The Recordings and their significance

Just a modest proposal on the significance of the recordings. First post here. Some have speculated that the first recording activated by David was left behind by some of the engineers as a sort of warning of danger. However later David activates another recording in the command/orrey room (whatever it's called) showing the engineers operating their star map. I don't think the first message was intentionally left as a warning. My hypothesis (simple speculation): The recordings comprise visual representations of the last event to have occurred in that room or space. If this is true, then the activation of the star map by the engineers identifying earth likely happened immediately before, during (or I suppose possibly immediately after) the outbreak/alien attack/fleeing thru the caverns. Additional wrinkle (in the interest of pre-emptively defending my idea) - It may be that the recordings are only programmed to record the engineers' activity. Thus it would not pick up alien/whatever else activity that occurred after the disaster. So did the disease mutation outbreak trigger a few engineers running to the command room - or did the decision to go to earth start some sort of battle between them? I'll end with a question - to those who have seen the film multiple times, or only once but have a more detailed memory than I do - what are the exact details of the recording in the command room? Was it just that one engineer in that chair, or were there others in the room? Were they in a hurry - what was their demeanor? I thought this was a great scene but I can't remember much of it Feel free to attack, eviscerate, destroy this hypothesis if you have a more lucid understanding of the events that likely happened to the engineers. Just something that occurred to me

No need to attack any hypothesis of anyone here...but, to your question... In the command room, the Engineers were not in the least bit of hurry, there was one Engineer in the chair who played the flute..David was intently studying and remembering all this, this sequence of actions...other Engineers were casual in their actions, speech could be heard although indistinct and distorted...David marvelling at the display..

I was wondering about that too. They did not seem hurried at all. There were three of them i think, all gearing up for the trip to Earth. It doesn't really show what happened to the other two after the recording. The map shows Earth as the destination, and then only one cryo tube is illuminated.

First off...any recording devices of the sophistication should pick up movment. As to the other holographic, it was if I recall a total of 4 enginners each having a specifc duty. there are 4 sleep chambers too and there are also 4 space suits as well...They do ready the ship for a planned launch no doubt about it...Perhaps one of them made it to the sleep chambert and the others ran out of the room? That is far as I can get...good opst cicatirizatic

My thoughts are of a kind of "black box" in the command room. The recording of the command room showed the plan of the engineers operating it. In this recording, however, I don't understand why the center control column was never shown. Were they not planning on taking off then? With the hallway recording, the engineers were in definite danger. When the decapitated Eng was running the last thing he did was look back indicating something was chasing him. What I don't understand about this one is if the two ran in the room before him and the room was sealed ever since, where are the original two? Also, what was the other purpose of the chamber if that was somewhere these guys were taking refuge?

If the engineers are not in a hurry in the command room, it definitely makes me think that this happened before the disease outbreak. Or that recording does not comprise the last event to happen in that room, just a recording of an important event.

I think the holograms are just exposition as a function of storytelling. The holographic approach was visual and grand in scheme (memorable). I'm afraid that's all there was to it. The unsolved mystery that I want elucidated is why 3 of the sarcophagi have holes in them at the chest level which appear to have been caused from the INSIDE while the pods remained closed.

To me the other 3 Engineers seem to be doing a lot of bending down near the sarcophagus. Maybe they was getting ready to go into Cryo Sleep after setting off to Earth? Maybe the one at the controls had the task of getting into the Pilot Seat latter? Maybe he waited for the other to be in Stasis and then he did a naughty dead to them?

A interesting thing is they was called Ghost Engineers... Now a Hologram should surely not have any physical effect on you, but you can see the ones that run through David seem to be able to move his hair as if they was a passing breeze... petty much like how some describe interaction with Ghosts in real life... Ridley did pose one question as where do we come from and where we go afterwards! Just to think if Ghosts are real and you was chased by a Lion who then kills you, if your Ghost is caught in a state of say residual haunting it would only be the dead that is shown..... thus you would not see the Lion just what happened to the person before they become dead/Ghost! Maybe thats why we dont see what chased them? Then again i am sure the latter control room shows 4 Engineers if thats the case then how can it be Ghosts if one is alive in Prometheus?

They look down at the "sarcophagus" and one motions as if saying "check that one"... there seem to be holes in three of the stasis beds. Right about chest level.

It's answered HERE in the VizFX info that they are "everyday security recordings that have degraded in quality over the millennia." That was the rationale and style brief that was given to the CGI animators. Of course, they don't discuss the details of the behavioral aspects of the content, though.

Just another thought that is recordings related. This calls into account again what David's true intentions are. Were there several of those holo recording terminals and he only chose to display the ones that would help him complete his goal? If he played the next one after, the rest of the scientists would have left the temple and not pursued the decapitated engineer.

"......those holo recording terminals and he only chose to display the ones that would help him complete his goal? ...." David must have had some options but throughout the movie he chooses the right one..to accomplish his purpose...his goal..perhaps even inflate his ego! On learning about past Earth's civilizations,,we have remains..artifacts...but no recordings,of active inhabitants.. With this movies' recordings we have thyat,,and everything depicted by the Engineers should be scrutinized. There must be many more recordings that David/Shaw can learn from..and I susggest they do this as soon as possible..before landing at the Engineers' home planet..

My take is that the recordings are an interesting plot device written to funnel the viewer's attention to what would otherwise be completely unknown- Or, would take up more movie time to get around to finding. For example= After seeing the engineers running into the room, and then the last one getting his head sheared off; the expedition sees/finds his actual remains. There might have been a great deal more time spent wondering who he was, where he came from and what was going on when he got that way if the crew didn't see the hologram. David activating the control room hologram is perhaps the same plot device as the other hologram- He activates a visual recording (as he did before, then having established that he recognizes the technology and knows how to work it) instead of fooling around trying to decipher the ships logs etc...

These holograms provide an "express Line" to information that show what the writers needed to address, as well as being sort of suspenseful at the time it is viewed, and mysterious later on- like now.

"...When the decapitated Eng was running the last thing he did was look back indicating something was chasing him..." It must be something physically threatening..and that must be one heck of a threat considering the strength and ferociousness the Engineers have displayed to humans. And seeing that many Engineers were trying to get away to..makes it more liking the creatures/beings must have been numerous .. I mean 4 Engineers against one unkown threat.seems like a fair fight to me..

I ,at first, thought the recording was looking back directly at David, that can't be though..

Well, after reading the posts in this thread I'll say this: What if the engineers we see in the "flight deck" holographic video are not the engineers who were in the hyper-sleep chambers but a group of Engineers who for unknown reasons were visiting that "Pyramid"/Juggernaut? I say that for multiple reasons. The first is that the video ends on an abrupt note, as if it were interrupted. The second is that when I saw the film for the 4th time I intentionally watched only the engineers during the "flight deck star map" scene and at no point could I confirm if there actually 3 hyper-sleep chambers with holes in them. As hard as I tried to do so I still could only visually identify 2 hyper-sleep chambers with holes in them. I also could have sworn that when David initially walks into the "flight deck" that the first upright standing space suit on his right hand side had some type of decay/damage on the upper edges of the helmet. I may be wrong about that. Separately, why were those figures/suits located at that entrance to the deck? Were they just statues? And if not, then how did the suits stand upright on their own without any obvious support? Here's the thing: if it only takes a crew of 4 to operate a Juggernaut on an interstellar flight then why were there so many Engineers in the Pyramid that the crew of the Prometheus entered? And where did the Xeno chestbusters that emerged from the Engineers hyper-sleep chambers go? Were they hiding somewhere in the flight deck and then emerged to attack the Engineers that we see in the "flight deck" video? Argh! The more I watch this film the more questions I have about it!
