Prometheus...a difficult one to pin down

Traffic seems a bit heavy on the site today. Nice work, Chris and staff! I say challenging because it's difficult to talk about this film without sounding like I'm just bitching about the things I didn't like about it. I can also appreciate that it has to be very difficult for a writer to take on a project like this that people have anticipated for so long and not get it horribly wrong, to try to present something original that doesn't disappoint. Having said all of this, I would say I definitely enjoyed Prometheus, there's no question about that. BUT...I didn't expect to be left with so many unanswered questions, and it's hard to walk out of a cinema with so many unanswered questions when you thought you were going to see something that was going to answer a lot of them. For example: we see the Engineers seed life on Earth and then Shaw and Holloway discover the oldest Engineer cave painting on Earth, cool, I'm with you so far, Ridley. But how does Shaw come to the conclusion with such certainty that the Engineers created us, especially when she is the religious one? we arrive on LV-223, find the ship and a dead Engineer, then later Fifield and Milburn find a pile of them. What happened to them? I'm guessing we'll see in a sequel or two? I liked Janek, but for fuck's sake, didn't he seem a bit unconcerned that two of his crew were stranded inside the temple/ship? 'Sorry guys, I've gotta go have sex with Vickers' Wait, what? I mean, don't get me wrong, she is lovely, but... Why did the Engineers want to kill us? What did David say to him? A subtitle in that scene would have been much appreciated. I guess you could say it doesn't matter what he said to him, we just know that Mr. Engineer will now try to kill us all, but I can't get past this idea that they came to Earth, created life, and then tried to kill us as soon as we showed up on their science lab planet where they do their experiments with life. And also, why did they visit Earth and leave us clues to find the place? 'Here, go see where we experiment with life forms and when you show up, we're going to kill you all' Again, what? We see a lot of things in the ship 'head/urn chamber' that are still a complete mystery. Murals? Painting or stone carving of xeno-looking thing? Green crystal thing? At one point, Holloway looks at it and says "this place is just a tomb?" I'm guessing that some of these will be explained in a sequel? The whole Weyland and his motives plot felt a bit tired to me. I mean, if you're going to do a film that is supposed to be a new chapter in the Alien universe, and one of the central themes of the other films is 'the company will stop at nothing to get the life form' Shouldn't anything that even comes close to that be left out of the new chapter? Last but not least...didn't we hear Ridley insist that we weren't going to see a xeno in this, because he's been done to death. Ok cool, I can appreciate that. So why the last scene then? All in all, I did enjoy it, honestly, but I think there could have been a bit less teasing with some of these plot points, for example, we can draw the conclusion that the worms mutate into the hammerpede-thing when they come into contact with the black stuff, no problem. But why should we be left to draw our own conclusion on some of these major things like why do the Engineers want to destroy us? Seems a bit strange to me, unless you're setting us up for sequels, which it now appears they are. Which is also unexpected, I really did think we were going to see a complete story. NOW, here's what I loved about it: Fassbender was brilliant as David. Seriously, it really felt like we're watching a very intelligent robot life form. Very cool. I've heard a few people say that they thought he infected Holloway out of anger towards the humans, but I couldn't disagree more. I think he did because Weyland told him to, he is a robot after all and followed orders. I think Weyland wanted to see what their technology would do to a human before trying it on himself. Also, the beginning scenes of him alone on the ship were funny in a whimsical sort of way and showed that for a robot, he did seem to possess a bit of humanity (not to mention at the end when he helps Shaw.) Noomi was also excellent as Shaw, if she had been just a recreation of Ripley of course it wouldn't have been as good. She came across as vulnerable and yet incredibly tough when it came time to act, and the decision she makes at the end shows us someone who is seriously driven to get her answers. Charlize and Idris were also great (I always think of Idris as Mumbles, from Rocknrolla). I really feel now that they should not have showed the Prometheus/Engineer ship crash in the trailers. I've also read a lot of complaints from people saying 'the characters were all stupid, of course they wouldn't have taken their helmets off and done stupid things' but then again, if they didn't, how would anything ever happen? Lindelof said something like this in an interview, sort of "would you go see a movie where the character hears a strange noise in the attic but then doesn't go check it out?" All in all, an enjoyable ride, and I'll go see it again, but I really do hope some of the big questions are answered.

Well said on all your points! You hit every single one my brother and I had when we left the theatre today. Stunning visuals and what chills I got when the Engineer was roused but wow so many unanswered questions/plot holes. One of the strangest choices was the whole "squid" thing coming out of Shaw----wow what a scene but ...human dna and goo make a squid...eh? Then the full grown squid and Engineer make...wink wink...a xeno...Hmmm My bro and I like the theory about all 4 temples being Noah's Ark kind of labs...could give a plausible reason for the Queen-esque Xeno carving on the temple wall maybe? The strange holograms of all the Engineers running like crazy could be explained by loose Xeno's....but those are gonna be theories bounced around til we get a sequel... And speaking of sequel setup, the fact that Shaw left at the end to go find some of the very answers we are all asking....My brother pointed out that maybe SHE crash lands after a Xeno mishap and is the "Engineer" Just didn't seem to be an "answer" movie that so many of us Alien geeks wanted:) But like you said, all in all, whew what a ride

Hello, I was just trying to gather my thoughts after getting home from the theatre and you basically said everything I was going to say. The biggest thing on my mind is that the international trailer showed too much. They need to keep the scenes more generic for the sequel. The movie seemed to predictable at points. I guess like most of you I will need to see if again to soak it all in. I don't know if this has been brought up before ( im sure it has but I can't find it). Do you think the hosts nature/attitude/being good or bad would have anything to do with what type of xeno it gives "birth" too. Shaws baby didn't seem as nasty as to the protoxeno that came out of sj. I might not remember the scene right , but didn't the squidbilly go after the SJ and pretty much let shaw go. Was he protecting his mom from the SJ? Basically , the SJ was pist off , and look what nastiness came out of him in the final shot. Do evil beings pop out evil xenos :)
