The run of the engineers, 2000 years ago

MemberOvomorphJune 08, 20121102 Views12 RepliesIn the movie, we see the run of most of the engineers to the temple, 2000 years before, in a hologram, activated by David. The one who felt on his knees and then forwards, his head cut off by the gate, is found by our crew. I assume that the gate is closed until now ( the moment in the movie when david activates the gate), because the decapitated engineer is still there. I wonder what happended to the other engineers? I suppose that they must be in the temple as I see no other gate, so the temple must be a closed room. Can someone post a suggestion what happened with them?

Actually, there is an open question there, but also I think you missed some detail.
The first hologram shows THREE engineers running to the temple chamber, one loses his head. The other engineers were piled up in a corridor outside another door, found by Milburn and Fifield AFTER they split off from the main group. (perhaps it was a back door to the temple.
I have a theory that the first three we saw were the same three who attended the briefing with the pilot Space Jockey. (if you watched closely when David activated the controls, 4 holograms come in, we hear audio and three leave, while the pilot gets ready for stasis)
Assuming these three are in charge of the bio-weapons part of the mission, they would also control that green crystal thing in the temple (perhaps that has some ability to help in an outbreak) - but we don't know what happened to the two who did make it in, and their bodies are not found. We don't see enough of the temple to know if there was an exit (trap door in the big giant head would be very corny in a scooby-doo kind of way).
We should assume that they didn't survive and stay on the ship, because surely they wouldn't leave a decapitated head lying around the temple?
We can assume everything was dormant, including the worms in there (after all they didn't eat the head despite having 2000 years to do so)
We don't know where the chestbursters went to that came out of the engineers, perhaps hibernating someplace else in the tunnels, that the crew didn't get to.
But its odd that we have two engineers and a few dozen chestbursters unaccounted for. Did they pile up the bodies of the dead engineers? It seems unlikely that they would all be killed in a pile doesn't it?
Was this set up this way for a reason, or just because it looked good on screen.
With Alien and Aliens there was never this confusion about scenes.

Hadley's Hope: the four Engineers in the map room all entered stasis.
Three of the sarcophogi had explosions emanating from the torso, so presumably there are dead bodies in them which we were never given an explicit glimpse of.

I think the worms were bought in on the foot off one of the Prometheus crew. Perhaps life forms were never meant to be in that room unprotected due to the nature of the black goo.

HADLEY'S HOPE, I see at least 12 engineers in the first hologram running. It is not clear if there is a split. One see indeed 3 engineers running to the gate of the temple, after taking a corner when the last one falls, stands up and falls agains on his knees before the gate. I think that at the end of this run, we just see the last 3 engineers. All the other ones are already in the temple. There happens something there, a new aggression. Later they were getting out, dead, out of the temple through another door by their chestbusters, where they still are.
GETEVERYONE,I do not see explosions from the torso of the 3 other sarcophagi.
I am just sure of this: when the whole group of engineers are on the run in the corridor, the last one looks at a moment behind; this means they are running away and are afraid something will catch them.

Now that does seem like a good point. They contaminated the room, by Dave opening it, and then brining in a worm. I think we did see the worms in a footprint in the gravel, but I interpreted that as meaning that the change in atmosphere, as well as the steps woke up these dormant creatures. that are in the gravel.
But what would stop worms getting in when anyone else enters? Don't see the Spacejockeys stopping to wipe their feet when they enter (or maybe the last guy did, and that's why he didn't get inside on time :))

I saw the movie for a second time: there are 3 sarcophagi with explosions on chess height.

Runing Engineers,,,
On my last viewing of this scene,,,the 'fallen Engineer' is clearly lagging and seems to stumble..(Other have suggested that he was caused to fall because of what was chasing him,,but that didn't come to me) THe other Engineers didn't turn around and try to help him.. In fact it was almost like they were running away from him.
He gets up and then sort of falls again in front of the door..What struck me was that he seems to fall far enough in front of the door that his head was not below the closing. PLus it was almost that he was pulled by others behind the door, After several replays it was unclear what exactly happenned as it was out of view,,
I thought it was strange that only his head was caught under the door,,like deliberate de-capitation..If the remaining Engineer was indeed running for his life,,even if wounded..his arms would be doing all they could,,and be found close to the decapitated head..
In the entire running sequence no running Engineer helped another ..and the laggard paid the price...

I want to know where the hell they all went. They ran into the chamber with all the vases, but no Engineers were in there. And why the hell would they run in there anyway? Plus judging from Prometheus's radar it looked like there was only one ship under there, they didn't leave on that at least. Guess they just hid in the room full of vases until later and left on a different ship? Who knows.

They must be somewhere,,,,
Forgetting what they were running from/afraid of... it was a big ship....so anything could be housed in the various chambers.holds..including some sort of transport system..
It was kind of suprising there was no support system for the Juggernaut..spare parts,,maintenance..
I mention this because with the number of pyrimids in the area would there be some sort of central meeting area,,main building...something that unites alll the ships in the area.
I suspect that the missing Engineers are elsewhere on the 'base'..and perhaps perished as well at some other location.

You should do your homework people: we can distinctly hear the deacon's scream at the beginning of the hologram sequence. Compare it to the one at the end of the film if you want (i did): Same sound. For the missing engineers in the ampule room watch the movie with Ridley Scott comment for he clearly states that there was a emergency escape backdoor . Just my humble contribution.

It is a sad day when the director comments has to add to the presentation..and not include it... in the final cut..for the audience to follow the storyline.
The running Engineers,,must have gone somewhere,,,somehow,,maybe by a means not yet shown..in this movie.
Still..why was this particular halogram shown....selected what must have surely been many other choices..
And this particular view?? A showing of how the other Engineers were heaped up..with the results of chest bursters..would also be of interest There must be some 'overseer' that is leading our group of adventurers.around..
