MemberOvomorphJun-05-2012 4:17 PMHypothesis (and apologies in advance if someone has previously posted this theory - I know I can't be the only person who's thought of it):
What if the black fluid "came first"? It seems to move about of it's own accord, has an apparent "will", and is able to mutate whatever life forms it infects to it's own ends. Also, we know that the Space Jockeys are genetically identical to humans (though they sure don't look it). So. What if...
A dwindling quantity of black ooze ("liquid Evil", in essence) found it's way to Earth, transformed primitive humans into "Space Jockeys" (much like it appeared to be doing to Holloway), imbued them with the knowledge and will to engineer/grow spacecraft that would carry them back to it's point of origin, where they could assist it in replenishing itself (and before departing, they of course, left "signposts" around the globe to entrap any unfortunate sentients who may follow in subsequent ages).
Of course, the drawback is that too much of it is toxic, thus the "sacrificial" engineer disintegrates when he ingests more than his cells can withstand. And, similarly, generating a sizeable quantity (such as it would take to return and *infect* all life on Earth - perhaps the REAL "plan") ends up being lethal to the original (compartively minimal) "facility staff".
It's something of a stretch, admittedly, but I do think that the overall plot tends to make a bit more sense when viewed from this angle.

MemberOvomorphJun-05-2012 4:40 PMIf the goo was the villain, then do you think the movie lacked a villain? Would it be Vickers? The Engineer?

MemberOvomorphJun-05-2012 5:05 PMI think one of the neat things about it is that *most* of the characters and factions seemed to have a sinister agenda. Made the whole thing wonderfully creepy i.m.o. One of the major themes that runs through it, though, is tracing things back to their roots so - this is kind of my attempt at that(?)

MemberOvomorphJun-05-2012 7:28 PMYou may be right, but the whole black goo thing then reminds me too much of The X-Files: Fight The Future, another Fox property, that illustrated an evolution for the grays that was later expanded upon in the series. Basically in that film, the black oil, which has some kind a will of it's own, represents the un-reconstituted form of the aliens that claim to be the original inhabitants of Earth. It would infect a host and a creature would grow inside and then claw it's way out. In that form the creature is feral. Then in the TV series it was revealed that under certain conditions, particularly hot, the creature goes through a metamorphosis into the gray alien.
Obviously reminiscent of Alien, I would not be surprised if the black goo idea was subconsciously inspires by the black oil in The X-Files. Either way, I agree the black goo is bad news and is best avoided. Cheers.

MemberOvomorphJun-06-2012 5:27 PMi always had the idea that the black goo was a being of its own. it has thoughts and wants to evolve to become a phisical being but needs a host do so. it would then take the dna and push it to its maximum potential.
i find it interesting that the alien is black and the goo is too. i suppose the goo starts of as a substance and after certain stages(infetion to holloway or male who delivers it to a womens womb. then she produces cuddles to then lay embryo into the jockey to then turn to the xenomorph we kinda know) so i think even if we see different creatures like the facehugger, cuddles or cobrasnake , they are all with the jockey and the xenomorph different stages and forms the black matter turns itself into and as the xenomorph is the last stage i think it is then perfected.
the mastermind and god i guess will be either the black mass or different beings that we haven´t encountered yet.
