The Recordings and their significance

Some have speculated that the first recording activated by David was left behind by some of the engineers as a sort of warning of danger.
However later David activates another recording in the command/orrey room (whatever it's called) showing the engineers operating their star map.
I don't think the first message was intentionally left as a warning.
My hypothesis (simple speculation): The recordings comprise visual representations of the last event to have occurred in that room or space.
If this is true, then the activation of the star map by the engineers identifying earth likely happened immediately before, during (or I suppose possibly immediately after) the outbreak/alien attack/fleeing thru the caverns.
Additional wrinkle (in the interest of pre-emptively defending my idea) - It may be that the recordings are only programmed to record the engineers' activity. Thus it would not pick up alien/whatever else activity that occurred after the disaster.
So did the disease mutation outbreak trigger a few engineers running to the command room - or did the decision to go to earth start some sort of battle between them?
I'll end with a question - to those who have seen the film multiple times, or only once but have a more detailed memory than I do - what are the exact details of the recording in the command room? Was it just that one engineer in that chair, or were there others in the room? Were they in a hurry - what was their demeanor? I thought this was a great scene but I can't remember much of it
Feel free to attack, eviscerate, destroy this hypothesis if you have a more lucid understanding of the events that likely happened to the engineers. Just something that occurred to me
