Thanks for the post OregonJoe,
I'm kinda of confused by your post. This is what the movie told us, kind of blatantly to me personally. I didn't think these points were too hard to uncover. :(

Yes to your comment...they didint not make it to safety let alone theri ships...that is my take. And the guy in stasis didnt launch either, so he stayed instasis. they had a major metldown and the goo is the reason why...the stuff is a game changer, highly unstable and had to be eperimented with away from the enigneers home planet. Now, she is going there and with some sperm, can produce another enigneer eating monster

What of the chest-burst SPACE JOCKEY? My theory: since the Engineer's ship is brought down at the end of the film, and he goes to persue, and is killed, we know it's not him. However, even after the fetus is removed from Shaw, she has extreme pains, reminiscent of Exec Officer Kane (John Hurt) in the original ALIEN, right before the chest bursting scene. We know Shaw and David take another Engineer ship to attempt going to the home planet.
So, what if, Shaw is piloting the ship, encased in the Engineer's Space Jockey suit, the xenomorph bursts out, the ship crashes, becoming the derelict, the xenomorph is female (coming from Shaw), and starts laying eggs (ALIENS), setting things in motion for the arrival, at some point in the future, for Ripley and the crew of the Nostromo.
Just a theory...

Some interesting thoughts here. As to Shaw and her abdominal pains, I think it's nothing more than the fact she had the alien fetus cut out of her and was off the operating table 30 seconds later.
It would appear the medical/health insurance industry of the future wants patients out of their care and home even faster than they do today.

Good stuff here guys, the point I was hoping to make is, can we assume the things I posted when considering tangents in the plot, back story, or future sequels. My hope is to get consistency with what we know from the film. If these points can be safely assumed then we can construct unrevealed things or potential futures.
This is why they seem so obvious, because they would be what I would call major premises to build upon. If they aren't true then they should be discarded from future conjectures. :)

Not everyone with a space suit has to be a pilot. They may be weapons specialists and wear the suits to avoid being splashed with black goo.
What is odd is why they are piled up. We could theorise that one of the others found the bodies and piled them before dying himself, or that the guy in stasis piled them up to clear the tunnel, but then why would he leave - unless he really thinks like a worker ant and only moves things when they become obstacles.
