So I was super excited about prometheus after the insane hype and lush visual presentation of the marketing machine that surrounded it. I think Im fair to say that everyone on this site has been a little dissapointed in its delivery; if only from the fact that no film can possibly live up to the hype machine driving this one.
I watched the movie twice, if for any reason to try and figure out if i liked it or not. Here is something that popped into my head after the second viewing.
I get the impression that the USP of prometheus is something of a red herring. Ridleey Scott said in big bold letters that he was from "The school of big things" or something along those lines- that the film was about "everything." after a second viewing i see the point of this remark. Ridley Scott clearly wanted to make a philosophical movie about the nature of creation but was in essence confined to a structure of a sci fi horror. The one interaction of prometheus that stands out is davids actions amongst both the humans and the engineers. He manipulates the entire plot to the point that he is aware that the engineers want to destroy earth, he mentions this to shaw before awakening the alien "to create one must first destroy." This has particular reverence given his line earlier regarding weyland "Secretly doesnt every child want its parents to die."
It was this, among with davids solitary scenes, that gave me the impression that ridley was trying to put more an emphasis on the relation between android and human rather than human and "engineer." In fact Id push to say that promethues has a hell of a lot more to do with blade runner than the original Alien. The Whole "Alien" aspect, in fat, falls flat in the film. Id challenge anyone to say that there was one genuinely "Scary" scene in the film. Rating fears or not, the films horror aspect was beige. To me its due to the fact that prometheus was never meant to be a sci fi horror but felt it had to be, in some respect, due to the nature of its heratige.
Im warbling and not sure if im making a point but id be glad to hear thoughts on this.
I will also say though since no one else mentioned is HOW FUCKING SHIT THE MUSIC WAS!!!!
why has there not been a thread on this!!!

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:03 PMI thought the exact same thing what he said was "I am from the all about everything school and this is all about everything", thus the DNA sequence at the start f the film, it is a SET UP for great things to come I feel! He's a freaking marketing genius IMHO.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:06 PMIMO the music wasn't shit, the movie had suspense and the themes and undertones were great. The more I think about it the more I love the movie and can't wait to see it again! Seeing it on a 6 story IMAX was amazing the way they shot it!!! Def had blade runner parallels...I think he tied so much into one it made it awesome! loved it

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:10 PM...the music was'nt great and it was'nt scary.......but seriously did you think alien was scary.....i thought that movie was smart and interesting....but even the chest burster scene was more shocking that scary IMO....Prometheus has so many more creature scenes than alien did and when that guy showed up all contorted like that (fifield or milburn or whatever his name was)...that was rather scary...loved that scene!

i can't disagree more on the musical aspect. To me it was cliché sci fi that bordered on sounding like the entry theme to the universal logo or the star trek series. To much "majestic" trumpet solo followed swiftly by timpani percussion........where was the suspense, where was the dread.
It cheapened the entire experience for me

AdminPraetorianJun-08-2012 8:18 PM@africa; I thought the exact same thing. The music I think ruined it for me TBH, I kept feeling like Capt Kirk was gonna make a speech everytime it played.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:26 PMoh another point from 2nd viewing regarding the "life cycle" or the monster..
Before the black goo comes out we see david stepping on the ground and worms coming out. The worms are mutated by the goo to make the "Cobra huggers" nothing to do with the other aliens. The goo just breaks down DNA then rebuilds it into other forms.
Right?

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:28 PMI really liked most of the music but it isnt a patch on the Alien music. No suspense, no dread. Also, the main theme was used in places I would prefer either a different piece of music or just no music at all...and it was used too often.

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 8:28 PMTo the musical aspect for the opening scenes for PROMETHEUS is awesome, where ridley takes us a look for the nature scenery, as for the scary scene, which turns out not that scary, had ruined some part of it.

Symbolising exactly the same thing, not in a horror movie mould, and managing to create SOOOOOO much more atmosphere than the BBC Planet Earth lite soundtrack of Prometheus's opening scenes of iceland
Im sounding like i hated this film WHICH I DIDNT. I just really hated the music :P

MemberOvomorphJun-08-2012 11:00 PMGuys, you complaining about the music? When I watched this film I didn't have time to be critical about the music, because I was to busy enjoying the movie as a whole. People need to stop comparing this film to Alien.
1. There both completely different films
2. Alien was made in a different era.
3. They deal totally different subjects.
4. Obviously the stories are not the same. Goodness sakes where do you see Ripely in this film.
I think if this film had greater part for the Xenomorph's people probably would have been even more disappointed. I also believe people need to have an imagination and open mind to enjoy this film, which I happend to have when going in to see this movie.

MemberOvomorphJun-13-2012 7:02 PMMore to do with Blade Runner than Alien...
That's interesting. Genuinely.
I hadn't thought of that but it kind of works.
Blade Runner is a story driven by the single motivation a group of Replicants all share - which is to find their creator in the hope that he can prolong their lives. This neatly mirrors Weyland's act of stowing on board the Prometheus expedition.
The crews real disregard for David's ambitions and desires - to the point where they don't even consider that he possesses such 'human' traits - actually becomes their downfall. It's David who walks the ship alone during their 2yr hypersleep. He is a voyeur of their dreams, a student of human languages, culture and knowledge. He's like a Renaissance Man in every way, except for the fact he isn't human. And it's this last fact which blinds the crew to his capabilities.
In the same way, in Blade Runner, Deckard doesn't consider the Replicants as human, but as starts taking them out he begins to understand that if a robot looks human, and thinks and feels and acts for better or worse in every way human, and it has dreams and nightmares, desires and aspirations, then what's the difference?
So maybe in this film, the Prometheus who steals fire from the Gods is David.
Shame I hated the damn film because there's a lot of really good stuff buried deep down.

MemberOvomorphJun-13-2012 7:15 PM@riflemangreen i dont agree ...
BLADERUNNER is a story about the END ....
all the story is an excuse to arrive at the final answer everyone need:"what there is after death " , because its what the androids feared , that their "moments would be lost like tears in the rain " , but is the same question a man can ask himself ( the difference is that the android know his fate = nothing ,so try in every way to live longer )
PROMETHEUS is a story about the BEGINNING
everyone look at what we are , if we are different from robots ( and the end says yes ) , everyone took different paths , and after so much pain and experience is very common that everyone remain with his ( her in that case ) faith , becuase the journey is so long and mysterious .
