Stank a dank dank

I was hoping to walk out of there feeling as I did after seeing the new star trek or inception best movies I've seen in roughly 25 yrs. but felt like I had been mugged and left for dead. I found myself falling asleep halfway though. If they make a sequel I will wait for it on cable tv.

I felt like that after first watching it, but I went back and loved it.
It's a shock. Alien and Aliens are great horror and horror action sci-fi, whose plots are not confusing or contradictory. They make sense, and are character driven.
This film is NOT character driven. And it's confusing at times. There's hundreds of little crptic clues.
It works on three layers, - surface narrative, 16 humans and 1 android go to LV 223
Then lurking beneath those we have a layer of philosophy being sent up for discussion,
And finally the mythology.
I was so pissed off after watching it, I came to this site to moan about it. Then I started thinking about it. And the penny dropped. i will definitely see this film again. And the sequels.

Same, I was in a rage for a good 2 days. Then, I and calmed down and went to see it again and calmed down further. No it is not a masterpeice but it is a fun movie when you get over it's weaker points.

@Skinner: sadly...i have to agree with you in regards to how you
felt when you left the theater. i walked all the way home wondering
how i could have put so much faith into a film like i had with this one
i do not hate the film, just feel really let down
i plan to see it a second time, this time around in IMAX.
i don't think my overall opinion of this film will change
but the visuals are too cool to not give them a thorough 2nd viewing

@Hadley's Hope I am going next week for the 3D and review it again. I was upset at it, but understood it. The thing is this is not TV, we do not have countless episodes to drill through all the concepts/ideas and plots twists nor is this a book. That is why I was unset. Playing cutie with the script and not getting down to work and telling the story was a fatal flaw. Alien 3 suffered from that to, in a lesser degree. I will go and see it and grow to except it, but not love it...

I've seen it in all 3 formats now. After the gorgeousness of the IMAX 3D, a calmer 2D viewing is a real plus. My buddy and I were truly 'zoning out' at the scenery of the IMAX version and missed bits.
I'd heartily recommend a second viewing in 2D.

Im with Hadley's Hope and Svanya. Big Shock and disappointment on my first viewing, then got over it a day or two after.
I like the film quite a lot now. 7/10

Agree with you Skinner. I don't hate the film but was disappointed. I am going to see it again in the hopes that it will be better the second time around, but I seriously doubt it.

You loved that dog turd Inception but hated this? Well, that tells me you have no problem with bad writers telegraphing every stinking punch. What in the world did you dislike about this movie, apart from it cutting into your beer money? Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of Prometheus...but then, I wouldn't wander about championing that sorry Master's class in how to invade the action/adventure-based dreams of oil titans either.
What kind of beer did you want to get?

Inception was a well written film in that what you did not understand arose from complexity that you could make sense of in subsequent viewings. This is impossible for Prometheus as the questions come from the fact that there is a huge empty space in the story where the complexity should be. The answers are not in the film, sure you can speculate till you are blue in the face but the fact remains that the explanations are not actually in the movie. I liken this to a million dollar painting with a white canvas and a black dot in the center, you can talk with your friends about all the things it could represent but at the end of the day it is still just mostly empty space.

Agreed @ Drakeequation, or worse a blank white canvas with constantly shifting ink blot patterns like your avatar. You shape-shifted but I love it. Take care.

wow some of these posters remind me of a friend that dates an awful woman. "what the heck does he see in her?" lol
some of you guys got suckered.
This movie is at best, an entry on mystery science theater 3000 lol

Inception is a masterpiece. FACT.
As for Prometheus...I've seen the film three times...and still feel the same way I did at first. Maybe to a lesser degree (i've calmed down!) but my issues with it are still there.
My friend (who has now seen it twice) really cheered up the second time. But i can't help but feel this was because he had lowered his standards drastically since his shock emergence from the cinema after his first viewing (he literally didn't understand what had happened).
Also...is there anyone here who liked Sunshine? I adore that film and no one seems to mention it in the sci-fi canon?!
June 13, 2012
I thought Sunshine was wonderful. Danny Boyle referenced Alien and 2001: A Space Odyssey as inspiration for his screen adaption which leads me to reflect what type of movie Danny Boyle would have fabricated if he had the helm of Prometheus ? Take care.
June 15, 2012
@Sundar
Yeah, I remember in the DVD commentary Danny Boyle said that he'd pinched an idea from Ridley Scott's 'Alien': having lots of little toys and stuff scattered around that would move even though the scenery didn't, thus maintaing the illusion of ship movement.
Really smart.

Sunshine, Supernova, Event Horizon, and of course 2001. Yes. It's going to be another 3-4 years before I get another film in this genre because they are so expensive and risky. I still want the real Event Horizon with the lost scenes. I would like a true sequel to star-gate with the original cast as well.
I got exactly what I expected from this movie. A visually stunning B++ movie that I will be watching more times in the next few years while I wait for something of its scope and budget to get bid on again.
On my first viewing, I'm upset that the canisters magically produced so many wildly different genetic effects. I question where the worms/snakes came from. Are they boot microbes affected by the goo? What happened to the boyfriend? I think he should have turned into the original genotype for the engineers if he was headed in that direction and possibly survived a flame burst. Why is his genotype moving in the direction of the engineers, then his offspring makes the alien?
One 'sacrificial' engineer in no way interfaces prehistoric human genetics, then spawns humans. Do these guys really have any idea what they are doing with the genome? Why are we a 'perfect' match with no interface.
Sunshine was beautiful and emotive. This movie bounced around too much for me to connect to either cerebrally or emotionally. I can say that once the action started it did not stop and I did like the character of Weylon as a man seeking immortality rather than a corporation seeking a new weapon.
I kind of want to see a sequel, I will give it a plus for the randomness promoting believability of character development.
