DEBATE: Is Prometheus A Sci-Fi Classic Or Not?

2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Brazil, and Alien were all ground-breaking films that did things never before seen on film. If Alien and Aliens were never made then perhaps Prometheus might become a classic. As it stands now, it doesn't really do anything that we have not seen before. The special effects are not mind-blowing by modern day standards (in the sense that we can't believe such special effects are even possible like many of the classics listed previously when they first debut) . The squid/baby extraction would be a true iconic horror moment if we had never had the chestburster scene in the original Alien (as of right now many of the shocking moments in Prometheus feel like watered down elements we saw in Alien & Aliens). There is too much fan service and audience pandering for this to ever be regarded as a true classic. This has about as much chance of becoming a classic as The Phantom Menace.

NO! all this discussion is inspired to make people believe it is a great movie, which it isn't! if it becomes a classic, it'll be the same lot of people that allowed movies like Episode 1 to be deemed a classic as well!!!

First, this topic and article are discussed a little further down on the front page still...so don't be surprised if this gets locked. Second, I think Prometheus will be a classic.

I think it will be hailed a classic, but not yet. I'd assume it would happen about 2 minutes after Ridley Scott dies. lol

If sequel(s) are done and all by Scott it will become a classic almost over nite. I agree with @ Syphonox that the fanboys need to move on and hope they can get a Alien movie made to fill their xeno void.

Well, as there are many discussions bout the movie, its not somethink like "battleship", which you may see and 2 minutes later you forget about it. So maybe, but i am not sure if it will be in one line in 20 years with Alien, Bladerunner, Matrix, Terminator2 or Predator.

I, and many on here, have seen the movie multiple times. Last time I did that was Star Wars 1977. Nuff said...

come on - i NEVER understood AT ALL why people like STAR WARS. This was childish disney-like fantasy and is not sci-fi IMO. I would never compare a "good" sci-fi movie with any episode of the star wars universe... these episodes simply dont count - they even dont exist in MY world. Hate this Lucas crap.. Yes it will because the story line is good and people who saw it will tell their children about it 20 years from now. the quality is there the basic stuf that made alien good is present here.

It will be regarded as a cult movie! Ridley only makes great genre films. ALIEN, Blade Runner, Legend...Prometheus...all GREAT!!!

Alien Ressurection, classic masterpiece. Sure the cgi aliens look crap but the characters are more memorable then the mannequins in Prometheus, except David.

Seriously "Prometheus" a classic? A classic what? If "Prometheus" is a classic then "Aliens" must be "Citizen Kane".

whats classic about it?....its been done before...many times to death....lack of originality even with a new topic based in thousands of years of culture.... chestbusters substitued for like for like shocks....yaaawwwwnn..nothing groundbreaking, new, or classic..... poooorrr attempt at re-invention with a new notion.
