Saw It... Loved It... See it TWICE.

I don't know what people expected and I'm truly sorry for you if your experience was negative, but I loved it. I've waited 33 years for this movie and I felt it totally delivered.
1. Plot: Great. Some holes... they'll be dealt with in the sequel (like the original SJ from '79 was dealt with in this film. Hell, we waited 33 yrs. for that!)
2. Score: Excellent! Very appropriate at all times. I write movie scores, so I feel I'm qualified to judge.
3. Character Development: Fine. The characters I needed to care about for the story were developed. The cannon-fodder was just that.
4. 3D IMAX was truly an experience to behold. See it that way if you can. I'm seeing it again on Sat.
In conclusion, I left the theater wondering what all the negativity and fuss was about. It wasn't "ALIEN 5" and it wasn't "ALIEN 0". It was it's own story set in that universe. I feel Ridley is totally vindicated in my eyes. Nice job... Sir!
See you around the forum!

Saw it at 12:01, was into it until about 1am, severely disappointed by 2. Plot falls apart halfway through, characterization goes out the window for 1-dimensional fodder and cheap thrills, obvious, OBVIOUS plot holes start popping in at the rate of about one every five minutes. Remember when Shaw escapes from enforced quarantine, runs fifteen feet from her captors, and is then left bizarrely and completely alone for a ten minute pointless body horror scene that runs contrary to the alien biology whatsits already-shaky internal logic, and is then left completely alone by the hardass who just immolated a guy to prevent contamination? Then, what a random zombie, surprise old man reveal that's expected and serves no purpose to the narrative, and a squid with no food source creating several hundred pounds of mass out of thin air so it can deus ex a random terminator away later... seriously guys, this was really bad by the time it ended. All the more disappointing for starting out so strong.

I have no problem that you like it, but you can't see why others don't?
Here's my summary ... while it looks great... Lindelhof seems to have concentrated on setting up a sequel to develop his "big philosphical question theme". and Prometheus is driven entirely to get us from the big opening "made by aliens" scene to the end scene where we have Shaw and David as the sole continuing character. Everything including logic, character consistency or development, or any other hint of credibility is sacrficed to get from one scene to the other because Lindelhof is too lazy or incapable to write a script that does so without being full of huge holes.
The drama, horror and action all suffer from the very bad set ups (stupid illogical deaths like Milburn and Fifield - had you not noticed Fifield lauched the probes and has a display feeding him their data, and also the 3d Map on the bridge of the Prometheus has a rotating yellow icon identifying EACH member of the away team ( so quite a few people have to become VERY stupid in order for these two to get lost and die, Fifield has to ignore his probe read out, forget to radio for help or answer when they mention a storm (and it's not cos he's too deep underground, the radios work later even further into the compound) and the away team leaders Shaw and the irresponsible Holloway never do a head/count radio check in, nor does the captain who bears some responsibility for getting people back to the ship.
Characters are fodder with the exception of David and Shaw, and halfway through I knew they would be the survivors, (possibly Vickers for a twist, or at least her death would be some big showdown with her dad, and a rebellion against the Weyland corps drive to acquire things)

@HH: Oh, I can see why others are bothered. I just choose to outweigh the negatives with the overwhelming positives.
You bring up Milburn as unlikely... I recall an Australian TV chap who died in just the same way... getting too close to the wildlife. (Shame, I truly respected the man and his family for what he/they were trying to do.)
As I previously mentioned, the original (1979) SJ could've been considered a HUGE (literally) plot hole... that seemed to work out pretty well.
My point?
Almost everything that bothered you/others about this movie, are the same things that bother me about almost ALL movies.

1. Plot: Great. Some holes... they'll be dealt with in the sequel (like the original SJ from '79 was dealt with in this film. Hell, we waited 33 yrs. for that!)
THAT wasn't a plot hole. It was an alien ship of unknown origin. A plot hole is something that isn't explained, and the LACK of explanation causes a contradiction in the film. I've done a thread on plot holes/bloopers which I won't repost here.
2. Score: Excellent! Very appropriate at all times. I write movie scores, so I feel I'm qualified to judge.

Writing a score, and editing it into the film are two different things. The music is generally good, if in places reminiscent of the War of the Worlds music with the things that sound like huge horns.
Appropriate at all times? Not sure. The scene where David is watching the Space Jockey briefing (and listening to them talk - there is audio on the hologram) seems to be all about their mission to wipe us out. And yet the music suggests wonder and amazement. An odd cue, unless we're supposed to as an audience be more involved in David's enchantment than the impending doom that scene shows for our own species.
3. Character Development: Fine. The characters I needed to care about for the story were developed. The cannon-fodder was just that.

Depends how easily pleased you are. out of 17, even if only two are to survive, the others should at least have some decent characters and development. Holloway's a jerk, actually less likeable than Fifield in my eyes.
Fifield gets dumb to suit the plot.
Captain also gets dumb when it suits the plot. (i don't mind a character making a mistake of judgement, that's human, but these guys actually drop IQ points and forget they have radios, and 3D maps, and camera feeds.)
I havent time to critique the others here in full - Dr. ford is wooden and says nothing the entire film that isn't just functional.
We see little of the two bantering pilots, who volunteer to die to save our planet. They go from being detached, gamblers to heros with little in between.
4. 3D IMAX was truly an experience to behold. See it that way if you can. I'm seeing it again on Sat.
I've seen it twice in 3D, visually great filming still didn't compensate for the TERRIBLE writing.

db:
seen it 3 times now and its just simply great.....what you say about the score is spot on....one of the best dramatic scores i've heard in a movie along with 'the mission' and 'jaws' and 'Blade runner'.

You sound like Shaw "I choose to believe" well, that's your right of course :)
You bring up Milburn as unlikely... I recall an Australian TV chap who died in just the same way... getting too close to the wildlife. (Shame, I truly respected the man and his family for what he/they were trying to do.)

first of all, Steve Irwin is a different story (and I've seen him in person). You seem to have overlooked some important points.
Steve Irwin may have been naive, but his actions would only be comparable, if he had swum away from his boat, ignored his compass and map, and a pile of other dead swimmers that looked like they'd been killed by the thing he's about to pet.
Milburns death would be credible as being due to professional enthusiasm if not for a few things - as a biologist, he should also have been interested in the extar terrestial head ,rather than walking away with "I do rocks, not heads, I'm out of here" Fifield.
He was also crapping himself by a pile of dead Space Jockeys, and when told that a probe was picking up signs of life nearby, he was 100% percent against going to investigate it. Suddenly when it's time to die, he loses his deep fear, and confronts something that goes out of its way to look like a cobra snake, one of the least touchy-feely creatures imaginable.
And this is ALL on top of the unlikely scenario whereby they get lost despite having all the technology they need to find out where they are in relation to the exit.
As I previously mentioned, the original (1979) SJ could've been considered a HUGE (literally) plot hole... that seemed to work out pretty well.

How is it a plot hole? What does in contradict? Why is it illogical, that in the vastness of space, somebody would find a derelict alien ship with a dead pilot? It's origin is unexplained, but it doesn't create any contradictions in the film.
My point?
Almost everything that bothered you/others about this movie, are the same things that bother me about almost ALL movies.
I don't watch MOST movies, I like to watch GOOD movies, and this, for all it's hype and spoilers and 'big questions' pretentiousness failed to deliver.
I'll admit to being a bit let down on the twist of mythology, not my cup of tea, but beyond that, it is so poorly crafted, even though it LOOKS great, and has lots of noise and carnage. It's a real turn off your brain film, which is the opposite of what it claims to be. It panders to the audience and TELLS rather than SHOWS its message, the horror is badly set up, and there's not enough tension or reason to care about the characters. Very very different from the merits of Alien and Aliens.

@HH:
Wow! Dude, you are extremely well-spoken. Very well thought out and nicely put together. You defend your viewpoints passionately.
BTW:
I also mix the scores I write into the independent films I write, produce, and edit. For the record, one of my TV series is already on PBS (3 seasons) and another is under consideration by a major studio I'm not at liberty to discuss yet. (N.D.A.) Again, if you saw it from my perspective, (and you might for all I know), you may have walked away with a different take on the experience.
I certainly respect your well supported opinion.

glad you liked it to db i had issues with the film but not as Poisonous as some and i did think it looked amazing but for me i was hoping for a tighter script and a bit more logical thinking from the Character's there are obvious flaws but overall its a great film.
