I feel disappointed with the film, I had high hopes. My main gripes are as follows, and generally follow what alot of other people have said:
1. Cheesy script and acting. One of the great things about Alien was the very realistic, unforced and natural acting. The way the characters spoke, acted and reacted to events was so natural – to be honest it was like watching yourself on screen which is why I think it touched a nerve with so many people. Prometheus is almost the exact opposite, the characters say some really odd things at times and this makes it difficult for the audience to empathise with the crew, some characters also seem to totally change outlook and opinion from scene to scene. The acting is plain bad sometimes.
2. Random things happening that add nothing to the story – for example when the snake thing attacks Milburn he just dies. Why did they not develop that into something more – like a chest buster scene or something? It added nothing to the story.
3. Fifield – similar to the above, he just randomly turns up at the ship and begins killing people for no reason. Why? He then dies far too quickly. What really annoyed me is that he didn’t look that scary – why did they not maintain the look he had in some of the preview shots with and elongated head and arms (which poses the question why did they show us this version in the first place?). That would have been much better.
4. The caesarean scene – this was actually done ok, but I can’t believe that post op no one noticed her ‘baby’ in the room!? They could have shown it escaping or something which would have closed this scene off better (and echo’d Alien which would have been a good homage to it).
5. Creature Design – the Engineer actually looked quite good, but the Proto Alien at the end was just far too basic. The form in which it was born was totally at odds with the other Alien films.
6. The Ending – so, Shaw at the end is stranded and faces a lonely death, David then pipes up (or his head does) and says he can get her home. But, instead, like a looney she says she wants more of the Engineers?! Is that a good idea given that they did not seem that friendly? The whole David’s head in a bag thing – OMG, people were laughing at this in the cinema! The ending just seem to be totally rushed and not thought through. The Engineer also dies too quickly IMO
7. Pacing – the build up was ok, but after that the scenes seemed to jump massively missing out bits in between that would have joined up the dots. Was all over the shop.
8. Soundtrack – was very big band Star Trek and it didn’t go with the general idea of the film at all, I would rather they had just used the Alien soundtrack which was haunting. Timing was terrible at times, there were some scenes that really would have benefited from no music at all, but they over used the same 'big band' track again and again at the most inappropriate times. Really poor and ruined the mood too often.
I am not an Alien fanatic but I was born in 79 and as a result very much grew up watching the films, so I had high hopes that in terms of quality it would sit in the league of the first 3. IMO I would say it is not even as good as Resurrection, which is the 4th best IMO. That made much more of what it had to offer. It is simply not as good as Alien, Aliens or Alien 3.
In my view this film suffers from the ‘too many cooks’ syndrome. RS should have used the Alien and Aliens Production Teams (or what is left of them). They definitely need to get rid of Lindelof for the next film!
6/10 IMO.
