The Engineer was only after Weyland and David, no one else had to die.

The Engineer was waiting for some sign of respect. David and Weyland, showed no humility whatsoever, so they had to die. Think about it, the Engineer was perfectly calm when he came out of cryosleep, he just stared. Then Weyland signals himself as the leader of the group in a violent way, by indirectly hurting Shaw. David makes it worst when he blabs out his dying master's unreasonable request without so much as a 'hello' or 'how do you do'. (whatever David said was VERY BRIEF, and sounded more like an order then a request.) After the Engineer gives David a "WTF did you ask me, you cheeky bastard" look, he caresses David's head and realizes that David is an A.I. so he tears David's off and uses it to kill- not the security, not the doctors- but Weyland, the leader, the most pitiful looking, physically week, person in the room. The Engineer was trying to establish himself as the Alpha Male. But then the bodyguard shot him and it all went to hell from there. Had they done things Shaw's way, they might have avoided unnecessary death. The Engineers are not unreasonable people. Shaw knows this and probably knows how to address them and what to expect. She's an History buff for crying out loud, and perhaps knows some things David doesn't, like more about the Engineer's history on earth, like more obscure mythology behind them. Otherwise, she wouldn't attempt going to the Engineer's homeworld... unless she's completely lost her mind.

Be humble in the presence of 'god'. Even Indiana Jones knew that!

Indeed, but still, before he tears off Davids head, he did that pet thing with his hand on his head. I know that's important, but don't know how yet.

This is my take: The Engineers realize their mistake in revealing their homeworld's location to the humans. They had to destroy Earth because the humans will one day, be advanced enough to meet them or travel anywhere else in the universe, discovering the black goo for themselves. It will be too late to control to them by the time the humans have attained technological advancements in space travel. They would have spread across the universe and populate everywhere. Thus to control the destructive proto-Xenos would prove difficult. The Engineers must destroy once and for all, by infecting them with goo externally. But the most important reason that the humans must die is wholly different. Throughout their history, the humans developed their own gods, forgetting their Creators despite numerous proofs of their existence. So mankind must die for their unbelief. But before they could undertake the mission, a possible black goo outbreak in the temple killed many of the Engineers. Only one Engineer remained in stasis. Awakened by the android, he was asked to reveal the secret of immortality. The Engineer discovered (by placing his hand on the android's head) that the synthetic had stolen one of the ampules containing the life-creating goo. Perhaps the Engineer was so appalled that he gave the blasphemous humans a fatal beating.

Well, this would correspond to the Damon's Interview where he speak's about Engineers as god and creators. However....I don't trust him :). And I don't trust to single details in the movie, unless they are approved by the other ones, cause Damon is a guy who likes to fck up people with story line which leads to nowhere :)

If i'm not mistaken, after the Engineer is woken up and rises from the Cryo-chamber he falls to one knee, this is generally a sign of respect? He only becomes violent when he realises David is an AI. The Engineers are permitted to seed life in the cosmos. Their lesser children perhaps are not? I feel the Engineers are more like gardeners, who answer to a more powerful authority. The Engineers urgency to return to earth is maybe to avoid our transgression being noticed so that the Engineers overall project is not unbalanced. There are clearly other significant characters and motivations that have not been revealed.

I think the "pat on the head" was more an expression of admiration for a piece of art, that humans would be able to create such realistic immitations of themselves. But it's a pride thing, and he tears his head off for obvious reasons. Laurellestars is right: Shaw would have handled the situation, things could have gone differently but the finality would be the same. Weyland had to die, David was walking a dangerous path because he knew too much, and Shaw was too stubborn with her inner spiritual conflict.

mrphew : your explanation is the best explanation I've read anywhere as to why the engineers want to destroy humankind. It makes perfectly good sense and it's staring us in the face so closely that we overlook this obvious explanation.

The engineers didn't reveal their home world to the Humans. Its clearly a military instillation. They design bi weapons. Thats why at the end she wants to go to their home world...

Eman2341- you are right they didn't show the humans where exactly. What they showed is a probably a solar system (as depicted on the ancient cave walls), one of them being the moon that contained the black goo. This is where they store and harvest the goo. The giant head is probably a symbolic structure to show humans how it began, a religious structure if you will, for the humans to pay homage. David knew their location. It is etched on the walls or perhaps on the starmap from the bridge. It is clear if humans were intelligent enough they could know how to get to the Engineers' home world.

Maybe David finally realised that Weyland was in the wrong, yet his protocols would not allow him to do anything about it. David sacrificed himself to stop Weyland in his tracks?

@Drekinus Walking? David was happily skating the edge! Then the poor boy fell on his ass. @ mrphew Yes, the Engineers must have realized their folly at some point, very good sir. But why reveal the location of their military base to their human worshipers? Prometheus leaves us with so many questions. Also, I’m not sure the engineer is a telepath, lol. @Dee I love your idea of their being other authority figures behind the engineers. Gardeners, brilliant. @MVMNT I don’t see David sacrificing himself for anyone... yet. He wants to live, that much is clear in by the end of the movie. He still has a lot to learn about morals and ethics, if he even has the capacity to compute of that mushy, awesome, stuff.

@laurellestars The moon is perhaps the source of the black goo or a place where they store it for distribution purposes. They cannot store it in a living breathing planet for fear of contamination. The military is possibly there as sentinels, to guard against thievery or desecration of the temple and a launchpad for their intergalactic 'activities'. Unfortunately the Engineers were destroyed there and only one remained in stasis. It is also possible that their home world has been utterly devastated by the proto-xenos or black goo contamination and a few remained in hiding, trying to rebuild their world. Which is why they could not send a probe team to investigate the loss of contact on the moon after two thousand years. Maybe they did send probes but they were lost as well. This might set the tone for the sequel.
