Alien DNA
MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 1:49 AMJust got home, I have no idea why all the bad reviews for. Maybe they knew too much about the movie before seeing and ruined it for themselves. It's no way comparable to AVP, no bad acting and it does not feel rushed at all. It left no definitive answers, more questions really and left open ended..... There's going to be at least one more sequel if not two, of course the movie would end this way. I really don't think the movie missed its mark like some said

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 1:55 AMAs a fan of movies I really enjoyed it. As a fan of the alien franchise I was slightly dissapointed. The dissapointment would have been massive, had I not known going in that the movie was going to barley focus on any alien.
This movie asked more questions than it answered imo. I really don't like that, but it seems that's all most movies do today.
All of the surprising deaths I already knew about months ahead of time. why Weyland wanted to go to the planet was obvious.
Vickers death, too uneventful, and very lame.
David's motivation for why he does things, is still unclear. Sometimes he comes off mean just to be mean.
I didn't really need to see the sort of alien that emerged at the end, because it still didn't really setup anything, except a sequel to this movie.
Shaws reason for going to the engineer planet lacked substance.
What is the engineers motivation?
However, if I knew nothing about alien, it would have been a fantastic story.
The visuals make this move, and it is truly breathtaking.
Overall I give it a B plus, just because it asks more questions about the alien series, than it answers.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 2:10 AMI just got home from seeing the movie and I was very engaged the entire time. In fact, I kind of had to snap myself back into reality - the 3D in this movie is incredible.
The theater wasnt full being that it was after midnight on a weekday, however there were quite a few people. Normally there is scattered chatting throughout most movies I see in the theater. There was dead silence throughout the entirety of this film. Either most people were asleep - which I find highly unlikely - or this movie maintained 100% of everyone's attention.
I, for one, loved Prometheus. I have never had so many questions circulating within my mind between walking from the theater to my car in any movie I have ever seen. I have been a frequent visitor of this site for many months, have read many thoughts, theories and European opinions, spoilers and reviews (since it was released earlier in Europe). From what I have gathered, there is a significant amount of negativity surrounding the story, the acting, the content, etc.... this is something I do not understand.
Yes, there were a lot of questions raised in this movie - but did everyone expect answers to every question that 'Alien' raised?? Why does everyone need answers to everything? Prometheus will most likely have sequels and maybe some of those questions will be answered. One thing is for sure, Prometheus set the stage for what I believe will be an amazing story.
The link to Alien and the Alien franchise - well, the movies that mattered anyway (I personally think linking Predator and Alien was a bad idea), was apparent. The Alien movies are kind of a side story compared to the universe presented in Prometheus. The ideas are much larger and instill many more questions - and - more excitement as to what is going to happen next.
I thought Prometheus was one of the best Sci-fi movies made in a long time. When the end credits popped up, no one clapped...not even me... and I loved the movie. Personally, I think everyone in that theater was lost within their own thoughts and feelings just as I was... and not only about Prometheus, but the ideas about our own origins and the 'whats' and 'whys' we all ask ourselves at some point in our lives.
I suggest every American who reads these boards to see it as soon as possible - I would like to hear your opinions.
Good night.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 2:24 AMI thought it was excellent. Thanks to this forum, I went in with low expectations, and I put any thoughts of this movie tying in with ANY other movie aside. I expected no more from Prometheus than I did any other one-shot sci-fi flick such as Independence Day or The Fifth Element. But I was pleasantly surprised. The movie did tie in quite a bit to the Alien universe. It did develop characters enough to care for, just not all of them. There were plenty of emotional ups and downs. And if you are telling everyone that the movie left more questions than it answered, then you need remedial math courses because you can't put two and two together. My favorite spine tingling shot was of the "Dentist Chair" cominy up out of the floor and the Engineer being encased in his bio suit.
I do have a few minor quibbles. The score was to flashy, and sounded like it was ripped straight out of Star Trek: Generations. There are plenty of older actors out there who could fill the part of Peter Wayland without all those crappy prosthetics, also ala Star Trek's dr. Noonian Sung. And, if you are not a fan of Alien, this movie will probably leave you wondering WTF.
You can call off the eagle; Ridley is unbound. Thanks for the ride. JC, aka "Hyperion", signing off.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 2:48 AMI was in a packed house in the Imax, and while there was plenty of noise before the movie, there wasn't even a peep till the humor of "love the one your with" bit, then all heck broke loose.
I was very happy with the result. The last bit seemed tacked on. Shaw was kind a boring till she decided to be a badass. And this is how I look at it.
Alien - Horror
Aliens - Action
Prometheus - Exploration and Creepy as hell, Think mountain of madness.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 3:03 AMI thought it was an amazing return to the sci-fi genre for Ridley Scott:
Visual virtuosity, with several, memorable set-pieces, one of which was highly original, and simultaneously worked to illustrate just how advanced the engineer's technology really is.
Top-notch acting from all the principles, with more or less, credible character motivations, and a number of different agendas at cross purposes.
Really nasty gigereque creature designs, with a definite nod to classic Lovecraftian horror aesthetics.
A truly dark mythos, shrouded in mystery; entirely appropriate to the "Alien" universe, with equally troubling religious implications.....yet the movie avoids adopting a particular POV. "If they made us, who made them?" Why are some Engineers willing to sacrifice themselves to create life, if there's a chance others will negate the results of that sacrifice, through subsequent destruction?
All in all, I thought it was the most beautifully crafted, thought-provoking sci-fi film I've seen since "A.I." ( IMO, For all their brilliance, the subtexts of "Children of Men" and "District 9" were about very down to earth, political themes. ) The notion that "God" sacrificed himself so that we might live, isn't original......neither is the notion that he might choose to smite us.
Actually portraying God as a malevolent, all too fallible and mortal Dr. Frankenstein, is pretty ballsy by comparison.
