MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 10:38 AMAn articulate and well written critical review, Melkor.
You can expect abuse, accusations of 'not understanding it' and 'overhyping it in your own mind' in return ;)

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 10:44 AMThis is definitely one of the more fair and 'to the point' reviews currently being given out by the fans. Good read.

new review....personally i like that it asks questions without answering them. This is partly why i am such a fan of David Lynch also. I like food for thought....

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 11:17 AMYou missed the biggest plot hole of them all... and if you haven't seen the film yet, I suggest you stop reading now...
Why did Weyland bother to send any of the human crew on this mission?
As is clear early on, David is more that capable of doing everything on his own. He also follows instructions to the letter.
So if you were Weyland, wanting to find the secret to eternal life (something of huge personal and commercial value), why would you bother to send anyone on such a vital mission other than David... or maybe three or four Davids, just to be on the safe side.
It makes no sense whatsoever.
Talk about dumb writing.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 11:36 AM@PFC Hudson- haha, noted, but you have to allow movie directors SOME artistic license... I only covered what I deemed to be critical plot-holes, god knows there are many more...
@ GalacticNorth- yes I agree with you. As I say in the review, 'enigma can be a fine thing, but not when you begin to suspect that the script-writers might not have any answers after all...' Some mystery is always good though...
:-)

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 11:56 AM@Melkor - nothing to do with artistic license, it's just bad writing.
None of the human characters do anything while they are on the mission, apart from fly the ship (which David could easily do himself). They don't speak the engineer's language (David does), they don't read the engineer's language (David does); they do absolutely nothing - so why were these so-called experts sent?
At least Cameron realised that he had to give Ripley a reason to return to LV426, when common sense dictates she would be mad to go back.

Kinda agree.
Loved the film but left me feeling like I ordered second best off the menu.
Direction:
Little tension/
little use of lighting/ steam and shadow as I had grown to love.
Weak characters with no motivation just acting as if they were paid for the day as temps..
Screenplay:
Lack of believability
A substandard weak minded crew with evidently poor emotional decision making abilities akin to children rather than adults; let alone scientists on a world history changing endeavour.
Hello; who runs HR at Weyland? Have psychometric tests become obsolete?
No protocol for encountering what was obviously anticipated IE alien evidence let alone meeting alien life or technology. Despite the trillions of whatever currency spent on the mission.
Lack of basic understanding of new encounter quarantine.
No critical event process or policy
No security steps
Perhaps, David likes the film Lawrence of Arabia , as Lawrence likes the desert. It is clean a subject an android or whatever he is, can relate to and Lawrence as portrayed is somewhat lacking in social skills but high in intelligence and self confidence which both unnerves and commands respect from those he encounters.
What was the final creature? The queen; a queen?
I thought Predators visited earth and brought aliens there to hunt. Did the predators borrow the engineer’s lab ooze to make their own? If not; I didn’t see a trade counter with a till selling them or was it hidden behind the silly head?
If the engineers didn’t like experiment earth why not simply destroy it rather than issue a map to a destroy yourselves diner way out of town? ~If on route to, why didn’t the engineers leave the planet? Why were they running? Why did the sleeping engineer survive? Why didn’t he communicate with David. At least say “humans suck; I kill you”?
is the link to prometheus akin to the fact humans getting a tad close to their maker in ability so need wiping out. if so why bother in the ifrst place?

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 3:37 PM@Pfc Hudson- sending a bunch of androids alone may well have proved just as disastrous as sending a lone bunch of humans.
Anyway, by artistic license I mean he needs to humans there to make a movie ;-) But agreed, he could have worked a reason into the plot.
One of the most retarded things I found was the fact they only had the mission briefing when they go to the star system! COME ON! They would have needed to have detailed mission specific training well in advance...!!!
I didn't want my review to go on and on bit I definitely though the music was not perfect; I will add a section in the comments about other issues I found with the movie.
