None of you know the answers, not because the movie is clever but because its a dreadful mess. You all know your stuff and are tearing it to shreds,You are looking for some Star trek style timeline and there isn't one.Yes the scale is wrong ,schoolboy error in this catalogue of errors.Yes the Jockey was back in the hot seat in Alien, yes no Cryo chambers in the ship in Alien. Shaw sent the code in plain English but in Alien all they do get some kind of morse code,But then is this a different planet to the one in Alien? Hey who knows ? .How much cash do you want to spend to find out ? RS either knows by now he has boobed big time or is conning us into a sequel .Either way we have been had.

Yeah...eerr... I just don't like the idea of the Xenomorph being natural. Every one of it's characteristics points towards it being a bioweapon. Although, on the other hand... It would be more epic if it were natural, and had it's own home planet. But then again, there's not much you can do there. So it's a epic VS depth/detail/interesting factor tradeoff.

Not sure if already posted, or side tracking the thread, but did anyone notice the space jockey in Alien was much much larger than the one in Prometheus? If you look at this picture - http://horrorfanzine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/alien-04.jpg The scale of the humans compared to the space jockey, the space jockeys head is almost the size of the human :|

Hmmm... would they just let it go, rather than have huge Space Jockeys towering over Shaw, or is he special? Is he an atoning priest... an actual Engineer rather than one of the cloned worker drones.

Regarding the size of the Space Jockey, well some of this is down to mistakes made by Ridley Scott in the way he shot the movies. As he used child actors to play the crew when they walked up to the Chair, this made the Space Jockey look massive, like 12-15ft. You do see the real life scale in this image. Whats nice about this image is you can see its the un finished prop and can make out from this that the Space Jockey does not look like a Skelton like it did in Alien but more like a Space Suit. Ridley used child actors walking upto the Chair to give us a illusion and a sence of bigger scale... The size of that Jockey above compared to the production staff working on it, is the same scale of the ones that are hanging on the walls in Prometheus and the Dead one on the floor.... In Prometheus Ridley makes another error with Scale, when he uses Small Shaw with the Engineers actor in a fight scene, again to create a illusion. But in doing so we see this Engineer compared to the door that leads to the lifeboat and then can see he is not as big as the suposed 9ft scale they wanted to have them as... So yes through out both movies there are some inconsistancies in scale... But it does not distract much from the movie, and we can still over all get the indication that the Engineers are 8-9ft tall.

As far as that article well regarding the end of the movie it did leave the door open for 3 out comes... 1) Follow Shaw and David and find out where they go, what they find and who they meet.... 2) Follow events on LV 223, maybe Earth sends out another mission and they come across whats left behind including the potential Proto Xeno.... 3) Go back into the distant past, and maybe not set entirely on Lv 223 but the Engineers home world, where we can find out more about them and maybe what really went so wrong for them around 2000 years ago.... I think Ridley could do a number 1 that would tie in with number 3, via flash back scenes and at the end could lead to another movie that ties from end of Prometheus 2 with 1/3 covered that then explores 2... Which i think would allow a Prometheus 3 to see the Engineers that Shaw finds, head down to LV 223 to have a look at what went down, maybe destroy the out post but then on way home they pick up a unwelcome passenger.... that then finally leads us to Alien.

This to me is 50% right and 50% wrong....engineers already have a looonggg history....with the xenon and its life cycle....also the dead engineers piled up against the door have holes busting out of their chests and head....(where the offspring went who knows) but its all a very similar life cycle....firstly davids container is a different, smaller type of container with what seems to be a different type of 'goo' stored in a different way and finally why would the engineers want to impregnate humans (billions of us) with an organism to destroy us that they can't completely control themselves (not saying they weren't going to destroy us but in that way?) , that seem to have killed the piled up engineers and indeed does kill the engineer at the end of the movie and shows up in 'ALIEN' with yet another chest busted space jockey/engineer....bunch of dumbasses huh?...there's a lot more than that wrong here!

@ nickell: i was considering the possibility that the engineers weren't trying to "destroy" earth, but actually repopulate it with xenos. they apparently engineered a technology which (essentially) converts humans to xenos. why not test it out on a mass of humans which they created to begin with?

I noticed ridley tried to cram a lot of cobbs original designs for Alien and jodorowskis dune into prometheus, even the huge monster reminds me of cobbs original design before giger came on board. I noticed the belly of the ship lowered like thunderbirds two in a nod to Martin Bower who built the original nostromo ship.

@aliceayers...Firstly i'll say it again...i didn't say destroy earth...i said destroy "US" 2ndly........to what end?....why create billions of xenos that they themselves can't fully control...given the proof in prometheus and alien....again why populate earth with xenos?...they can't even transport eggs or goo...without getting themselves killed....what chance have the got creating billions of them on earth.....sorry waaay off for me.....

All life on Earth from single-celled to modern humans shares a common ancestral DNA. If the engineers seeded life on earth as in the panspermia theory, they would have done so approximately 4 billion years ago. This means the opening scene with the Dr. Manhattan/Voldemort-looking alien took place 2-4.5 billion years in the past in order for his DNA to have seeded all life on Earth. Fast forward to when the engineers all died or went into stasis a mere 2,000 years ago. Why does their species appear EXACTLY THE SAME? They haven't evolved at all, while humans meanwhile have evolved from simple life forms into mammals, higher mammals, apes, primitive humans, modern humans and now have advanced technology and are capable of space travel. Meanwhile, the "engineers" haven't aged a day and their technology is roughly the same as it was thousands, millions, or billions of years ago. Also, when Dr. Shaw analyzes the DNA of the dead engineer, the computer says the DNA is a "match." If the engineers only visited Earth much more recently (tens of thousands of years ago in the cave paintings) and created humanity with DNA identical to their own, then modern humans would look identical to the Dr. Manhattan/Voldemort aliens. If the DNA matched completely, humans would HAVE TO look just like the aliens. No way around it.

The're a lot a theories floating around and this article is at least comprehensible compared to the biblical and mythological interpretations. I don't consider Prometheus as a religious/mythical adaption, because the movie emphasizes an atheist point of view. Hence the Nietschze quote on that 'whats110212' or something website. Most people miss the meaning of that black stuff, wich plays a key roll. It is in fact a substance that gives any organisme an 'evolution boost'. Those white snakes were actually just worms before they came in contact with the stuff. That enhanced their survival capabilities, and are not just simple monsters. Therefore, i think Engineers are us + black stuff (Nietsches ubermensch!). A combination made thousand of years ago. The only pitfall is that it disables independent reproduction. All the engineers are men, Aliens need a host etc. The theme of reproduction is at the heart of the Alien series. Engineers needed us to reproduce wich motivated them to create worlds and humans. But, this means we as humans discovered the black stuff. However, their reproduction process had a catastrophic epidemic mishap --> the Aliens that wiped out all the engineers. A mishap due to our intervention. E. Shaw did not give birth, she wasn't even pregnant (David says so), it has nothing to do with religion (in terms of conception). The squid = spermcel + blackstuff. --> creates facehugger. Aliens are no engineer pets, or biomass weapons. Couldn't you see the engineers running like little bitches!? Wouldn't you be pissed of at an inferior race that you need to sustain yourself and wich causes above all an epidemic flood of ALiens? "there is nothing" ....but reproduction and the power to reproduce wich captivates the true meaning of life. Thus my interpretation of the movie. I like this view a lot better, but it doesn;t solve everything

@nickell: apologies for misunderstanding. for me, the main point of Prometheus is highlighting the idea of Existential nihilism: that there is no reason for creation. david was created because we could create him we were created because the engineers could create us why would the Engineers want to test creating a colony/planet of xenos? why not, if they could? i know this type of "anti-meaning" doesn't sit well with a lot of film goers, but i really liked the way it was done in Prometheus.

Revelation  12:7   A war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fought against the Dragon. The Dragon and his angels fought back but he was defeated. And there was no place left for them in heaven... Revelation 12:13 And when the Dragon found he was cast to the earth he pursued the woman who gave birth to the man child... Revelation 12:17  Then the Dragon became furious with the woman and went to make war with the remnant of her seed.... Look closely at the Xeno mural in the temple. Notice the wings.   In Alien 3 the Xeno is referred to as the Dragon. Could this be the answer to Shaws question "why do you hate us, why do you want to kill us?" Are the  original Xenos fallen Angels still jealous and furious at their Creators beloved creation man. Is this why they were sending a deadly cargo to earth 2000 years ago?Are the engineers worshipers of the beast, doing the will of their God?

David -jealous of man- ( man -superior creation ,though flawed) David wants to kill parents. Lucifer- jealous of man-wants to kill creator ( the Christ) Look closely at temple mural. Original Xeno worshipped by engineer has wings.(fallen angel) Xeno-jealous of man ( try's to send deadly cargo 2000 years ago) -try to wipeout bloodline that would bring forth the Christ.

Its about time what i dont understand is the ship rising while he has his final drink you see the ship witch looked like the program V ship leaving the planet where they fooled by another species in drinking from the cup witched i noticed had the tree of life on the lid like drink this and you become gods thats my first question? 2 question i was hoping to see the space jockey crawl into his seat and see the alien come out of his chest like the way dallas lambert n kane find him what happen maybe keep it real like the movie the thing they practicly welded both movies together and it was great but anyway ive seen alien like close to a thousand times all my questions where answered other than the 2 i mentioned

Well I must say here that there is no evidence that the Engineers want to do anything to us or the Earth. Their plan, whatever it was, years before as captured by there ships system and replayed by David show that obviously one or all of the crew were contaminated and chased and ultimately killed via bursting by some form of proto Xeno. The one surviving Engineer was possibly brought out of hypo sleep too quickly and panicked (wouldn’t you) and then tried to escape. The ships navigation system seems to have been set to travel to Earth; however David could have done this while fiddling with the systems. Remember Ash tried to bring the organism back by stealth in A1 and possibly even Bishop in A's. I reckon Ridley has something else up his sleave and we are all along for the ride. I loved the film, but gotta say hated the xeno creature design. Whoever earlier said that Cobb's designs were used is correct and yet again it looks like the father of the Alien was simply not used. Giger is the only artist who can do Xeno justice in my book. The creatures looked like characters from Ben10! Hated the Vagina Squid the most....

The Aliens in the original had a very complex but very predictable lifecycle. They also had what appeared to be a complex social system (matriarchy) and a complex communication system that suggested high level intelligence (lets kill one of us so our blood can eat a hole in the floor and we can escape), (Don't kill my babies and I'll let you take your baby and live) etc etc. None, Zero, Zilch of this can be explained by a little bit of evolutionary booster dust + a worm or + an octopus etc etc. Its just really poor story writing. That sort of thing necessarily has to be learned over time in response to evolutionary processes (hunting and survival) or less likely programmed by an intelligence. Of course had the creatures that escaped from the corpses somehow survived (maybe gotten onto another ship and gone off to another planet or found a food source to prey on) they may have learned the behaviour. Or alternatively the aliens dna may have been harvested from an original creature. One theory I was thinking about today was perhaps the dust contains dna from worlds visited by the space jockeys and they use the containers to store copies of creatures from the worlds they visit, like dna zoo's. And the ships are seedships rather then WMD. The WMD idea is kindof lame, given that humans and life in general could easily be wiped out with a simple time deactivated virus much more efficiently than a bunch of octopi.

@ALICEAYERS...i take your point alice i do....but surely this notion that you and many others have entertained...makes even the existence of the engineers an exercise in futility....just go around creating things for no reason and to no end...without fruition of a point...they must be really bored?...we just do it because we can...there's nothing else to do....Theres got to be a reason...as why would they care then to destroy or even get angry at us?....ive ran out of canvas oh i'll just paint over that old one...only again amplifies the exercise of a futile nature....seems and awful lot of trouble to go to...to end up dead themselves of which the body count of space jockeys between prometheus and Alien is well into double figures...collateral damage you may say...but for no reason?...according to your point.

@Nickell Also its unlikely the answer given by a drunk cynical crew member "because we could" is anywhere near accurate given the task David was assigned prior to the crew coming out of stasis and the obvious value in being able to create synthetic humans. Why do we spend so much money on artificial intelligence research and robotics, its not "because we can".

@ZYGOTE...yeah man....and as i've said earlier....the engineers are already killed by these beings on quite a few occasions....so they can't completely control them especially in a breakout accidentally or otherwise....so why use them to wipeout humanity and create BILLIONS of them on earth...just because they can?..to what end?..they can't even handle a 'FEW' ahem! as it where...naaahhhh!

@zygote, well, it can be explained by the black stuff (we really need a name for that btw) since we are talking about a movie and not real life. Who is to say that organic extra-terrestrial substance is not capable of making an organisme reach it's full potential based on it's physical structure at that specific moment. Thus evolution based on the physical purely and not on the enviromental - physical relation wich indeed takes years to develop. With humans, it creates the ubermensch in physical strenght and especially intelligence because of our superior neurology compared to animals. Aliens come from us (spermcel --> facehugger) thus are provided instantly with similair intelligence. We reproduce ourselves, robots etc. because we indeed can (but not Holloway, that scene is very important!) but also because we must in order to sustain our species. A privilege others (Engineers, Aliens) need a third party for... This also a very nihilistic point of view, but at least it has motivation.

@ELLEN nice comment....but its seems you've described a symbiotic version of the goo (Black Stuff) here.. quote..."Who is to say that organic extra-terrestrial substance is not capable of making an organisme rich it's full potential based on it's physical structure"....which is not the case with this goo....apologies if i've taken it up wrong...and it is a great point if its true....but theres no evidence in the film thus far. and really we wouldn't need the 'XENO' lifecycle if this was the case. I've put it out there before...that one of the great flaws with the film is 'Davids' motivation for contaminating HOLLOWAY...just really because it doesn't go any where in terms of absolute answers for david interns of holloways reaction..and 'Potential'...we know he impregnates SHAW but that is a by product...but more clearly (to me and i could be wrong) but it's the 3rd different reaction we see to the black goo.... i believe in its essence the black goo is a core (obviously powerful) neutral substance that can be manipulated to suit the needs of the engineers based on their creative or destructive motives....we see the engineer at the start breaking down yet ABSOLUTELY creating at thee nucleus of life....Fyfield absolutely Mutating....And HOLLOWAY...??? well he was both breaking down and mutating ...but spawned life....though NOT human...can this be a co-incindence?...and really HOLLOWAYS goo...seemed to be stored in a different way in glass viles floating in a clear 'gel' or water like substance....so the random nature idea you've implemented just to me seems too random given the un known and indeed random nature that the events WOULD have occurred as opposed to the factual events of the film that DID occur.

Hey Nickell, thanks for your thoughts on the matter. I've derivided my implications on events that did occur but on a primarily visual level. My evolution theorie stems from a couple of scenes: - The normal worms you see (when they come in the chamber) before they are turned in to 'white superior beings' - The overal whiteness, strength, classical look of the Engineers -The spermcel that solemnly wants to impregnate, turns into a squid that needs another to produce it's offspring (spermcel needs egg from uterus) - Black Goo responds heavenly to co2 (our breath including that of the engineers), therefore not so neutral and very dangerous. But that's a side note. So, the reason for David to give the black goo to Holloway is to see if he will be turned into a god. Because David's motivation: Seeking eternal life for Weyland, besides his freakishly curiosities. "big things have small beginnings"... Indeed the black goo has a lifecreating element as well as a desctructive one. But the destructive element is un-controllable imo. Xeno's are an unwanted and uncontrollable epidemic... Although my theory is indeed far from conclusive, i don't consider it random by any means.

@ELLEN Ahhh now i see fully where your coming from from ...i did read your post a couple of times...so made sure i understood it as much as i did...but obviously coming from my own point of view...sorry i thought you'd meant the goos structure...you meant the worms yeah? being affected but the goo?...therefore mutation in the same ways as fyfields? i think thats a great notion and bunch of intelligent ideas having now read your first post in coherence with your second....the only thing i'd be a bit iffy on just looking through your point of view and not my own...is that the "try harder" motivation of david...doesn't assume to turn anything into a God...as its based on nothing and therefore doesn't explain HOLOWAYS mutation or destruction or his own creative aspect in regards SHAW...at the hands of the same goo that mutated so obviously fyfield who didn't look like he was about to make love to anything...and indeed holloway does get up the following morning same time span as fyfiled give or take...there fore gives a notion of contradiction and randomness to the absorption of this goo...if its the same stuff. apart from that loved your post...

True, Davids motivation appears to be lacking, but let's see this through Davids eyes instead of our own. What is he besides a synthetic? To me he is being portrayed as an overly curious computer that is obsessed with existential questions (given his own nature). But more important, he is a synthetic that 'feeds' on information. This becomes noticeable during the first part of the movie when everbody still sleeps. Sometimes knowledge can be aquired by 'accident' or experiment. David's ethical stance to use humans as experiments should not be an issue as he is constantly denounced as non-human and therefore will not/can not comply to our understanding of good and right. David has an own agenda of 'information satisfaction' that is secondary to Weylands command wich motivates his hasty actions. Thanks for the compliment btw!

I agree with Aliceayers, that's what I was thinking too. The Engineers basically created a watered down version of themselves (the sacrificial guy in the begining of the movie), and dropped him off on Earth to populate it with hominids eventually, which could then be used to breed xenos. So there's probably a big galactic war going on somewhere that they just need a shit load of xenos to take out the rebel alliance or something like that. And what Prehnility was saying, it would be cool if there was a Xeno home planet. Or if the black goo was an extract from the xeno planet that the Engineers discovered could be used as a evolution accelerant. Thus causing such the rapid growth and life cycle of a xeno in such a short time. Also explaining how the trilobite went from a baby squid to an adult squid in just a few hours.

Hi, new here. Anyway, after reading all the posts so far, i feel i need to play devils advocate a little and mention that the idea that humans may have been created specifically to evolve to the point of where we are in the movie solely for the purpose of being hosts for Xenos. Obviously we dont know the context of the mural in the goo room and whether the Engineers revear or fear the Xenos but they clearly have a connection. If the engineers were seeking to create the perfect organism, humans certainly arent the endgame. As proof i refer to Ash and Bishop both referring to the aliens as "perfect" and "beautiful" organisms. Also, one other thing to add as far as the mural/relief carving of the xeno. (also i apologize in advance if this point has been discussed elsewhere). but what if the Xenos are "God" and the engineers are just working for them to spread their seed throughout the galaxy/universe?

I kind of don't want to get too scientific because it is just a movie, and also fiction... However, You can have the exact same DNA and still look completely different because not all genes are expressed. We have many unexpressed genes. Also, Just using DNA would be a huge coincidence. Life could use XYZ for that matter. Using DNA is possibly unique to earth. We will not know until we find life on another planet. Spielberg had it correct in ET when the scientist were trying to save ET and they said "He's got DNA!" That excitement would be because either it means that all or most life as we know it uses DNA or that we are related. If we find life on Mars, Europa or anywhere else in our solar system and it uses DNA it would lend credence to the Panspermia theory. In Prometheus we must assume that the engineers created all life using DNA. It would also be safe to assume that the black ooze manipulates any engineer created life forms. So the engineers created it to use against their own creations and not other life forms??? I would also assume that the engineers created the Xeno since it seems to be able to impregnate DNA based life forms (Human, Engineer, Dog, Oxen (Depending on which A3 you watch)). Maybe I am over thinking all of this...
