Giger is all about Bio mechanical. When I first saw the Derelect craft in Alien the design blew me away, because it made no sense aerodynamic wise. I was wondering "wow, why have a spaceship designed with a hammer?"
Enter two main alien creatures featured in Prometheus, the Hammerpede and the Deacon.
Maybe even the ship represents life cycles.

Now I am wondering if the ship with it's female genatalia openings like the original egg design in Giger concept art and these familiar looking appendages have anything to do with the original way the ship was grown, or organic. Maybe the Engineeers craft even symbolize what it produces, as in all the murals, giant heads, and skull on top of the Temple-laboratory.
The photo is in talk prometheus to the left of everything alien above our post.

i thought there were elements of both creatures in each arm of the ship. its a design thing :)

Oh, come on, people.
Just below the P R O M E T H E U S banner on every page of this site, there's a background image in the TALK PROMETHEUS box - this is quite a good find ~phd.

Great find!
SO obvious once you see it. Of course one of the ends of the original 'derelict' was designed with the dome head of the alien...but in this version of the ship it does look more like the deacon...much sharper. I hadnt noticed the 'hammerpede' at the other end but there it is. Wonderful.

OK, maybe I'm Roarsching, but anythings possible. Maybe it's abstract Engineer architechture, pareidolia, semiotic, Christ in a Pretzel...Elephants in clouds, or a ruse to send The Lone Gunwoman(TM) on a hopeless quest, but as Manfred Mann said "Mamma allways told me not to look into the eye's of the sun, but momma, that's where the fun is, as sang in Blinded by the light.
  The photo made me think.

wow that is very cool!
what if the derelict ship formed in a circle is supposed to represent the cycle of life? since it looks like the hammerpede and the deacon maybe it is referencing the alien goo life cycle...also it is rolling in a circular motion at the end. Is that reading too far into it? I hope that made sense

thought you guys might find this interesting
it includes a lot of snippets of Giger talking about how he designed the original derelict and why it went through some changes
