I can't help but remember this quote after I watched Prometheus. The biggest idea I saw in the film was the concept of God wanting to destroy us, as David says "To create a thing, one must destroy a thing." Myself I am fascinated by the premise so maybe that is why I liked that piece of the story so much. If this were to be true occurrence, (finding our creators and also finding out they want to destroy us) I feel it would totally alter man-kind forever and nothing would be the same. Back to this in a moment, let me give a review.
I'm going to get the things I didn't like out of the way first. Prometheus didn't have the best soundtrack. Stand alone the soundtrack isn't too bad but hearing it during the film was a bit of a distraction. The re-occurring theme you hear during the film, (the bright sounding horn melody) was a bit to Star Wars for me. I expected a much darker soundtrack.
If only Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross could have done this film's soundtrack.
Next, the editing was "off" to me. There is an early error (maybe I missed something but I'm fairly sure) when seeing the cobra-hugger come up out of the water, go in the water, and there it is out of the water again. This was an obvious one. The other editing I disliked was how short the mutant/Fifield scene was. Just when his character development was actually getting better. That could have went on for another couple of minutes and I would have loved it. Also, the engineer needed more screen time. I'm really crossing my fingers for an extra loooong director's cut since I'll be buying this for home entertainment. Lastly, the edit didn't allow us to see the background cast at all. I had no idea how many other people were on the Prometheus other than the stars of the film. This could have been handled better.
On to what I enjoyed, mostly the concept of discovering our creators and then finding out they want to kill us because they can. Oh David how right you were when explaining to Charlie how bad it would feel to know that. What, do you think your creator owes you any answers? No they don't. To me that is a terrifying concept. When they wake the engineer and all hell breaks loose my eyes were wide with wonder. I've heard some question why the engineer did this. Well, if you made your life's work, your cultures life work, and then someone made a tin-can imitation (David) you would probably be
upset. I would be, I would wad the imitation of my masterpiece up, spit on it, light it on fire, then kick whoever's ass did the cheap mock up.
The visuals are great, and probably the best thing about this movie. I have questioned the value of watching movies on the IMAX screen at my local cinema but Prometheus was visually worth it. The landscapes are the best I've seen in awhile. This is up there with the landscape Ridley brought us in Gladiator. I especially liked the sand-storm scene, the shot of Prometheus being battered by the storm was reminiscent of the Nostromo being battered by a storm in ALIEN.
My favorite character was David by far. Second was Shaw, and third Vickers. Charlize Theron did it again and once again I totally hate her. What a B*TCH! When she dosn't let the crew onto the ship, and takes a harsh action, I wanted to jump up and scream at her. That is good acting IMO. Fassbender was a great and probably the best character. WoW. The smarta$$ robot that manipulates everyone to complete his orders. David was interesting because, yes he did some heinous things, but the crew needs him so they can survive. He embodies what it would be to have a human like entity that lacks human emotion. This is another scary concept if it were to come true.
My least favorite are Fifield (pre mutation) and Millburn. I was actually glad to see their demise but maybe that is why they are written to be so hokey. The audience finds them annoying and we are glad to see them go.
So I give it a 4 of 5 rating. The score could have been soooo much better. The editing of the film did not do the film justice either. Oh yeah, a very cheesy moment was Captaion Janek playing accordian, I half expected him to break out the theme song from the office. Aside from these things, I really enjoyed it and hope there is more from this universe. I know some have really disliked the film but I couldn't help but enjoy. Sure I have questions but I have some answers to.
I was entertained and enjoyed the build up to the film. The concept of our creators wanting to destroy us totally got to me and I can't help but wonder just what if that was true. I've read some didn't like the character development or lack there of, hopefully a longer cut would help this because I did have trouble deciphering who some of the lesser characters were.
Finally, Fox if you are listening (I know they probably aren't but I can wish), if there's another Prometheus installment make the release dates the same world wide. Waiting and reading all the reactions before it came to the USA was killing
me.
P.S. I'm not going to get into an argument over this film, if you do not feel as I did that is OK with me and I'm not
trying to change anyone's mind. I'm writing this to let the people on here I have talked to know how I interpreted the
film.
