2000 years ago time of Christ?

Is it just me or has anyone else pondered the fact that the engineers tried to come back to earth 2000 years ago. This would be at the time of Christ and start of Christianity which ties into the whole believer part of the plot. Does anyone think that this will tie into sequel and its meant to correlate with the story?
