MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 4:55 PMSciFi Channel (which they will always be in my mind) has been showing a bunch of Alien films lately including Alien Resurrection. I have always really liked this film except for the part about Ripley's "son" with the queen, which I thought was a bit cheesy at points. But the rest of the film is visually compelling and has a biting moral comment on the willingness of the military industrial complex to regard civilians and their laws as expendable for their own ends to be achieved. The fact that the military does things far worse than Weyland-Yutani ever did is indicative. The character of the android is ironic in the extreme and raises additional moral questions as well, when the android is arguably far more moral than any human in the movie.
Just my personal perspective. Curious to see others' reactions to the film, and their rationale for those reactions.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:07 PMIn Alien, you truly cared if the crew survived or not. They were likable people. The same with Aliens. But in Resurrection, I could care less. These characters were amoral at best. I found it hard to cheer for anyone or anything in this film.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:10 PMI get where your coming from. But I felt the overall film lacked suspense and at times it was damn right just wrong and weird (the clone failures room for starters). There are always moral questions raised in the Alien films and is a defining quality about them. However, I found that Resurrection had shitty designs for the xeno's (okay yeh theyre clones sort of) but what was with the fishiness and excessive slime. They completely lost their biomechanical aesthetic and became Gigerless. Rather just slimy monsters with a dribble problem. The lack of facehuggers in the film annoyed me too (only had like two scenes). I just find the film to be well done but non-canonical in my opinion and took the series into more bizarre territory as if to compensate for the lack and boredom of Alien 3.
I used to generally enjoy Alien Resurrection but as I have gotten older I begin to look down on it more and more. But thats just me. Also I think the death of the newborn was gross indoors but sfx crap in space (its remains looked like a floating muller yoghurt in space).
To me Alien Resurrection was a 3/5 in my opinion. It was okay but nothing special and while visually quite good, easily forgettable.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:08 PMI didn't like alien resurrection movie for plenty of reasons. I hate hybrid experiments and I hated human-aliens mixture in that movie. I also failed to understand where they wanted to go with such less connected part or it was the last nail in the alien series coffin.

I concur to that, yeh i didnt particularly care about the crew of the betty, I found Call ironic as being too human as an android but ultimately irritating. Ripley just seemed distant and acting as miss know-it-all even though she was okay in it. Couldnt care less about anyone else in it.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 5:15 PMi did see it first run in the theaters back in 1997
i feel that AR had a good story, but i was the execution of it that killed
that film for me. there something a bit campy about it. in spite of all the
killing that was going on, that just left me dry. forgot about the film
within the few days after i saw it
i still watch it for the sake of nostalgia.
a good cable movie on a boring weekend is what i feel it is

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 6:30 PMResurrection was just too weird for me. With all the genetic nonsense going on, I think it kind of diluted the Alien itself. I also didn't care for the characters. Why would I care about a bunch of space pirates who sold innocent people over to the govt. for baby food? Ripley was there, but she seemed to be in her own world doing her own thing. I mean she died once, what's the worst that can happen to her?

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 11:38 PMI'm in the minority, but I did really like it.
I thought the military finally getting the Alien was the correct way to go (technically I think they weren't military though) and I did like the cloning angle especially the failed Ripley clones scene.
What I didn't like was the last act with the hybrid creature, didn't like the design of the creature either.

AdminPraetorianJun-04-2012 12:09 AMMay I say that Call is the hottest android EVER! YES I am female and YES I love her more than Fassy.
Call is supposed to be uber emotional, she was an "auton", a robot made by robots. It's that emotional element about them that buried the whole industry.

The script was done by Joss Whedon and he meant it to be corny like "Firefly" and "Buffy", sadly the director didn't get that.. :(

MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 4:18 PMI like the android and she did played her part well. I was quite confused how she was hiding the andorid part from others.
Only thing that made me puke was the "hybrid" thingy of alien and humans.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 11:33 PMI also loved this movie at first it was everything I wanted it to be cool funny visually stunning. reminded me of Aliens. up until the birth of the Bablien. which sucked. looked like a gay baby pumpkin head chased ripley aroung like "mama!" ruined the ending anything woulda been better. ive read joss's original script the newborn sounded way cooler in that script. i think that the freaky french director is to blame for the odd camp direction the film took.

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 5:29 AMAlien 3 should have ended the series.
But the studio wanted more money out of the franchise so they wanted another sequel only to be more careless with it.
Alien Resurrection was made as dark-funny movie and made for money.
If anyone must to be blamed for this movie I blame the studio because this wasn't only alien movie the studio messed it up.
example: Alien 3 and the garbage AVP films.

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 5:39 PMYou can't tell me Johner in Resurrection wasn't worth rooting for! What about Vriess? My favorite part about Resurrection were the characters (Whedon fan here). Movie was awesome up until the hybrid alien. Also interested in more of the android's evolution/revolution...

MemberOvomorphJun-19-2012 6:21 PMI really liked Alien Resurrection, especially the extended version. The soundtrack is absolutely amazing. Johner and Vriess are awesome characters and they reminded me of the marines in Aliens with the constant one-liners. The Newborn Alien actually scared the crap of me the first time I saw the film, partly because of the advanced animatronics used in it. I prefer this film over Prometheus any time of the day.
