, with painful cuts. In order to be great it needs at least 30-40 more minutes of build-up and between-characters dynamics. They wanted to put too much stuff in such a short time. Some scenes feel like jumping here and there without proper connection. Basically it looks like an extended trailer, where some juicy parts are missing. In the end you get the story, there's nothing unclear story wise (the unclear parts for me are the "thought-provoking" bits), but the pacing seems superficial, rushed, sometimes shallow. It's a pity, because otherwise it would be very, very good (to me). Anyway, I am going to watch it again as soon as I have a chance, but I sincerely hope that the DVD has a longer cut that does it justice. If you have ever seen those funny "30 seconds bunnies" movie synopses, that's how I felt watching Prometheus. Fun, you get it, but much more is missing. DId I like it? Yes, there's more to it than what we see on the screen. Is it a great movie? No, it's just fine. Peace
