If you oreder from a site like fandango it tells you if the theatre allows reserved seats. Most just have a section in the theatre for those reserves so you don't get to pick your seat or anything. You wouldn't have to wait in line to get a decent seat though.
Probem is only a few theatres, at least in my area where there are 100s of theatres, do it.

There are 2 ways if you order an online ticket. One is you go to the automated ticket machine(like an atm for movie tickets) and swipe the card you bought the tickets with. It will print them out. No line. In every theatre I've been to they give you the glasses as you hand your ticket to be ripped. The 2nd is the theatre has a "will call" line where only people who pre-ordered can pick up their tickets.
Hope that helps.

Ok, there are 3 ways. 3rd being pick them up early
You're worried about waiting in line to buy a ticket but not worried about waiting in line for a seat?

Yeah I got mine from the way RepDetect described it. Through the automated ticket machine.

Ya, if you bought your tickets online that's easy. If you don't have reserved seating plan on getting in line for prime seat location.
Regarding picking up your ticket you need to check the site where you got it. Where I got mine they actually send a confirmation to my phone with one of those I think q-codes, (those square barcodes) and can just scan it at the theater.

I am going to assume so. A lot of non Alien fans are wanting to see this as well. I'm sure the box-office for the movie will be solid. I would go in to your local theater tomorrow and see if you can get a ticket early. Just ask the employees at the front desk if they are selling tickets for Prometheus at such and such. Usually they will sell them early. I just walked in and went to the automated ticket machine but if its not working they will just have you ask up front for a ticket. Just ask around and you will find out. Trying to get a ticket online takes more time and its more of a hassle. Just go into your theater.

Well at my local theater there are no machines, and they give you the 3d glasses when you get your ticket. So if I preorder mine then how would I get my glasses, and is there a seperate line for people that pre ordered the tickets?

They would just give you the glasses if you went up to the front desk and asked them for a ticket for the 3-D showing. Then whenever you go you you'd have the glasses with you. These questions are better for your local theater to answer for you. Like I said if you just walk in and ask them they will tell you all you need to know. Tomorrow just go in and ask or you could just call as well.

I went and picked my tickets up early at the teller, and requested my 3d glasses early.
Yes, the theatre will be packed, especially for Imax 3d viewings

If you want a rough idea how busy ticket sales will be, one thing you can try if there is a theater with reserved seating. Go online for that theater and go thru the steps to purchase a ticket and it will ask you to pick your seat. You don't actually have to purchase the ticket, but it will give you an idea how the seating is filling up in a reserved seating theater which is typically more expensive. A non reserved seating theater would likely be more crowded.
If you can do reserved seating that is the way to go. No dealing with lines. You can show up minutes before the show and your seat will be waiting for you.
Good luck, I have my reserved seat.
