Hi all, Has anyone watched Alien 3 recently? Last night I decided to put it on again since I hadn't seen it in a very long time and was amazed to find the blue ray version completely updated and parts redone. I know this is probably old news to some but firstly the alien now comes from an ox and not a dog, yet parts of the film the alien looks the same and still has some of the dog traits and at the end we don't see the queen coming out of ripley's chest! Don't get me wrong it was nice they tried to tidy it up a bit but wow talk about re writing things, where George Lucas when you need him ;p

Your right it is old news :) I first saw the extended version on the DVD box set that came out years ago, and more recently on the bluray set. It's not a director’s cut as we would traditionally think of it as the director washed his hands of the project and didn’t want anything more to do with the film. Alien 3 had a troublesome production, with the studio heads interfering on every level, which led to the final result being a disjointed movie. I think it went through a couple of directors, if my memory serves me right? By the time they came to film it they already had the sets built with no script to work with, apparently they were writing the script on the day of filming! It's sad really as I believe Alien 3 had so much more potential. The extended cut makes for a far better film in my opinion, and the ox was the original chest buster but they decided to change it at a later date. In the extended cut I find the pacing of the film much better, and there are quite a few extra scenes which fleshes things out a little bit. I quite liked the overall sad and depressing felling of the film, as the aliens are relentless and in the end they got Ripley, even though she put up a dam good fight in the process! It did have quite a poignant felling to it. The only thing I didn’t like about the extended cut was the removal of the queen chest buster. In the theatrical version is was quite a strong and dramatic scene, and the music was spectacular, but I feel the extended cut weakened the scene by removing the queen and cutting a section of the music out.

In the novel for this movie, the chestburster came from an Ox. Ripley described it as "different from the others, its head is more massive". The Alien was also captured in the toxic waste tank, but one of the nut-job inmates who thought it was god let it loose again. I believe that for me, reading the novel before seeing the movie is what ruined it. I was expecting those scenes, and when they didn't appear, it totally screwed the film. Still, over the years it has aged a bit better and I can now at least tolerate it if i've got nothing better to do.

@ Jc Them scenes are in it now :) @ Facebugger Yeah, I have to admit i quite enjoyed the film too, I knew there were a lot of issues with the production etc but can't believe I been watching the old version when i had this :) Totally again, with the original it was a powerful ending and ruined it a bit but the rest where they could have tidied the film up nicely.

@ Pulserifle - I don't know why this topic didn't get put in the Alien Discussions section, but you may be interested in this post (and video link) I recently made over there about a certain 'combination' cut I'm hoping to get organised in certain circles at the moment - Your text to link here...
