MemberOvomorphJun-16-2012 5:37 AMThe suits on the engineers seem to merge with their bodies, seamlessly. Not like a worn suit but an extension of their physical self.
Is there more to this element than we realise?

AdminPraetorianJun-16-2012 5:55 AMYeah, it did seem to be a part of the engineers body. Perhaps grown on him.
I remember something from the Blade Runner movie, about Roy Batty and some body tattoos on him that were visible in one scene but scrapped as an idea. It was supposed to be the way some kind of futuristic body armor was attached to his body (Batty was a combat model). Maybe Ridley re-visited that idea for Prometheus.

MemberOvomorphJun-16-2012 6:01 AMI think you are right. I mean, isn't that part of the point of biotech? Or is it just to be able to 'grow' parts?

MemberDeaconJun-16-2012 6:04 AMWell i put my two cents on this a while ago....
You can go out and buy say a fur coat and wear it say like this...

Or just as if you wear snake skin coat....

We wear them as coats... but imagine if when we put them on they actually attach to us and become part of our body and fuse with us...
Thus it would be a part of our body just as a Gorillas Fur is and just as a Snakes Skin is...
And the Space Jockey Suit is simular its also Bio Mech, that fuses with its wearer and thus when its wearer has died it becomes dead so the Space Jockey in Alien is the dead exo suit and thus more like this...

MemberDeaconJun-16-2012 6:27 AMSo we have to assume that the Engineer under suit is mearly like his long jons lol...
So we have to assume if he wanted to he could some how take that suit off and be just like the Sacrefice Engineer.
Here is how i see the Engineer...

MemberOvomorphJun-16-2012 7:07 AMNo offence to anyone, but I believe you're all over thinking it.
In my opinion Engineers are just like people, they have bones, flesh, skin. The Engineer in the opening scene wears only a small cloth, while yes the others wear fancy suits. In my opinion the suits they wear are the clothes of their race, As they are all identical. From memory when they first see the hologram of them running (when one gets decapitated by a door (lol, fail)) they all are wearing the same suits as the space jockey in the final scenes, and even wear the helmets. Since the 'lab' has breathable air, it could be understood that the suits are to protect (to some degree) from the weapons they are making, like they were the hazmat suits of the Engineers. Just my opinion.

The reason why I think this one deserves a thought is that at the ending of the movie we clearly see how organic that biomech armor is. It reminded me of fish-skin or the hard parts of a squid's body. I mean when the xeno bursted out the armor didn't really break, it tore.
That said, I don't think that was the same armor like the ones we saw on the dead engineers and on the armor-stands in the hallway. I mean look at it, the design is different, it's more like jelly/mesh, it's not like an exoskelleton. It's not AS big as the armor on the armor stands. It looks more like something they'd wear under that real, bone-armor, so they aren't completely naked.

I take the view that isn't a, "suit", at all - it is him: effectively, "nude". That is, nude: while having been either adapted, or evolved, from an alternate state of equally effective nudity that we also see, earlier in the film.
[Where the fact that the adaption or evolution takes place in that direction is taken as given, for argument's sake].
I take the view that, if there is a, "suit", at all, in this film, it's the Flight Enclosure.
I also take the view that, for an adult audience, the case is quite strong that it's a little unnecessary to post a picture of a fur coat in order to illustrate the phrase, "fur coat" - or a picture of a snake coat to illustrate the phrase, "skin coat"?
I may be mistaken in this.
However, I feel compelled to assist any who are unfamiliar with coats to this degree. Those that are, may well like to investigate the concepts - and some very important particulars of usage - surrounding coats, a little further:

MemberOvomorphJun-17-2012 5:43 AMWhat if its not a suit and the engineer got some black goo on him, let says his foot, during the "outbreak" and put himself into stasis. During the 2000 years in stasis he was slowly "changing" into his current form. Might also explain his aggressiveness.

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 5:09 AMYeah i believe he was infected a little bit, but the 2000 years asleep slowed it down.
I like the idea that their suits are descended from a xeno, that couldn've made him angry .
Maybe a xeno is like some new thing they've made, and they want to resource every bit of them.

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 5:33 AMIt looks to me like it is all bio and no mechanics at all. A combo if xeno and Engineer is a good thought.
If he is a xeno Engineer or a Engineer xeno?
In any case he looks like a one way ticket in his life leading to some sort of Sacrifice.
With no kids shown, no females, in fact virtually no differeences in the Engineers we have seen on this moon it is more like the Last Engineer knows he is going to self destruct at some point and has been bred or created for this funtion.
If his mission is to destroy Earth it is just what he was designed to do. Now that he is awake why not throw a head around and fire up the Juggernaut.

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 8:30 AMThis type of Engineer may have been bio-engineered himself so that he is specifically adapted to space-flight: the holes by his "rib cage" accommodate hoses that are plumbed into his body whilst in his cryo-chamber.
Either that, or he has a super-clever suit that can meld with his body. Both scenarios are possible.
The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile but that it is indifferent

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 9:57 AMI also noticed around his neck he has weird fish gland things, maybe the suit is a new age spacesuit, hence why they can breathe anywhere without mask/helmet.
Also, the ribcage doesnt fully connect or close up. Prep suit for facehugger + chestburster??

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 10:27 AM I also notice the 'gills' and seemed out of place. Your thoughts of all purpose survivial suit in going in the right direction. Perfect if he needs to go over the waterfalls or survive a deep water excursion without additional weight and be less cumbersome.

@Indy John; Biomech doesn't mean he is a Xeno.. It is a term for something that is part organic and part mechanic. Giger refers to the original ship (Derelict) as being Biomechanical as well.

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 11:27 AMI am thinking that the Engineer's exterior looked to me not maufactured or made to be added to the body but could have been generated through a xeno influence.
Because the remains of the beheaded Engineer shows many parts of his body still intact. I took it that the remains, if they were not bones, were an exto skeloton that might be of xeno origin.
If they were made for the Engineer and attached to his body for a serious purpose then he was indeed a Biomech,
I sort of wish Ford/Shaw/Holloway/David would have salvaged not just the head bit a part of the Engineer remains of the rest of the body just to find out it's composition.

AdminPraetorianDec-06-2012 1:22 PM@Indy John; Thing is, the term Biomechanical means a mixture of the organic and mechanical. Fused in a way that is unique, almost grown together. It is based on art, which if you are familiar with the artist you can grasp the context better.
Do you know the work of H.R Giger? He is the artist the term mostly came from, he designed everything you see here including the original Alien, the Derelict ship and the Space Jockey/Engineer. Basically the movie Alien and all subsequent movies and the movie "Species" (which my avatar is taken from) is based on Giger's art, taken from his book "Necronomicon". Here let me show you.

MemberOvomorphDec-06-2012 1:45 PMThanks for the links. I have seen the name of H.R Giger but had not sought out his work.
You can see the connection betweem humans.animals, machined parts and just fantasy elements in the various illustrations.
Certainly the images of our movie(and Alien) are evident.
Will the stlying be used in P2? That will be a vary curious. How many more xeno/ Giger related creature will actually be displayed as a story element.

AdminPraetorianDec-06-2012 1:49 PM@Indy John; Visually speaking yes, as it was all based on Giger's artwork and is crucial to the lore. He and his work is credited on Prometheus and he was present at the premiere. To understand the movie you have to understand or at least know his art. :)

MemberOvomorphJan-21-2013 2:13 PMOn a recent viewing I was looking at how the Engineers enters and gets hooked up to the pilot seat. It is beautifully displayed as the helmet comes over his head and attachments come around his arms and rib cage. Very smooth and detailed.
Now compare this to when the Last Engineer makes up and starts to exit the pod.
It looks clumsy. The hoses just sort of pop off and go dangling anywhere.. Heck it looks like something I would design. Not a smooth detachmant, not something that would have been done many times. Can you imagine trying to getting hooked up again in this pod? To me it looks like a nightmare.
So I would say it is just a single use cryo pod..meant to keep the Engineer alive until woken up for a call to arms.
Then he is on his own and needs to fight for his life..

maybe the pipes zip back into the chamber like seat belts do
maybe getting in requires assistance hence one pilot several chambers the other crew may have varied roles as with the human crew

MemberOvomorphJan-23-2013 11:23 AM"..maybe getting in requires assistance .."
This might give insight to why the Last engineer goes crazy on the crew.
At some point in the Weyland meeting the Engineer realized that there were no other Engineers around. He couldn't get hooked up even if he wanted to.
No problem, just go to Earth and put a beat down on Earthlings.
