To Be or not To BE

Firstly I’d like to say that the opening sequence to the movie is truly beautiful with a superb orchestral score, really does make you think about the beginning of life!
I've been, like others, looking forward to this movie for so long..... I have now seen it twice because the first time I was all taken in with the effects and the 3D visuals which are great but I still prefer 2D movies!
Like the first viewing I came away thinking, well I didn't know what to think, they could've done so much more with this movie, it's a bit disjointed. Even though I liked the opening sequence it wasn't clear whether this was on earth before all life, dinosaurs etc. or on another planet!
It then briefly touches on the guys finding the cave paintings and then immediately they are arriving at the planet where these beings have directed us, no real introduction to the characters, they could of built upon the origin of life a lot more during this stage of the movie!
The movie then unfolds far too quickly, some of the characters just don't fit in with the finding of 'Mankind', the punk who likes rocks just doesn't fit it and the Captain is too much of a joker, to the guy who comes face to face with a new life form and treats it as if it were a baby!
The holographic video was good but there was no explanation to why the engineers were running away and from what exactly!? You really do need to treat this movie as a 'stand alone' movie and try not to think of it as a prequel. The bit where David puts a drop of the black goo in Charlie's drink is odd, how does David know that this is some sort of DNA altering drug!?
The scenes with Vickers in could've been cut completely as there was no need for her character in the film at all, also the part where the two pilots decide to side with the captain and meet certain death is just too blasé... as if they just don't care about their own lives, it's just not fitting!
Anyway besides all this I did like the movie, the second time I did enjoy it more, the way it ended with Elizabeth wanting to go to the planet where the engineers originated from was a bit too far fetched, any human who had been through what she had would just want to get back to the safe confides of home! Also with it being left open for a sequel I would've thought that returning to earth with the alien ship would make a much better intro to a sequel than Elizabeth visiting the engineer’s home planet with just the head of the android!!
