Isn't this plot point ridiculous

Far-fetched anyone?!
Shouldn't we have a had a minor plot device explaining why the ship lands there?

I think the point he trying to make is the fact that on such a vast area the one point and spot the find to land happens to be where the temples and Jockeys are etc...does have a point i though this too...could have been an explanation or survey done to see whats the best part or area to explore initially...wouldnt take long to fit that in..or it may have been cut.

If anyone has played Mass Effect 2 I think we all know how mind numbingly dull scanning a planet is....
That said I agree with the post, whilst Mr Scott is obviously just trying to get to the point. The chances of coming into earth orbit and instantly finding Sydney Harbour is slim...
I think it's not to much to ask to have had the age old plot device of homing in on a feint energy signature such as from the obviously still powered up life support and atmosphere processor.
To just happen across it in your first five minutes is a stretch.

Scans and radars i think and btw it takes some time from when they enter in the atmosphere to the arrive to the temple valley ...is a movie after all the cant pass half hour searching for it !!!

As they are entering the atmosphere and scanning it, one of the pilots/scientists observes that they detect metal. Then they fly towards it.
It's a 2 hour film. I'm happy with a single line of exposition as opposed to 30 minutes of flying around a planet with idle banter.

Melkor, the line I mentioned was actually in the movie.
It's along the lines of "I've detected metal" and then they fly off in that general direction, I'm assuming. It isn't massively clear, but it at least means they haven't just stumbled upon the only temples on the entire moon.

I left this movie feeling like a LOT of exposition was left on the cutting room floor...
Cannot wait to get the "uncut" version on DVD...!

Yes, it is in the movie, a lot of the reaction is that it cut so spare that if you miss a line you might think there is a plot hole ;)

guys if you are going to get fret up about this then i hate to think what you think about te actual plot holes and unanswered questions!
Personally i tont think its a big deal - it doesnt make the film "unbelievable" or anything - as i say the film has far more serious problems then that!

GetEveryone is correct. I think it was either Chance or Ravel who said it. You even see the "straight lines" pop up, highlighted on a screen, before Holloway says anything about God not building things that way.
This isn't a plot-hole or discontinuity.

@the-devils-advocate
Can you be more specific about the serious problems you had with this film?
June 08, 2012
Yeah, some of the supposed "plot holes" I've heard people mention, really aren't. I read a number of complaints about how nobody worries about the "squid-baby" after the autodoc extracts it from Shaw.
The truth, is that Shaw runs a decontamination cycle after exiting the autodoc, and we see the squid-baby stop moving; apparently dead. The only person who even knew Shaw had anyhing growing in her womb, was David. Additionally, at this point, the shit really starts hitting the fan and the crew has bigger worries. Can we blame them if none of them ever imagined that a tiny creature could develop into a gigantic monster over a relatively brief period of time?.........especially, if they never watched "Alien?" ;- )

Paraphrasing
Ford: Thats one big Mountian, 50,000 feet
Capt: we will use that as our guide
Chance or Revels: I think i am finding metals
then Charlie finds the temples.
