I think the opening sequence of Prometheus is the KEY to the entire film and it shot right over MOST people's heads. I think that this initial Engineer on Earth is being used/and or punished by either another Race of beings all together or more of his own kind {unlikely because they use the Derelict as their bomber which is of a completely different design and because we now know there are many many more of them because David8 tells us this at the end of the film}, therefore it is possible the Engineer's are just bad and another race is punishing/and or using them to make things right on earth. The ship hovers and does not ascend, until the Engineer does his thing and we clearly then see the strands of DNA break apart and mix in the water... don't kid yourself, this is Ridley Scott toying with us in his own element and his own best used universe...something very very significant is intended their for furher down the line folks!!!

The engineer was not being punished. He was sacrificing himself to begin life on Earth. The actor that plays him said as much in his interview and his name in the credits is sacrificial engineer. I believe the difference in the ships can be accounted for by pointing out the difference between and commercial 757 and a stealth bomber. They may have more then one type of ship.

Well, the concept of artwork we can see an old engineer. Perhaps the engineer / space jockey is just a soldier and the first a tool for the creation. Then it is possible that the engineers are just creations (labor hand) and we have not seen the real "gods" even. Do you have a link to that interview, Socrates? I thought it might be a punishment, much like your namesake drinking the Hemlock, although his IDEAS still went on to make up part of the intellectual/philosophical 'dna' of western civilistion. I wondered if the reason for the different design of ship was more than just the result of being billions of years beforehand, but perhaps because there is a different faction of Engineers who are not busy making war, and bioweapons. I also thought they had a bit of a death cult going on, judging from the temple, where the Xenomorph carving is in the same pose as one would see the crucified Jesus hanging on a cross in a church... and of course the mural. So the interview would be interesting for me.

cool, even better so he deliberately gives himself up to start this entire process and the Hovering ship is now somehow forever connected to DNA seeding of life on earth, therefore the Hovering Mother ship is part of the Same Jockey Race of beings! And Shaw is on her way to their home world to confront them! This party hasn't even started yet bro !

I agree that there are two kinds of Engineers, who are probably fighting each other. Mothership guys sacrifice themselves to make life and the Juggernaught ones destroy it. Something like that.

I will add the link in a few when I track it down again. Also, this is a second meaning behind David saying later that sometimes in order to build, you have to destroy. In my opinion anyway. I'm going to look for the link to interview. This is a different one I found from Lindelof himself. Scroll down to the second question about religious spiritual elements. http://www.heyuguys.co.uk/2012/06/07/prometheus-writer-damon-lindelof-talks-engineers-alien-family-tree-the-sequels-opening-scene/

I agree, this movie was very good. Very well done in my opinion. I could see where it could have used more backstory and character depth, but I think they did it to keep the pacing the way it was. I have seen it 3 times, and only the 2nd and 3rd time could I take time to breathe and really look at the movie and enjoy it fully. The first time I was so tense with trying to figure things out or wondering what was going to happen.

I think we may be an accident. I believe the engineer at the beginning is part of a somewhat religious, peaceful order of their race and that he wanted to help make a new race, sacrificing himself to do so. Hence his order's ship is round, non-threatening and why he's in a simple robe and not an armored suit. When the others learn of what he is done, they set out to destroy us as we may be able to evolve and kill them, in their minds. Hence, why the awakened engineer starts killing everybody as he's just completing his mission and feels he owes no answers to the enemy. I think we'll see more of the engineer culture in future films and that's what excites me!

Wasn't RS filming enough of prometheus to splice together for adding into a sequel,( basically acting like a flashback) to bring the 2nd half if It gets the go ahead...up to speed without having to start from scratch on a part 2 production...sort of filming one movie and making 2 out of them, swore I read or heard that on here a while back...In either case I saw it today in 3D and frinking LOVED IT!, so many pick it apart. its set in the future, we may view death differently , Im sure there all had to sign there waviers..(life away)..I thought the film was better then most films in the past few years, in terms of sci-fi.......NOW watch The david 8 halloween costumes fly off the shelves...;p

I read there were 17 minutes of unused footage. It will be on blu ray, but not as a directors cut but in a deleted scenes section.

You can see the exactly the same kind of surface details on the saucer, that we see on the juggernaut. The engineer at the beginning of the movie looks ripped, but his body actually appears more human than the bad-tempered fellow on the juggernaut. Even the derelict ship from "Alien" differs significantly from the juggernaut. A great deal of time has passed between that prologue and our near future. Engineer technology presumably doesn't stand still, any more than does ours. It looks to me as if the engineers have continued to develop their own physicality, along with other examples of their technology. I daresay they don't look the way they do, as a result of working out.
